The Online Newsletter of the Long Island Road Runners Club APRIL 2017 Somewhere, someone in the world is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win. Tom Fleming 1951-2017 President s Message This is an exciting time for runners on Long Island as the running events become more numerous and the weather cooperates to get you moving. The Long Island Road Runners just finished our Spring Opener, the Easter Bunny 5K on a gorgeous Sunday that has yet to be beat! 159 finishers enjoyed our classic run followed by coffee and bagels and the famous LIRRC camaraderie that is unmatched! We thank all the runners for their great show of support for our club. Fred Haslett and Gary Westerfield designed a 5K course just in time for that race, and we thank them for their work. We will continue to work hard behind the scenes to iron out the rough spots and present the best Wednesday Night Series in years, beginning on Flag Day, June 14 th at beautiful Eisenhower Park. We invite you to share the excitement and fun by joining our club! A 2017 application is on our website, or you can join before any Wednesday Night race. It s the best deal in town! In the coming weeks, a volunteer committee will be reaching out to those who have indicated an interest in volunteering for our races, and anyone who cares to help can meet us at the shed any time after 5PM for our Wednesday Night runs. A sure sign of spring, Mike Ogazon and Jim Thornton are resuming the Ribbon Runs on Wednesday, April 26 th starting at 5:30 (you can be late and join the pack). Meet the group in the Golf Course parking lot. The Long Island Festival of Races is only 2 weeks away! Join us in Eisenhower at Field 3 for some refreshments as we cheer our runners on! Throughout the season, our Men s and Women s Race Teams engage in specific LITF races in friendly competition. Details on how you can get involved are in this newsletter. I look forward to seeing you all as we kickoff a great season! Jim Ferguson Newsletter 1

The Ribbon Runs are back! Join Mike Ogazon and Jim Thornton on Wednesday Nights starting April 26 th at the Golf Course parking lot. The group meets at 5:30, but you can catch up with a run in progress if you are late. The Long Island Road Runners Mourn the passing Of Margaret DeMasters Mother of Drew DeMasters Grandmother of Andrew DeMasters A Memorial service will be held on May 3, 2017 at 8PM At St. Brigid s Church 75 Post Avenue Westbury, NY Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS Throughout our country s history, there have been selfless people who have stepped up to answer America s call. Let us not forget our men and women in uniform, and let us always let them know that they are appreciated for the sacrifices they and their families make for us. What can we do to show support for our men and women in uniform? There are many ways. Each week at our races, we had a collection box available to collect old cell phones. Our soldiers calls home are not free from anywhere in the world, especially those who are oversees. They can pay as much as $5 per minute to call loved ones. Our ongoing collection helps them stay in touch with loved ones. Let s do our part. God Bless our troops! The story of the two youths who started this program is inspiring. For more information, visit the Cell Phones for Soldiers website at http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/ Next up... Long Island Marathon Weekend May 5th 7 th LIRRC will be in Parking Field #3, where Public Security is located. Parking is limited, so if you are shut out, park in surrounding areas. See you there! OPENING NIGHT - WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES FLAG DAY JUNE 14 TH, 2017 KIDS RACE @ 6:30 5K AT 7PM. Pre-register with the application on page 9! Newsletter 2

2017 LIRRC Race Teams One of the major changes in 2016 was the revitalization of our race teams. We were always competitive, but Bill Schroeder, Dave Frisone, and Marie Brewer have made it their business to promote and increase our participation by signing up more Race Team members, making us real contenders. Race Team members score points for the club by running key races designated by LITF, known as the 2017 Grand Prix Races. In 2017 our commitment continues to grow and we expect a great year! The schedule for these races is on Page 8. You do not have to run every race, and regardless of ability, you can help our teams! The competition is friendly, and it s a great way to challenge yourself and run with your fellow club members. Of course, with everything, there is paperwork. Joining the race team requires joining LITF and designating The Long Island Road Runners as your affiliation (#17). If you need help with this, please contact the captains. Their email addresses are as follows: BILL BILL_SCHROEDER@VERIZON.NET DAVE WE5RUN4FUN@AOL.COM MARIE MARIE9105@AOL.COM You are responsible to pay your race fees and complete a LIRRC Membership Form, and in 2017, RACE TEAM MEMBERS MUST PAY MEMBERSHIP DUES. ONCE YOU RUN THREE RACES FOR THE TEAM, YOUR DUES WILL BE REFUNDED. 2017 is the second year that there has been a big push to make our Race Teams stand out. Be a part of the exciting changes in our club by joining us today! Contact Bill, Dave, or Marie for more information. Race Team members will score points towards the Spirit of the Duck awards a LIRRC club contest which is separate from the Grand Prix competition between the race teams. Please contact your Race Captain to get an updated scoring sheets, so you can see our team results as the season unfolds. The Grand Prix results are listed on the LITF web site and are updated after each event. The URL for that site is: Longisland.usatf.org. If you join our race team, please attend the races and score some points for LIRRC! Your participation is what will keep us competitive! IT S NEVER TOO LATE TO JOIN OUR RACE TEAM! THE COMPETITION IS ONGOING, AND YOU WILL SCORE POINTS RIGHT AWAY WITH YOUR FIRST RACE AS A MEMBER! Tom Fleming The running world lost a legend on April 19 th when Tom Fleming suffered a heart attack while coaching a meet at Verona, New Jersey. He was a coach for the Montclair Kimberley Academy. Fleming won the New York City Marathon in 1973 and 1975. The New York Road Runners, who put on the city's 26.2-mile event, called Fleming "an iconic figure" in the race's history. Fleming finished second twice at the Boston Marathon and also won marathons in Cleveland, Washington D.C., Toronto and Los Angeles. I was fortunate enough to be present when he was inducted into the Distance Running hall of Fame in Utica in 2014. A real gentleman, he was in awe of being in the presence of other elite runners although his accomplishments were extraordinary. He will be missed. Jim Ferguson Newsletter 6
