4-H Leadership Camp Report Dear fellow KLH 4-Hers, Throughout my 6 years in 4-H I have attended many 4-H opportunities including YAC, Judge It! and numerous Go For The Gold competitions. Each event has provided me with different learning opportunities, fully endorsing the 4-H motto of Learn to Do by Doing. By attending Provincial Leadership Camp this past march break I was able to experience the 4-H program in a way that I had never before. I had a special perk on top of just being a camper, I also celebrated my birthday at camp and boy was it an amazing way to spend a sweet sixteen. My experience started in the days leading up to camp when I was shown just how friendly the campers who were attending camp were when I was added to a camp group chat. Everyone was discussing their previous 4-H experiences and how excited everyone was for the coming opportunity. This excitement continued all the way to camp. There were discussions about how far everyone had to drive to camp. Some campers woke up at 5:30 to catch a train, others took a plane from northern Ontario the day before, and there were some like myself, who simply had an hour and a half car ride. Though there were 80 campers coming from across the province I could already feel that we were all about to become great friends. Though I already knew a number of the campers, it wasn't hard to make new friends once we all got to camp. We were split into leadership groups and dove right into working as a team. The whole camp was so welcoming and enthusiastic and I found that it really helped me be open and enthusiastic. I was super surprised when my team voted me as the lieutenant on the first evening, giving me the opportunity to step up and be a leader. As the week progressed and myself and others moved through the ranks as lieutenant and captain I was able to see that the camp was all about embracing who you are and using your own abilities. Though some campers were quiet at times, there were moments for every camper to shine and be a leader. Some of the activities included group facilitation times like evening programing and wake-up call, leadership group competitions and even leading others in a dance. Like many other 4-H opportunities, PLC combined fun with learning. One of my most memorable learning moments at the camp was while we were working on our public speaking abilities. Most times public speaking is something no-one looks forward to, but is a necessary ability to have when leading. The environment at camp made public speaking not seem like an uncomfortable feat to accomplish at all. Some speeches demonstrated a campers knowledge, some showed humour and some were even truly emotional tellings. Seeing campers step out of their comfort zone and take risks throughout the camp deepened our bond even more. Looking back at my experience at camp it was truly a life changing week that I wish could never end. It is so hard to put into words how incredible PLC is and the people who I attended it with. Through experience I have learned that the best way to experience 4-H is to dive right into it and get involved. If you are a 4-H member that is too young to attend an event like PLC, bucket list it, but don t let all the other amazing 4-H opportunities pass you by. Take full advantage of this life changing program and learn to do by doing! - Maggie-Jo Hickson Attention: News Reporters Here are 3 ways to get the word out and promote your club s activities and events! 1.
