The best interest of students will always be our first priority, and we will make sure that we never forget that fact.

Page2 Janet Xu: St. Peter Marian Standout By Susan Wessling Some two-and-a-half years ago, Janet Qiling Xu arrived at St. Peter-Marian from China and faced many challenges. Academically, socially and culturally she floundered, SPM College Counselor Kelli Reyngoudt said. That scenario no longer holds true for this special international student. An honor roll student who has been involved in St. Peter Marian s Art and Fashions Clubs, Janet is a senior at SPM and heading to Assumption College in the fall. Personally and socially, Janet is one of my favorite seniors, Reyngoudt said. She stops by often and I am always laughing by the time she departs. She is quickwitted, honest, at times silly, and fun-loving. More than most of our other international students, Janet has developed a rapport with our faculty and staff that is Americanized. She is at ease engaging with adults. She is comfortable asking for help. She can joke and play around and is comfortable sharing personal stories and insights. We have had had great conversations concerning divergent attributes of American vs. Chinese teenagers. For her part, Janet appreciates the relationships she has with the SPM faculty and staff. They treat us like friends. They have (had) a lot of patience with the international students, especially when we first came here, she said. They help us out, answer our questions and solve our problems. They understand that sometimes we need more time. Janet came with EduBoston s first class of students to St. Peter-Marian. At the most there Janet Xu were 10 (Chinese) students here, she said. For us that meant we made American friends. Janet picked SPM because of its high number of AP classes. I also like the low teacher-tostudent ratio, and there were ESL classes (through EduBoston) that helped us out when we first got here, she added. SPM Principal Denise Allain noted that Janet had communication issues when she arrived at the school in the winter of 2011. But she did want to become involved, Allain said. She had great determination and great motivation.

Page3 Today, Janet s communication skills are quite good, according to Allain. Her spoken English is superb and she still has that same drive and determination. She is very involved in school. She is a pleasure, a joy. The SPM senior will make a good addition to Assumption, Allain said. I am very proud she is going to Assumption. Its academic standards are very high, Allain said. I am thrilled for her. Janet was pleased to be offered a scholarship to go to Assumption. They are very good in marketing and business, she said. I am thinking of two majors, marketing or science, biology. Janet wanted to stay in Central Massachusetts. I like the Worcester area. There were a lot of choices (of colleges and universities here), she said. I went for an interview at Assumption. It was not too big. I like that. Reyngoudt said she is pleased Janet will be studying in Worcester as an undergraduate. She has been so comfortable here and has a very close relationship with her host family with whom she plans to continue to reside, either full-time or during school vacations, Reyngoudt said. This is a win-win for Janet and our school as we will be able to keep in touch with her, Reyngoudt added. I am eager to hear about all of her future successes. Janet celebrated her birthday American style! Photo by Garret Walker She is very involved in school. She is a pleasure, a joy. SPM Principal Denise Allain

Page4 FAMILY FOCUS: THE TOWNSENDS By Joan Louis and Susan Wessling Kelly Townsend, a host mom at Central Catholic High School (CCHS), has a household brimming with activity. It wasn t always that way. A single mom with a daughter attending CCHS, she was referred to EduBoston by another host family, Dawn Holdsworth. I knew after speaking with Kelly for a few minutes that she would be a good host family for us, EduBoston Program Manager Joan Louis said. Townsend is hosting two students a senior, Emma Wen Cai, and a sophomore, Snow Xueqing Wang. Townsend s daughter, Riley, is a junior. I am pretty connected to Central Catholic High and I know other people who have hosted and they really enjoyed having a student, Townsend said. I was worried (before they came) that they would just talk to each and I was worried what they would eat. There has been none of that. They both have really good relationships to each other and with me and my daughter. I spend separate time with all three of them. Townsend s daughter Riley is the manager of the Central Catholic wrestling team and she works at a vet. Snow, a dancer in China, is a Central Catholic cheerleader. She also has worked with the dance team, choreographing a routine for them. She performed with a few other EduBoston students and the dance team for the spirit week show. It was amazing. She is a very typical American girl. She is full of life, very bright, very dedicated to school, Townsend said. Snow is jumping and cheering and doing cartwheels in the house. Senior Emma is an accomplished artist. Her expression comes through her art. She is always very focused on what she is doing, Townsend said. Emma has been with the EduBoston program for over two years. During this time, she has excelled academically. She is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society. She has also received many other academic accolades. Notably one was an offer of a $15,000 scholarship to an accredited university during her junior year. Emma s artistic talents have put her in the spotlight as well. Her art work is recognized by many galleries. She has received a $500 award for one of her paintings, Louis said. The gallery that purchased her artwork sent a special courier to pick up the painting at the school. Emma also received a Gold Key award from The Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards on March 3. Townsend attended the ceremony with her.

Page5 They are wonderful girls, Townsend said. I didn t even know how much they would bring to my life. There was just the two of us, and now with the four of us we sit down to have dinner for one an hour and we just talk. It has added so much to our lives; it has added so much to our family. Townsend noted that she has three only children living as siblings. It has been great. I am really lucky, she said. I have really good kids. Above: Emma, Riley, and Snow enjoy the holidays. Proceeds from the event will benefit the academic and co-curricular programs, financial aid and athletics.

Page6 It was a wonderful evening with good people and good food. Our own student Bob Yuanbo Liu provided the background music and played the piano during the reception and throughout the evening. It was a very festive affair. EduBoston sponsored the event with full page recognition in the program book as well as a table sponsor. The Allure of Blanc de Chine Wednesday, March 6, 2013 - Saturday, August 31, 2013 Worcester Art Museum Chinese Gallery 55 Salisbury Street Worcester, MA 01609 Blanc de Chine refers to a white ware that was produced for centuries in the town of Dehua in the coastal province of Fujian. The sugary white clay of the Dehua area is made from a porcelain stone that is unusually low in iron impurities

Page8 and fuses with the applied transparent glaze during the firing, producing works of a glossy, smooth quality that resembles ivory or white jade. The clay is ideally suited for the production of thickly potted, press-molded and/or sculpted vessels and figurines. Many such functional and decorative works are finely detailed or embellished with applied relief decoration, such as blossoms or dragons. Porcelain production began in Dehua as early as the Song dynasty (960-1279) and flourished from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. At first widely exported to Southeast Asia and Japan, blanc de Chine soon also found a market among European royalty and aristocrats when it was imported by various European trading companies. Western interest in blanc de Chine gradually waned as Europeans discovered the secrets of porcelain manufacture. Dehua kilns have continued to produce white ware figures into the modern age. 34th Annual Cambridge River Festival Banks of the Charles River, Cambridge 344 Broadway Cambridge, MA 02139 Sat, Jun 1, 2013, 12 Noon - 6 pm Description: This one-day celebration of the arts, attracts 200,000 annually.
