With Texas also advancing to Regionals, the Big 12 placed at least two teams in the Sweet 16 for the 10th-consecutive season (since 2008). This year marked the eighth-consecutive in which at least 70 percent of Big 12 teams participated in postseason play. The Big 12 s six NCAA Championship bids marked the 10th time out of 11 years for at least six squads to make the field. The Big 12 was the only league with 60 percent of its teams chosen in 2017. Including this year s selections, the Big 12 has 128 appearances in the NCAA Championship and 41 in the WNIT for a total of 169 postseason bids since inception in 1996-97. Baylor won its seventh-consecutive and eighth overall Big 12 regular season title while West Virginia captured its first Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship to earn the Conference s automatic NCAA bid. Fifty percent of Conference teams finished in the top 37 of the final NCAA RPI while all 10 teams were in the top 70 for strength of schedule. The Big 12 closed out the season by hosting the Women s Final Four in front of sold-out crowds in Dallas American Airlines Center. It was the Championship s first appearance in Dallas. Storrs, Conn. P OSTSEASON S S O NOTES Big 12 Season Ends in Regionals The Big 12 s 2016-17 season ended in the NCAA Regionals. No. 3 seed Texas fell in the Sweet 16 to No. 2 Stanford while No. 1 seed Baylor lost an overtime decision to No. 2 Mississippi State in the Elite Eight. The Lady Bears made their 12th Regional appearance and ninth straight. The Elite Eight appearance was their eighth and fourth consecutive. Texas played in its 14th Sweet 16 and third straight. The Big 12 advanced at least two teams to the Sweet 16 for the 10th-consecutive season since 2008. Big 12 Results in Regional Games Big 12 teams have made 53 appearances in the Sweet 16 since 1997, including the two in 2017. The league has compiled a 20-33 (.377) record from 1997-17. The 20 teams that advanced to the Elite Eight registered an 8-12 (.400) mark. Big 12 squads won Regionals in 2002 (Oklahoma), 2003 (Texas), 2005 (Baylor), 2009 (Oklahoma), 2010 (Baylor and Oklahoma), 2011 (Texas A&M) and 2012 (Baylor). The high mark for the Big 12 is five Regional appearances during the 2002 NCAA Championship, however three were in the same Regional. The Conference advanced four teams in 2001 and 2010. PHILLIPS P 66 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES No. 6 seed West Virginia upset three ranked teams and the top three seeds to win its first Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship since joining the league in 2012-13. The conference postseason title was the Mountaineers second all-time (1989). West Virginia is the eighth different team to win a Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship crown. Baylor leads the pack with eight postseason titles, all since 2005. WVU is the second No. 6 seed to advance through the bracket to win the Big 12 Championship, joining Oklahoma in 2004 when the conference had 12 teams. Both No. 6 seed titles were over the No. 1 seed. The 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship was played in Oklahoma City s Chesapeake Energy Arena for the third time in four years, and was contested in Oklahoma City for the fourth time. The 2007 and 2009 postseason events were played in Cox Convention Center. The Championship will return to Oklahoma City in 2018 and 2019. Baylor entered the Championship as the No. 1 seed after winning its seventhconsecutive and eighth overall Big 12 regular season title. Nine different teams have entered the Championship as the No. 1 seed. Baylor leads the pack with eight appearances followed by Oklahoma with four as the top seed.
