THE COMPLETE GUIDE WALES RALLY GB 2017 www.walesrallygb.com www.dayinsure.com

Welcome from Welcome to the Insider s Guide to the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB, one of the biggest events on the British motor sports calendar. As a life-long rally fan, I feel incredibly lucky to have such a huge global event happening in our own backyard, and when you consider the increasing popularity of the Wales Rally GB, becoming a sponsor was an obvious decision. This is the second year that Dayinsure have been the title sponsors of the event, which promises to be the most exciting yet. We first sponsored the rally in 2016, after we found ourselves in a period of good growth, but struggling to make more people aware that one day car insurance existed. Thanks to the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB we ve been able to get our brand name in front of hundreds of thousands of people, both those attending the events and those watching at home. It s also a real pleasure to be able to contribute to the ongoing success of the rally, which is why we re delighted to confirm that we ll be sponsoring it for the third year running in 2018. This year s rally is set to be one of the most thrilling yet, with faster, more powerful cars, the introduction of new night stages and one of the most closely fought races in years. If you re new to rallying, this event is the perfect introduction to the second biggest motorsport competition in the world. I ll see you by the track side Dennis Ryan Founder of Dayinsure

An Introduction from Dayinsure HOW IT WORKS Dayinsure Wales Rally GB is a stage rally motor sport event and this year it is the 12th and final European round of the FIA World Rally Championship, the most challenging motor sport competition on the planet. The rally features a number of timed sections, known as stages. In short, the crew that completes all stages in the fastest time is the winner, however there are a number of things that can result in time penalties. Competitors drive between each stage on public roads, observing all traffic regulations, but if they re late to the starting point they ll receive a time penalty. Each crew will also have a certain amount of time that they can spend in the Deeside service park to have technicians work on the car. Exceed that time and there s another time penalty. Once the final times are in, points will be awarded to the top ten finishers on a 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 basis. The fastest time wins the rally and the points all get added to the competitors totals to determine who wins the championship.

EVENTS Alongside the stages deep in the forest, which have designated viewing areas for fans to watch the action up close, there are a number of special events that are perfect for families, first-time spectators and those looking for something more accessible. EVENT LAUNCH AT TIR PRINCE, CONWY New to the itinerary this year, Tir Prince plays host to the starting event of the rally. Watch the cars speed round the track in single file, tackling slaloms and a hairpin turn before the crews come to sign autographs for fans. There s a funfair and entertainment, plus great facilities and plenty of viewing available, so it s the perfect introduction to the weekend. It all starts at 3pm, with the first cars beginning demonstrations at 4pm. NEWTOWN AND CHESTER REGROUPS Much of Friday s action is centred around the forests of mid-wales, but there are also two prime opportunities to see the cars and meet the crews. Friday lunchtime sees the cars and crews regrouping in the centre of Newtown before beginning the afternoon stages. Once the day s stages are complete, the crews will pass through Chester city centre on their way back to the Deeside Rally Village. Two excellent opportunities to catch a glimpse of the action free of charge!

DEESIDE RALLY VILLAGE Located in Deeside, the Rally Village is where all the competing crews are based - in motor racing terms, it s the event s buzzing pits and paddock complex. This temporary village spans 45,000 square metres and takes over two weeks to build, providing the facilities needed for every car to perform at its best. Admission is free and fans of all ages can watch as the teams prepare their cars for the action in the fearsome forests. There s lots more to enjoy in the Rally Village too, with driver interviews, food outlets, trade stalls and a funfair. TOYOTA RALLYFEST AT CHOLMONDELEY CASTLE For a full day of viewing and entertainment, the Rallyfest at Cholmondeley Castle is a must-visit event, perfect for first time viewers and those attending with families. You ll see the stars of the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB racing around the parkland tracks that surround the stately home, plus catch some spectacular donuts and jumps. Alongside the action there s the chance to view some classic rally cars and supercars, get autographs and selfies with all the top drivers and a host of other attractions. There s also a catering village, a range of trade stands and excellent facilities, so you can have a full day of fun. Even better, kids go free! While you re at Rallyfest, be sure to stop by the Dayinsure Family Fun Village for a huge range of free games and activities for rally lovers of all ages. Scale the 18ft climbing wall, run riot in human hamster balls and reach for the sky on the 4-bed bungee trampoline. You ll also get the chance to take part in your own, remote-controlled races and we ll be collecting for local charities throughout the day. There s endless fun to be had, so don t miss out!

WHAT s NEW THIS YEAR? MORE POWERFUL CARS The cars racing in this year s rally are faster and more powerful than any we ve seen in recent years. While the World Rally Car regulations still allow just 1.6 L turbocharged engines, the turbo restrictor diameter increased, meaning that the permitted horsepower has increased from 310 to 380. What this means for the rally is that we ll see quicker accelerations and more dynamic cars, making for more exciting corners. TOYOTA GAZOO RACING WRT A new entrant to the championship in 2017, the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT represents the long-awaited WRC comeback for Toyota - a name synonymous with rallying success in the 1980s and 1990s. The Japanese manufacturer set up a new base in Finland led by rallying legend Tommi Mäkinen, with Juho Hänninen taking first seat in the new team. The withdrawal of Volkswagen from WRC freed up Jari-Matti Latvala for the second seat, with WRC 2 graduate Esapekka Lappi taking the third driver slot. At the time of writing Latvala and co-driver Matti Anttila held the fourth-place spot in the championship, so they re certainly ones to watch.

NIGHT STAGES After the crews finish the stages in the Dyfi forest on Saturday, they ll head to the Rallyfest at Cholmondeley Castle before going back to the Deeside Service Park to be fitted with powerful headlights for night races on the Aberhirnant and Dyfnant stages. Returning to the Wales Rally GB after a short absence, the evening stages add an extra challenge to the crews as they navigate the twists and turns of the forest roads in the dark. It promises to be an intense viewing experience - just remember to take a torch!

Who To Look Out For SÉBASTIAN OGIER M-S POR T WOR LD R ALLY T E AM With six rally wins in 2016 and four consecutive championship titles, Frenchman Sébastian Ogier is the one to beat. He s won every World Rally Championship since Sébastian Loeb announced his retirement at the end of 2012, ending his nine-year winning streak. Ogier has risen to the top of the league table with spectacular wins in Monte Carlo and Portugal, racing in an M-Sport for the first time after Volkswagen pulled out of the WRC last year. He hasn t won it yet however, there s still chance to snatch victory away from him and the other crews know it. As the penultimate rally of the championship, Wales is going to see some fiercely competitive driving as the drivers battle it out to take Ogier s crown.

THIERRY NEUVILLE HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT Despite suffering the setback of a noscore during the ADAC Rallye Deutschland earlier this year, Belgian driver Neuville is still hopeful of a championship win. After losing a wheel on the second day, Neuville was forced to retire, leaving a 17 point gap between him and championship front runner Sebastian Ogiers. The Wales Rally GB is a prime opportunity for him to close that gap, so we can expect some determined driving and a spectacular show from the man who has won more rallies than any other WRC driver this year. ELFYN EVANS M-SPORT WORLD RALLY TEAM One to watch! Hailing from Dolgellau in Snowdonia, Elfyn Evans is one of Wales most promising rally talents and enjoys huge support from fans. Returning to the top tier of the championship after racing in the WR2 last year, Evans took second place in the Argentina and Finland rallies and has placed in the top 10 for all but two of the other rallies.

Welsh rally driving legend Nicky Grist called them two of the best tracks in the world, and with 21 rally wins to his name, he s a more than reliable source. You ll hear the cars long before you see them, listening to the sound of the engines reverberate off the trees before you see the cars speed past along the side of the valley. FAQ s HOW LONG DOES THE ACTION LAST AT EACH STAGE? The rally cars can speed past pretty quickly, but that doesn t mean the action is short lived. On most of the stages there ll be two WRC runs, so each competitor does the full stage twice. Depending on the stage, there ll also be a national run in between, with a different set of competitors. There will be upwards of 75 cars in each run, so you can expect around an hour and a half of fast-paced action each time. Stay for all the runs, or just watch one and move on to another stage. It s up to you! HOW DOES SCORING WORK? Each rally features a number of timed sections, known as stages. In short, the crew that completes all stages in the shortest time is the winner, however there are a number of things that can result in time penalties. Competitors drive between each stage on public roads, observing all traffic regulations, but if they re late to the starting point they ll receive a time penalty. Each crew will also have a certain amount of time that they can spend in the Deeside service park to have technicians work on the car. Exceed that time and there s another time penalty. Once the final times are in, points will be awarded to the top ten finishers on a 25-18- 15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 basis. The fastest time wins the rally and the points all get added to the competitors totals to determine who wins the championship. WHO SHOULD I PUT MY MONEY ON? For the first time in a few years, the competition is wide open and impossible to call. Please pay attention at all times and take responsibility for your own safety - and that of others. There are some key guidelines to follow to ensure you have fun and stay safe during the rally: Respect the marshals and follow their instructions Observe the colour-coded tape and all signage Use the natural environment to protect yourself Don t walk on the rally stage Stay standing and remain alert Plan to be in your chosen location at least 45 minutes before the first car is due. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE? 1. Arrive at the car parks in plenty of time, as availability is on a first-come first-served basis. Check what time they open and make sure you get there early. Demand is high,

so arriving a couple of hours before the stage starts isn t normally enough time to guarantee you get a space. 2. Dress for the weather. You re going to be outdoors, in Wales, in October. Warm clothing is going to be essential, especially in the early morning, late afternoon and for any of the night stages. For any of the forest stages, remember to wear sensible, sturdy footwear, as the ground will be uneven. 3. Bring a torch if it s going to be dark, particularly if you re visiting a forest stage. 4. Please don t bring your dogs, as they can be startled by the loud noises or pose a danger to other. Disabled-assistance dogs are fine, as long as they remain on a lead at all times. 5. Cameras are great for catching the action, but be sensible with them. Remember to stay safe and don t leave the appropriate viewing areas, no matter how good you think the shot will be. Don t put your camera on the track, and don t bring a drone. There will be plenty of official photography catching all the action shots, so you won t miss out.
