PO Box 7005 Banyule VIC 3084 www.banyulebears.com ROUND SEVEN With the Thirds forfeiting their game on the weekend it was up to the Seniors and Reserves to put on a show for any supporters keen enough to travel down to Sunbury for our matchup against Rupertswood. The Salesian College oval held up well during the wet week and provided a great surface for both games, which we took advantage of coming home with two very important wins. The seniors win put the club in a good place to avoid relegation this season and continue concentrating on a tilt at the finals, while the Reserves win saw a few younger players put their hands up to become regulars in the side. The club is still struggling with injuries, and the turn out at this weeks trainings was less than impressive. If we re going to have a serious shot at the finals this year it is up to each and every player to get down to training and to look after their bodies! This week we have a triple-header at home with the two senior teams playing Mazenod and the Thirds taking Whitefriars on the cabbage patch. It could be our first clean sweep for the year with all games more than winnable. So get down to the cave and show your support for the club. GO BEARS!
SENIORS It was a blistering opening quarter against Rupertswood on the weekend, with Barcs booting four majors before most of the seconds had had the chance to take off their boots. Storming out of the blocks we left Rupo in our dust in the first quarter, leading at the first break by 28 points. It took Rupertswood until halfway through the second period to put their heads down and offer a serious contest, but by the time they got into the groove of things the major break rolled around, with our boys ahead by a match-winning 42 points. In the second half Rupo showed us that they could play, as the slowed down our run with some harder attack on the footy in the increasingly slippery conditions, but as the rain began to fall it was too big of a task to pull us back. In the end Rupo won the second half 32 to 18, but left their run far too late to claw back a win. We won the day by the margin at quarter time, 28 points. Barcs finished the day with seven, despite a first quarter where he looked on track to hit double digits, and Twiggy dominated the half back line rebounding anything that came nearby. Other bests on the day were the usual suspects in Walshy, Jakey T, Tom Shep and Gayfs. The Seniors will play HOME against Mazenod this week, starting at 2:30PM. RESERVES The Reserves had a belter of a game on their hands last weekend. Much like the Seniors they jumped the gates early dominating the first period, particularly across the backline where Rupo struggled to enter their forward 50, and were unable to kick a major for the entire opening quarter. We went into the second quarter with a handy 22 point lead, which was quickly accounted for a Rupo put the foot down and began to run some quick passages of play up the ground to their forwards. In the second quarter we were caught snoozing and saw our lead trickle back to just four points at the long break. In the third it was an arm wrestle, with both teams kicking 2.2.14. We looked in control for patches but let ourselves down allowing them some easy movement of the ball into their forward line. It all came down to the final quarter, where our backs held up the ball and our mids pushed to keep it moving our way. By the end of the day we managed to take out a 17 point win in what was a very good game. Lewis Melton got plenty of votes for his strong hands and a solid four-quarter performance, while the O Callaghan brothers both dominated much of the contested ball. Ian Stokes also utilised his size in a very strong performance. The Reserves will play HOME against Mazenod this week, starting at 11:40AM.
THIRDS Due to a lack of numbers on the weekend the Thirds were forced to forfeit. The Reserves will play HOME against Whitefriars this week, starting at 11:00AM.
