SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS Jacksonville head coach John Galloway guided the Dolphins to a 3-11 record a year ago, including a 3-4 mark in SoCon action, in what was his first season as head coach. The Dolphins hit their stride at the end of the season, winning three (VMI, Mercer, Bellarmine) of their final five games. Jacksonville was picked to finish fourth in the 2018 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll behind reigning SoCon Champion Air Force (47 points, 6 first-place votes), Richmond (43 points, 2 first-place votes), and Furman (37 points). Galloway will rely upon senior Preseason All-SoCon selections to lead the way for the Dolphins this spring. Ryan Beville finished third on the team with 36 ground balls and caused four turnovers a year ago. The shortstick midfielder also recorded a pair of goals and three assists. Beville picked up at least one ground ball in each of his 12 appearances in 2017, and posted a season-high five at Duke (March 13) and against Air Force in the SoCon Tournament semifinals (May 4). A Second Team All-SoCon selection a year ago, midfielder McLean Chicquen led the team in goals scored (23) and points (35). He finished the season tied for fourth in the league averaging 2.50 points per game and seventh with 1.64 goals per game. He recorded at least one point in 12 of the Dolphins 14 games, including a pair of six-point performances against Mercer and Bellarmine. NAVY VS. Kenary scored four goals and added an assist, while Donovan Lang added two goals and two assists as Jacksonville defeated Navy, 13-7, in the Moe s Southwest Grill Classic at EverBank Field in Jacksonville. Goalie Peter DeLuca was strong in the cage for the Dolphins with 17 saves. Navy dominated the game statistically as the Mids outshot the Dolphins 42-24, had 36 ground balls to Jacksonville s 18, won 15 of the 24 face-offs, committed just 12 turnovers while forcing 20 turnovers and converted all 15 clear attempts. Statistics, however, can be deceiving at times as only 24 of Navy s 42 shots were on goal and the majority of the shots that were on goal ended up being easy saves for DeLuca. The Mids were also 0-4 on extra-man opportunities. On the defensive end of the field, Navy goalkeepers RJ Wickham (30 minutes, 4 saves, 8 goals allowed) and Nolan Hickey (30 min, 2 svs, 5 GA) combined for just six saves while giving up 13 goals. The Navy defense was also hampered by the absence of long stick defensive midfielder Pat Kiernan, who was out with a broken hand. Navy trailed 10-4 late in the third quarter before scoring three quick goals, one at the end of the third quarter by junior middie Bryce Dabbs and two to start the fourth quarter by sophomores Tucker Hull and Pat Durkin, to cut the Jacksonville lead in half at 10-7. The Mids had several opportunities to get closer, but poor shot selection doomed the comeback bid. Hull led the Mids with three goals, while Durkin scored twice. Second-year attackman Sam Jones and Dabbs each had a single tally. All seven of Navy s goals were unassisted. Sunday s contest marks just the sixth time in the last 18 years that Navy has opened its season on the road and the second time in as many years. Navy played its 2000, 04, 05, 06 and 17 openers on the road. Meeting for just the second time in series history, this is the first time the two schools have met in a season opener. In what is Navy s 111th season, this marks the 26th time Navy has opened its season in the month of February. The first time Navy played a game in the month of February was Feb. 29, 1992, when the Mids opened their season at #18 Penn State in a 16-9 losing effort. MEET OUR NATION S FUTURE LEADERS Navy s Class of 2018 has put together a 26-18 record over the last three seasons. The Mids were crowned 2016 Patriot League Regular-Season Champions and earned the program s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2009 when they received an at-large bid in 16. Navy s seniors will graduate on May 25 and be commissioned either 2nd Lieutenants in the Marine Corps or Ensigns in the Navy. REES, TORAIN AMONG NAVY S ELITE MIDFIELDERS In 2016, Casey Rees etched his name in as one of the program s top-scoring midfielders. As the team s thirdleading scorer, he produced 37 points on a team-best 34 goals and 3 assists. The 37 points are tied as the sixth most by a midfielder in school history. The 34 goals are the most by a Navy player since 2004 when Joe Bossi pumped in 44 and Ian Dingman scored 36... meanwhile, the 34 goals are the third most in program history by a midfielder and the most since Brian Keith set the record of 41 in 1989. 26 of his 37 points were scored against Patriot League foes, while he scored just 11 points against nonconference opponents. Last season, Greyson Torain stepped up his game and was tied as the Mids leading scorer with 38 points alongside Ryan Wade (13-25=38). Torain recorded a team-high tying 23 goals and dealt out 15 assists. The last time a midfielder led Navy in scoring was in 2010 when Pat Moran totaled 38 points on 28 goals and 10 assists. Torain s 38 points are tied as the fourth most by mifielder in school history and the most since Moran s 38 in 2010. The 14 assists, meanwhile, are the most by a Navy midfielder since Andy Warner dealt out 21 in 2011. Torain is one of just 15 different midfielders in Navy history who have scored 30 or more points in a season. It has been accomplished 22 times with Graham Gill (2004-05), Jamie Slough (1992-93-94), Brian Keith (1989-90), Glen Miles (1984-86) and Mike Chanenchuk (1977-78-79) having done it multiple times over their careers. One of Torain s most incredible stats is 30 of his 40 career goals have been unassisted, including 18 of 23 last season. Team IMPACT s mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Established in 2011, Team IMPACT has matched over 900 children with collegiate teams at over 400 institutions in 45 states, improving the quality of life of hundreds of courageous children and touching the lives of over 25,000 student-athletes. For more information about the program, log on to www. goteamimpact.org(.) Here s a little more about Navy s favorite teammate - Grayson is in first grade. He lives with his parents Dan and Danielle, brother Holden, sister Annabelle, and their dog Fitz. Outside of school, Gray loves legos, all things Star Wars, outdoor activities and being read to - especially Curious George stories! But his favorite activity is blowing the whistle at Navy lacrosse practices for the faceoff drills. Gray has a tremendous heart, a natural ability to put others first and to keep a smile on through even the most difficult circumstances. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE Since 2000, Navy s defense has been ranked among the top five nine times, including #1 three times (2000-05-06). Whether it s the added military training, mandatory room or uniform inspections or the academic schedule, Service Academy student-athletes are in a league of their own. The Naval Academy s academic day is divided into six 50-minute class periods beginning at 7:55 am and concluding at 3:20 pm. Unique to the Academies, all 4,400 Midshipmen reside on the Yard in Bancroft Hall and dine together in King Hall. Some of those brothers attended the Academy at the same time, like the Looneys (Brendan 04, Steve 06, Billy 07) and the Lennons (Clipper 05, Bobby 09, Joe 10). Others, like Shane ( 09), Pat ( 14) and Brendan ( 16) Durkin, just missed playing alongside one another. Navy has one sets of brothers on this season s squad - Casey ( 18) and Spencer ( 21) Rees. Older brother, Matt, was a four-year letterwinner and two-time All- American long-stick midfielder for the Mids who graduated last May. The Rees father, Cliff ( 88) played basketball alongside David Robinson at Navy and earned a trip to the Elite 8 his Plebe year. Matt and Casey Rees are among just four sets of brothers who have earned All-America honors while playing for the Midshipmen. They join the Looney s (Steve and Billy), the Supko s (Len and Denny) and the MacLaughlin s (Don and Harry). Junior midfielder Ryan Wade and 2017 graduate Connor Wade, who played goalkeeper for the Mids, are the sons of two-year lacrosse letterwinner Rear Adm. John Wade ( 90) and nephew of three-year lacrosse letterwinner Tim Andrews ( 88). Senior defenseman Steve Hincks father, Steven ( 78), garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors as a defenseman for the Mids his senior year. As a freshman he was a member of the team that played in the program s first NCAA Championship Game and was an NCAA Semifinalist the following three seasons. Sophomore attackman Connor Young s father, Steve, is a 1984 graduate of the Naval Academy and was a member of the football and soccer teams. Freshman attackman Joe Byrne has a familiar last name around the Yard. That s because nearly everyone in his immediate family has graduated from the Naval Academy. His father, Bill, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1987 and later served as the Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy from 2013-15. A Rear Admiral in the Navy, he assumed command of Carrier Strike Group 15 in October of 2017. A three-year football letterwinner, he was co-captain of the 1986 team. One of just three quarterbacks in Navy history to throw for more than 1,000 yards in three different seasons, he holds the school record for career touchdown passes (29) and ranks second in school history in career completions (381), single-game passing yards (399) and career passing yards (4,582). He also holds the school record for single-game completions (37). His mother, Amy, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1987 and was a member of the cross country and track & field teams. His sister, Brigid, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2013 and was a member of the cross country and track & field teams. His brother, Michael, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2016 and was a member of the sprint football team. His sister, Martha, is a senior at the Naval Academy and was a member of the women s lacrosse team her first two years in Annapolis. Freshman midfielder George Martin s father, George, is a 1991 graduate of the Naval Academy who was a member of the golf team. CARTER RETURNS TO THE FIELD Navy senior defenseman Hiram Carter is back on the field after missing nearly the entire 2017 season due to a back injury. Carter, who last year moved to short-stick defensive midfield, saw action in the first four games before he was shut down for the season. Not only will he return to the field on Sunday, he is expected to be in the starting lineup at close defense. Carter was a starter on defense in 15 of the 16 games during the Mids NCAA Tournament run in 2016. 8 HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE 2018 marks the 57th season Navy will have played at least one game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy earned a 5-1 victory over Delaware on Feb. 21, 2016, in what was the program s 200th game played at the stadium. The Mids own a 132-80 record (62.3) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Having played at least a game a year at the stadium for 42 consecutive years, Navy stepped away in 2003, allowing for state-of-the-art renovations to take place. Navy has played all of its home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since the beginning of the 2004 campaign. Navy owns a 64-34 record (65.3) in games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since the start of the 2004 campaign. Since 2004, Navy has lost back-to-back games at home just 10 times. In its 110th year of men s lacrosse, Navy has lost 3 straight home games just 9 times... 1980 #1 Virginia, #2 Johns Hopkins, #9 N. Carolina 1985 Washington College, N. Opponents have scored double digits against the Mids 24 times in games played on their home field over the last 14 seasons. Navy owned a 7-2 record in games played at home in 2016. It s the first time it has won seven home games since 2007 (7-1). Navy won six straight games at home in 2016 before dropping its Patriot League Tournament contest to Army. The Mids had not won six straight at home in a single season since 2005. Meanwhile, it was Navy s first six-game single-season home winning streak since 1987. Navy put together a 4-0 mark in Patriot League regularseason games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in 2016. It s the first time Navy has been undefeated in Patriot League play at home since 2010 when it was 2-0. It s the first time the Mids have been 4-0 in Patriot League action at home since 2004. TIP OF THE HAT Since the start of the 2004 season, at least one Navy player has turned in a hat trick in 136 of the last 207 games. Among those 136 games, the Mids have won 95 of them. NAVY IN OVERTIME Navy owns a 19-24 all-time record in overtime contests, including a 10-14 mark in games at home. 28 of the 43 games have been decided in a single overtime period, however 9 have gone into double OT, 4 into three extra frames, 1 into four and 1 into six. The Mids dropped a 12-11 double-overtime heartbreaker to #5 Johns Hopkins on Feb. 9 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It marked just the fifth time in the 90-game series history the game had been decided in extra frames and the first double-ot game between the two. Hopkins has won four of the five. Navy also dropped its first game in the series to Boston U. on Feb. 27, a double-ot matchup (10-9). The Mids bounced back with an 11-10 victory in overtime at Army (4.16). It was just the fourth time in the 96-game history that the game went into extra minutes and the first since 1991. Perhaps no overtime game in school history gained more attention than when Andy Warner etched his name into Naval Academy lore by way of his overtime goal against 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins in 2010, snapping a 36-game losing streak to the Blue Jays. It was the Mids first win over Hopkins since 1974. Navy pulled out a 9-8 triple-overtime victory over Colgate in the 2009 Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. Midfielder Joe Lennon scored four goals for the Mids, including the last three. It marked the Mids first OT win in postseason action, as Navy previously lost NCAA Tournament decisions to Cortland State (2OT) in 1972 and Washington & Lee (3OT) in 1973. The Navy win also went down in the record books as the longest Patriot League Tournament contest. The Mids 8-7 loss against Cornell in 2008 marked the first time in program history that Navy had played an overtime game at a neutral site. SOWELL AMONG ELITE COMPANY Seventh-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell is just the third lacrosse coach overall in the sport s history and the only active coach to lead three different D-I programs to the NCAA Tournament. Sowell guided Dartmouth to the 2003 NCAA Tourney, Stony Brook to the 2010 NCAA Quarterfinals and Navy in 2016. Joining him on that list are Jack Emmer and Tony Seaman. Denver s Bill Tierney (RIT, Princeton, Denver), Cornell s Matt Kerwick (Alfred, Hobart, Cornell) and Stony Brook s Jim Nagle (SUNY Oneonta, Colgate, Stony Brook) have also led three teams to the NCAA Championship, however, not all three were D-I programs. Navy 125 4-15.17 Army 10-6 Annapolis, Md. Navy HEAD COACH RICK SOWELL On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100-plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since 2009. Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. In 2014, the Mids earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since 2010. Sowell guided Navy to a share of the Patriot League regularseason title in 2015 and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. He was named the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Sowell garnered Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for a second straight year in 2016, led the Mids to the league s regular-season crown and the program s first NCAA Tournament bid since 2009. Additionally, Navy s opening-round win over Yale was the program s first NCAA Tournament win since 2008. Sowell compiled a 47-26 (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles (2010-11). In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first final four, losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, 10-9. Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20. It marked the school s first end-of-theseason national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since 1995. Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in 2005. Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from 1999-2003 and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since 1958. Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA D-III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in 1987. Sowell was named the 1985 D-III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the D-III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him D-III First-Team All- America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history. 12
