PRESIDENTS REPORT What do you do when the ball stops rolling?? Football has hit record popularity, believe it or not, Football is now more popular than netball in female participation, Football has held the mantle as the most played sport in Australia for the past 25 years and yet less money and help is offered at grass root level than ever before. So what will happen when the ball stops rolling? Every day in Australia, a parent gets up, heads to the sporting fields and gets ready to do the line marking, every day a dad finishes work, packs the car with balls, smelly bibs and cones and heads off to coach a team of future stars, the long afternoons turn into cold winter nights, weekends just disappear as the football season consumes so much of your Saturday, you will no doubt need Sunday to recover. Every weekend a mum or dad missed out on watching his/her son/daughter play, because they have to serve hot food in the canteen for the whole day. This is not unique to football, it is part of every sport in Australia, some clubs deal with it differently, some clubs charge a canteen levy, others roster a group of parents, others ask volunteers to help out for a couple of hours. I went to a shop owned by the secretary of a local sporting club, she tells me how tired she is of all the time and effort she has to put into their club, she shows me a letter freshly typed and ready to send to all her club members, she begs for help as her strong proud club can easily be brought to its knees simply because no-one wants to help.
PRESIDENTS REPORT Continued.. I remember the email I got from a dad who said Club volunteers do it, because they have power issues, and so they can tell everyone poor me, look at how much I do, I would gladly spend my Saturday watching my son play football while sitting comfortably in a chair under the warm Saturday sun!! But then I look at the huge number of amazing coaches that have given their time to coach one of our teams, I look to the canteen and see so many friends helping stock the fridge, pack lollies and cook chips so hungry kids have something to eat while at the club, I look to the field and see the number of dads that rocked up early ready to help setup the fields, take bins out and put the corner flags. The phrase Australia the lucky country is used very often, I think one of the best things Australia has is the huge volunteer base, just remember the Sydney Olympics!! What we must all ensure is that while some people do so much, we all still pull our way. As a foreigner the phrase I hear more than any other is People that come here must integrate, and I agree, but I say to you lead the way, show me how much time you spend helping in the community, show me how much you volunteer.then and only then We will truly be the lucky country!! Without volunteers and your help, the ball might just stop rolling. Nic Basile
