arnold palmer bio Arnold Palmer is many things to many people...world famous golf immortal and sportsman, highly-successful business executive, prominent advertising spokesman, skilled aviator, talented golf course designer and consultant, devoted family patriarch and a man with a down-to-earth common touch that has made him one of the most popular and accessible public figures in history. Palmer was born on September 10, 1929, in Latrobe, a small industrial town in Western Pennsylvania at the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains some 50 miles east of Pittsburgh. His saga began when he was four years old, swinging his first set of golf clubs, cut down by his father, Milfred J. (Deacon) Palmer, who worked at Latrobe Country Club from 1921 until his death in 1976, much of that time as both golf professional and course superintendent. Before long, Arnie was playing well enough to beat the older caddies at the club. He began caddying himself when he was 11 and worked at almost every job at the club in later years. After a successful high school career, Arnold came to Wake Forest University, where he quickly became No. 1 man on the golf team and one of the leading collegiate players of that time. He captured both the 1949 and 1950 Southern Conference and NCAA individual titles and led his team to three Southern Conference championships. He also won the 1954 inaugural ACC Championship. After turning pro in 1955, Arnold went on to become one of the greatest players in golf history. His accolades include 92 professional wins including 62 career PGA Tour victories and 7 major championships. He was a member of 7 Ryder Cup teams, serving as Captain twice, and holds the record for most consecutive appearances in The Masters with 50 straight appearances, winning four green jackets. The golfing great has been the recipient of countless honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009. He has received virtually every national award in golf and after his great 1960 season, he was named both the Hickok Professional Athlete of the Year and Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. Arnold now maintains an active business schedule with golf course design, construction and development along with a variety of other ventures. He and his wife, Kathleen (Kit) Gawthrop, spend the warmer months of the year in Latrobe, but during the fall and winter they reside at their homes at Bay Hill and at the Tradition Golf Club in La Quinta, California.

history of the wake forest golf pro-am The first Wake Forest Golf Pro-Am was held in September of 1978, Homecoming Weekend, at Old Town Club, in Winston-Salem. The Pro-Am began as a way for Wake Forest golfers to give back and help raise funds to support the golf program. Since 1978, with a few exceptions, the Pro-Am has been an annual event, and has brought some of the biggest names in golf back to Wake Forest. Pros such as Arnold Palmer, Jay Haas, Curtis Strange, Lanny Wadkins, Len Mattiace, Leonard Thompson, Bob Goalby, Joe Inman, Jay Sigel, Scott Hoch, Billy Andrade, and Gary Hallberg have regularly been a part of this popular event. For the first 20 years, almost all of the pros were on the regular PGA tour, but today our professional touring pros represent four different tours: LPGA, PGA, Nationwide and Champions, exhibiting the diversity and wider range of golf today. Over the years, the Pro-Am has generated thousands of dollars to help cover the costs of day to day operations for the golf program and assist with facility maintenance and enhancements, making this event a vital part of our fundraising efforts. Wake Forest Athletics and the men s and women s golf programs would like to thank all of the professionals and amateurs who have so generously supported this special event throughout the years. Wake Forest Golf is honored to welcome back the following professionals participating in the 2011 Wake Forest Golf Pro-Am. We are grateful for your continuing support. billy andrade laura diaz bill haas jay haas gary hallberg morris hatalsky scott hoch john maginnes arnold palmer chris paul kyle reifers jay sigel webb simpson stan utley

about the arnold palmer golf complex Wake Forest boasts one of the elite on-campus golf practice facilities in the country. The newly redesigned complex, which was completed in the spring of 2010, features the Jesse I. Haddock Golf Center and the Dianne Dailey Golf Learning Center. The complex features over 17 acres of 419 Tif Bermuda grass, five chipping and putting greens and 24 practice bunkers, designed by Arnold Palmer and his design team. Practice tees are situated around the entire complex to allow players to hit in any direction. The 3,500 square foot Dianne Dailey Golf Learning Center is equipped with the latest, state-of-the-art technology and has been highly regarded as one of the best training facilities on the East Coast, if not in the country. It is named for Dianne Dailey, who is in her 24th year as Head Coach for the women s golf team. Since taking over the program in 1988, she has led the women s golf team to 4 ACC titles. The Learning Center has five heated hitting bays and features a state-of-the-art V1 filming system and the newest TrackMan technology. The Learning Center also includes an indoor putting room that utilizes the Tomi video system, as well as a club repair and a club storage room. The Jesse I. Haddock Golf Center was dedicated on the Wake Forest campus in October of 1988 and is named after the legendary coach who put Demon Deacon golf on the map. In a 30-year coaching career from 1962-92, Haddock led the Deacons to three national titles (1974, 1975, 1986) and 15 ACC titles. The Haddock Center serves as the headquarters of the Wake Forest men's golf program and features three enclosed hitting bays, the Lanny Wadkins Players' Lounge, and offices for the coaching staff. Future plans for the Arnold Palmer Golf Complex include the construction of a golf house designed to provide a true home for the Wake Forest men s and women s golf teams. The new facility will serve as the gateway to the overall complex, showcasing the history and tradition of the storied golf program, and will house a variety of amenities that have not been previously available to our deserving student-athletes & coaches such as locker rooms and meeting spaces.
