Idaho Women s Basketball Game Notes - Dec. 28, 2009 On Tap This Week: The Vandal women will play their final non-conference matchup of the year on Monday when they host former Big West rival, UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are 3-7 overall and come into the game after backto-back losses to UCLA and Pepperdine. Both teams enter the game well-rested, as neither has played since Dec. 20. The game tips off at 7 p.m. (PST) at Memorial Gym. A Look at UC Santa Barbara UC Santa Barbara is 3-7 so far this year, and has dropped three of its last five games. The team is off to its slowest start since the 1983-84 season. Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb is in her second season at the helm. The Gauchos are 2-2 in road games this year, including a win at Oregon State, and 1-5 in home games. UCSB averages 58.0 points per game, while allowing 62.4. The Gauchos shoot.431 overall from the floor, but just.246 (30-122) from 3-point range. Their two-point field goal percentage is a remarkable.490 (189-386). From the free-throw line, UCSB hits at a.644 clip and averages 11.2 freebies per game. One thing the Gauchos do very well is alter shots. UCSB ranks fifth in the NCAA with 6.7 blocked shots per game, led by Mekia Valentine, whose 4.4 blocks per game rank seventh individually in the nation. Sophomore guard Emilie Johnson leads the team with a 14.2 scoring average, while Valentine follows closely behind with 13.9 points per contest. Valentine also leads the team in rebounding (7.1) and in field goal percentage (.627). In 2004 and 2005, Idaho and UC Santa Barbara battled twice for the Big West title, with the Gauchos winning both times. The last time the two teams played was the 2005 Big West Championship game, which UCSB won by a 74-66 margin. Overall, UCSB holds a 17-4 edge in the series. Idaho s last win came on Feb. 3, 2005, 56-52, at the Cowan Spectrum. Last Time on the Court: A slow first half created the hole and a strong second period wasn t quite enough to climb out of it on Sunday for the Idaho women s basketball team at Long Beach State. Idaho (1-11) shot 25.9 percent from the field and turned it over 14 times in the first half to put itself down by as many as 14 points to Long Beach State (4-7). The Vandals came back with a 48.0 percent clip in the second and a tighter defensive effort, but it wasn t enough to overcome the 49ers in a 65-53 loss at the Walter Pyramid. I told them afterward, all these games are going the same, Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. We start out good, the other team takes the lead, takes a bigger lead, we battle all the way back and we re right there, and then we just can t quite get there and lose by 10 or 12 because we have to foul. At that point when we get right there, we need someone who can step up and make the big shot. We need to not break down defensively and stay within the team defense and find people (shooters). There were strong performances, like junior Rachele Kloke s first career double-double, freshman Jessica Graham s career-high five blocks, and the team s season-high.467 (7-15) performance from 3- point range, but inconsistencies still remained for the Vandal women. Leading 12-8 at the 12:43 mark and playing well, Idaho hit a wall. After a Bianca Cheever 3-pointer, Idaho turned it over 10 times in its next 18 possessions in the ensuing 10 minutes. In the meantime, Long Beach State steadily expanded its advantage into a 29-15 lead with 2:17 remaining in the first half. Team Notes Junior Rachele Kloke, Idaho s leading scorer this year at 12.6 points per game, had a solid weekend at the World Vision Classic Nov. 27-29, as she averaged 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds while hitting 46.4 percent from the field. She was rewarded with a spot on the World Vision Classic All-Star Team at the conclusion of the tournament. Sophomore guard Shaena Kuehu has only played in 40 games in her Idaho career, but she s already poised to crack the top-10 list for career 3-point field goals made. Kuehu has nailed 59 long-range shots during her career, 18 so far this season, and needs just five more to overtake Meg LeBlanc (1998-02) for 10th all-time. Junior guard Rachele Kloke needs just 22 points to hit 500 for her career. The third-year player leads the team with 12.6 points per game and is tied for the WAC lead with eight consecutive double-digit scoring games. Senior Charlotte Otero s consecutive minutes played streak ended on Nov. 22 against Montana State at 825:34. She hadn t sat on the bench since the 3:00 mark in the second half at Portland on Dec. 28, 2008. Her minutes played streak crossed two seasons and 21 games. Junior guard Bianca Cheever scored 15 points in her Idaho debut against Gonzaga. Her 13 3-point field goal attempts in that game are the second-most in Memorial Gym history, while her five made 3-pointers are tied as the seventh-most. Last year, Yinka Olorunnife set a school record with 310 rebounds and an 11.1 average, but only three players on the team averaged at least 5.0 rebounds. This season, four Vandals, Olorunnife, Rachele Kloke, Shaena Kuehu and Jessica Graham, are averaging at least 5.0, while one more, Bianca Cheever, averages 4.8 per game for the year. With her second assist of the game at the 12:39 mark of the first half against Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 29, senior point guard Charlotte Otero dished her 300th career assist. With its 90 points and 55 second-half points against Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 29, Idaho had its highest singlegame points total and highest single-half points total since a 99-70 win at Utah Valley on Dec. 8, 2005. With 314 career assists, Otero is the WAC s career leader in that category. She currently ranks eighth in Idaho history in career assists, and needs 17 more to overtake Robin Behrens (1982-86) for seventh. With 52 rebounds so far this year, junior Yinka Olorunnife has pushed her career rebounding total to 581 and moved into eighth all-time in Idaho history. She needs 48 more to overtake Darci Pemberton (1998-02) for seventh all-time. Yinka Olorunnife saw three career streaks snap on Nov. 22 against Montana State. First, she failed to score a point for the first time in her career - a span of 56 games. She also came up short of five rebounds, which broke a streak of 31 consecutive games with at least five boards. Her streak of 55 consecutive starts also ended. Idaho was picked to finish fourth in both the preseason media and coaches WAC polls, which equals Idaho s previous best preseason ranking. The Vandals were picked to finish fourth in 2005-06, the team s first year in the conference. With an average height of 5 feet, 9.6 inches, Idaho boasts its tallest lineup since 2002-03, when the team averaged 5 feet, 11.1 inches. Idaho took a hit before the season even got started, as 2008-09 leading scorer and WAC Newcomer of the Year Derisa Taleni sustained a knee injury during preseason practices. She will redshirt the 2009-10 season and return for the Vandals in 2010-11. Idaho s 54-51 overtime loss at Eastern Washington was the team s fourth consecutive loss in extra time. The last time the Vandals won an overtime game was Jan. 19, 2008, when they beat Utah State 70-64 at the Cowan Spectrum.
