SWIM WALES Commonwealth Games Selection Policy Glasgow, Scotland 23 rd July to 3 rd August 2014 The swimming team for individual events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games will be selected from the following two meets in three stages. 1. Stage 1 World Championships 2013 (28 th July to 4 th August 2013) or USA Open (30 th to 3 rd August 2013) Stage 1 IPC World Championships (August 2013) Disability Long Course Dutch Nationals (June 2013) 2. Stage 2 British National Championships 10 th 15 th April 2014. Glasgow 3. Stage 3 The Top Up Trials Cardiff International Meet 6 th 8 th June 2014 Please Note dates maybe subject to change. Disability Selection Standards (these standards will be inserted in October 2012) Males Classification Event Time S9 (S7 & S8) 100 Freestyle 1:00.76 S14 200 Freestyle 2:06.56 SM8 (SM7) 200 Ind Medley 2:40.05 Female Classification Event Time S8 (S7) 100 Freestyle 1:17.77 SB9 (SM8) 100 Breaststroke 1:27.15 SM10 (SM9) 200 Ind Medley 2:37.70 Stage 1 World Championships 2013 / US Nationals 2013 Swimmers achieving the selection standards in the World Championships 2013 / USA Nationals 2013 / IPC World Championships 2013 / Disability Long Course Dutch Nationals (June 2013) will be automatically selected for that event. In the case of a swimmer selected for the World Championship Team or US Open Team but unable to swim an event where they achieved the Selection Standard at the World Championship Trials (British Nationals Sheffield 26 30 June 2013 / British International Disability Meet Sheffield 22 28 April 2013) these will be considered in the Stage One Selections. Only 2 swimmers per event will be selected at Stage One. In the case of 3 or more swimmers achieving the qualifying time the fastest 2 swimmers will be selected for that event. Stage 2 British Nationals March 2014 Swimmers achieving the selection standards in the British Nationals March 2014 will be selected to that event provided there are places available after the Stage 1 selections. Should three Swimmers achieve the qualifying time in the remaining events at the Stage 2 trials then no further swimmers will be allowed to qualify for that event. In the case of more swimmers than places remaining in an event achieve the qualifying time the fastest swimmers will be selected for that event. Stage 3 Top Up Trials. Swimmers will be added to the team provided they achieve a selection standard in the Stage 3 Top Up Trials and provided spaces for that event are still available from the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Trials.
In the case of more swimmers achieving the qualifying time than spaces remaining in the Stage 3 Trials then the fastest swimmers at the Stage 3 Trial will be selected. Relay Nomination Standards FEMALE EVENT MALE 4:05.88 4 x 100 Medley 3:40.68 3:49.48 4 x 100 Freestyle 3:20.70 7:58.92 4 x 200 Freestyle 7:16.57 Relay Teams will be nominated provided the swimmers collectively achieve the Relay Nomination Standards from times at any of the identified meets above. If a swimmer achieves an individual selection in the above meets their Best Time from the British Long Course Rankings from previous years can be considered for relay selection purposes. Medley Relay Selections The fastest ranked swimmers from the above schedule of meets in the 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Butterfly, 100 Freestyle will be considered for the Medley Relay. Additional swimmers may be nominated provided that the collective time is still achieved when one swimmer is directly replaced by the 2 nd fastest swimmer in the 100 metre event for that given stroke. Freestyle Relay The fastest 4 ranked swimmers from the above schedule of meets in the 100 and 200 freestyle events will be considered for the Freestyle Relay. The 5 th ranked freestyle swimmer may be nominated to compete in that relay provided that the times of the slowest 4 swimmers is equal to or better than the Relay Nomination Standard. Relay Takeover Tolerance The collective times will be reduced by 2.25 seconds to reflect the relay takeovers. The final make up of all relays at the Commonwealth Games will be decided by the National Performance Director and the Coaches of the Team. The National Performance Director may call for swim offs prior to the relay events. Specific Relay Conditions
In the event of Relay Swimmers not achieving the above times the National Performance Director will at his discretion nominate Relays to the Commonwealth Games Council for Selection provided they are deemed as potential top 5 finishers at the Games or Developmental Swimmers for 2018. Swimmers specifically selected for Relays will have to have shown a commitment to Team Swimming in the previous 2 years prior to selections. Developmental Selections If after the Stage 3 and Relay Selections are complete the team size is less than 16 then Developmental Selections will be made as follows. Male Swimmers aged 20 years and under born 1994 or later. Female Swimmers aged 19 years and under born 1995 or later. Provided they achieve the Developmental Qualifying Times and there are remaining places available for selection after the Stage 3 Trials. Developmental Times can be achieved in either the Stage 1 or Stage 2 or Stage 3 Meets. In the case of more developmental swimmers achieving the qualifying time than spaces remaining after the Stage 3 Trials then the fastest swimmers from either the Stage 1 or Stage 2 or Stage 3 Trials will be selected. If at the end of Stage 3 the total team size exceeds 16 swimmers then the developmental swimmers will be ranked using FINA Long Course Points to decide which developmental swimmers will be added to the team. Specific Conditions Only the above identified meets will be considered for selection. Only swimmers eligible and available to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games will be considered for selection. No splits including lead off legs in relays will be considered for selection. Time trials will not be considered for selection. Only 3 swimmers per event can be selected. Selected Swimmers may be entered in additional events if approved by the Swim Wales National Performance Director.
Swimmers becoming ill or injured at any time between the selection opportunities must notify Swim Wales immediately and will be required to undertake a full medical examination which may result in the swimmer being withdrawn from the team. All Team Members may be subjected to fitness (land/water) and or medical tests at any time between selection meets and the 2014 Commonwealth Games. All Team Members will be required to sign and comply with both the Commonwealth Games Federation and Swim Wales Code of Conduct. All Team Members will be expected to attend programmed training camps. Any individual exceptions must be agreed by the National Performance Director and the swimmers home coach. Staff Selections The Team Manager and Swim Wales National Performance Director have already been appointed to the Team Staff. One Coach will be selected in September 2012 to assist the National Performance Director to oversee the Relay Effort. Two additional Coaches will be considered for selection subject to available accreditations based on Highest Ranked Swimmer using their selection times to be placed in the Commonwealth Rankings Long Course at the end of 2013 (3 swimmers per Commonwealth Nation). Coaches must have been resident within the UK for a minimum period of two years prior to the start of the 2014 Commonwealth Games unless employed or deployed by British Swimming or Swim Wales. Being resident in Wales for a minimum period of two years prior to the start of the 2014 Commonwealth Games unless employed or deployed by British Swimming or Swim Wales. Subject to interview by the National Performance Director with a view to balancing the team coaching staff. All selections are subject to approval of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales.
