Dear Digest Readers, TODAY S RACING DIGEST: Del Mar August 19, 2015 www.todaysracingdigest.com For those of you who might have missed it, we are producing Digests for every track in the country. You can buy the Data Lines for every race from Assiniboia Downs to Zia Park. And, we do complete Digests for the major meetings: Saratoga, Gulfstream Park, Belmont, Aqueduct, Keeneland and Churchill Downs. We ve added the Monmouth summer meeting, too. All of these editions are available for download and we continue to publish hard copy for Southern and Northern California. If you are in Las Vegas and aren t getting the Digest delivered to your race book, contact your race book manager and ask for them to begin carrying the Digest for you. issue. Our goal is to help you make informed betting decisions on a daily basis and strive to offer a handicapping lesson in every FAQ What is Today s Racing Digest? For over 40 years Today s Racing Digest has specialized in California racing, producing handicapping information in both a Southern and Northern California issue in print and on-line at www.todaysracingdigest.com. Today s Racing Digest has, and always will be, dedicated to the survival of the horseplayer. What makes Today s Racing Digest different from other racing publications? The Digest offers many features that cannot be found in other horseracing publications. Features such as track bias, Pace Ratings, which measure early speed, and a paper race called the Fractional Charting which compares each horse in today s race based on a representative past performance. A page dedicated entirely to workout analysis has always been a popular feature, along with Hot & Cold trainer reports, a Claim Box report for owners and trainers, and our Better-Than-Looked List, which highlights horses exiting troubled or exceptional performances. What are Data Lines? A horse s Data Lines can be found under the name of each horse on the race page. Often called running lines and past performances, the Digest s Data Lines are unique in that the times for each race are adjusted to today s distance, taking into account track pars and the track variant (the speed of the track). This allows for an accurate and easier comparison when horses are coming together after racing at different distances and/or surfaces. Also listed in the Data Lines are the conditions of the horse s previous races, jockeys, track, track condition, finish position, track bias and morning line (ML) and actual odds (A). Does the Digest offer performance ratings or speed figures? Today s Racing Digest prides itself in offering numerous performance figures for the handicapper. Pace and Final Time Ratings can be found at the end of each Data Line and are the most popular. The Pace Rating measures early speed, while the Final Time Rating assigns a figure for the final time. The Digest also offers the CPR (Comprehensive Performance Rating) and FIRE Number, ratings which take into account each time recorded in the race and put it all together in one number. Noted handicapper/writer Tim Osterman also contributes the Fast Figs, which are a speed and class figure all in one. Where can I find a copy of Today s Racing Digest? Today s Racing Digest can be purchased at every major track in California, as well as major satellite facilities. The Digest is also sold at selected retail outlets throughout the state, and is usually available 24 hours before first post. For a location nearest you or for the number of your local distributor, please call (760) 603-8800. The Digest, along with a stable full of simulcast handicapping information, can also be purchased on-line at www.todaysracingdigest.com. On our website you can purchase all issues of Today s Racing Digest for tracks across the country at a discount in price and selections from our stable of handicappers. There are also numerous free areas, such as the Daily Money Plays, Feature Races, and Week In Review, which provides commentary on all the previous week s races. Give it a look. We think you ll like what you see. DEL MAR FRACTIONAL TIME COMPARISONS Shown below is the order of finish that would be likely if each horse repeated a representative race. There are many reasons why this may not happen. Foremost of these is that, like humans, horses have good and bad days. Also, today's race may differ from the representative race due to changes in the post position, weight carried, class, track, surface, pace characteristics etc. Nevertheless, plotting and studying times from previous performances is a basic part of handicapping. If the representative race was not on a normal track, the times shown have been adjusted by the track variant applicable. The underlined fractions indicate the leader(s) at that particular point in the race. Except for the LF = Last Fraction, which indicates the fastest closer(s). X = No recent or available time at or about the distance. The date of the selected, representative race is shown followed by a number indicating how many races back it was. Heir of Storm 08/13 DMR/FM 4F 48.4h Owns a win over the course @ this distance so this maintenance ½ mile maneuver is redundant to say he appears very comfortable over the local lawn. Forest Chatter 08/11 DMR/FT 4F 50.0h Solo move that was average @ best but in his defense he wasn't asked for much. Boat Trip 08/13 DMR/FT 4F 48.8h Best of team in easy ½ mile drill in company w/ stablemate, Two Ten. Baze stays aboard & figures for a piece of the minor awards. The Fox Said What 08/13 DMR/FT 5F 102.8hG Was trounced by a Headley trainee on the comeback trail, Circle the Moon out of the gate in mid range maneuver. Pyrotechnics 08/11 DMR/FT 4F 49.4h Proved best in team drill w/ recent winner China Girl Lover who received a major trainer upgrade from Carl O'Callaghan to Dan Hendricks. Exotics players may want to include this guy in your plans. Pleasure Point 08/12 DMR/FT 5F 102.2h Solo move that was disappointing @ best. Nothing positive to recommend. Maxticator 08/13 DMR/FT 5F 100.6h This drill was a decent time but looked horrible in the process. 3 straight double digits defeats say...no. Lucky Shoes to Win 08/12 DMR/FT 6F 113.6h Solid elongated move while finishing all square to Rockin Bayou after departing the 6 on equal terms. Improved effort could be in the mix @ a decent price. Aaron Again 08/14 DMR/FT 4F 48.6h Finished up heads up w/ grass performer Unusual Style while leaving a positive impression for this lowly bottom level clm event.

DEL MAR TIM OSTERMAN'S FAST FIGS has been producing performance figures for over 25 years and have most recently introduced our newest figure, the FIRE Number. However, there are other sources for such numbers and we are proud to now offer Tim Osterman's FAST FIGS. Osterman, a fixture in the California Handicapping scene for the last 20 years will provide a 'FAST FIG' for each horse. This rating is a combined class/performance figure based on the horse's overall effort and the strength and level of the fields faced. Horse's scoring within FIVE points of the top figures should be considered contenders in today's race. if a horse's rating is following by a (+) it means a horse may be ready to improve on today's figure. Generally, a plus (+) is potentially worth an additional FIVE points. Runners rated 'X' are either first-time starters, shippers from a new circuit, comebackers off more than four months or horses that simply could not be assigned a reliable rating. DEL MAR STEVE FIERRO S RACEDAY USA BETTING LINE Today s Racing Digest now features a betting line. A betting line is the second quarter of a complete handicapping/investing process. The betting line is applied following contender selection. This is outlined in Steve's book "The Four Quarters of Horse Investing". PLEASE READ THE ITEMS LISTED BELOW The betting line is simple and easy to use. It is designed to point out the value opportunities in a race. Here are the recommendations or "best way" to use the betting line: 1. The top contender is offered at odds higher than listed on the betting line (overlayed). This is the strongest feature of the betting line. 2. If two contenders are overlayed, start at the top. The contender listed closest to the top is the play. If the two are above 8/1, play them both. 3. If three contenders are overlayed the race is a pass. The race is chaos and long term this is a losing situation. 4. Legitimate favorites: If the betting line lists the top contender at 3/2 or less and the betting public sends this contender to post at 3/2 or less, this race must also be passed. This is a strong contender. The other contenders become "false overlays" because of the heavy action on the "legitimate" favorite. They do win, but long term they pay far too little to produce a profit. Exotics: The betting line is a "win oriented" service. It is an excellent tool in constructing doubles, Pick 3's, and 4's, from a value standpoint. DEL MAR - August 19 th, 2015 1 st race Lexie Arleen 2/1 Smooth Talker 5/2 Warrensdollarsigns 7/2 Lexie Arleen was claimed from her last start. The new connections have an excellent opportunity to head right to the profit plus category with the win. 2 nd race Analysis Paralysis 2/1 Bella Sierra 5/2 Cadet Roni 9/2 Analysis Paralysis is an early projection play on the card. I look for her to improve with the move to this high-end maiden claimer. 3 rd race Follow Me Crev 2/1 Wicked Finance 3/1 Image of Joplin 7/2 This turf Marathon is interesting. You have to go back to April to find a win from the seven entrants. Let s see if Follow Me Crev can get to the wire first. 4 th race War Destiny 2/1 Heavenly Haze 3/1 Prodigious 7/2 Sadler went to the maiden claiming basement with War Destiny last time out. The just hung on for the win. This is a logical spot for the first start versus winners. 5/2 and up will do. 5 th race Big Move 9/5 Q Viva 3/1 Redo It 4/1 Big Move is stretching out on the turf off a short layoff. I don t think she needs the lead to hit the wire first. Fair odds may be a real challenge. 6 th race Sugar Buzz 5/2 Unbridled Rocket 5/2 Frac Candy 3/1 Three runners are close together on the betting line in this one. I am partial to the debuting Sugar Buzz from the Dollase barn. 3/1 and up will do. 7 th race Forest Chatter 2/1 Distinctiv Passion 5/2 Heir of Storm 4/1 There is plenty of early speed signed up for this featured race. If Forest Chatter runs his race he should run them all down before the wire. 8 th race Aaron Again 2/1 Santiago s Home 3/1 Wild 7/2 Let s close out the card with Aaron Again. He was 7/1 in his last race. I am thinking a price in the 3/1 range will be offered today. Steve Fierro has been involved in horseracing since 1978. 1n 1998 he started the RACEDAYUSA betting line service. Steve is the host of ESPNS EVERYBODY S RACING. This is a Reno based radio show all about the Sport Of Kings. He also promotes racing for the Northern Nevada horseplayer with educational seminars and programs. Smooth Talker beat a couple of these when easily winning an $8,000 claimer July 23. She figures to attract plenty of attention off that win over the track, and she would hardly be a surprise, but her form prior to that win wasn t great, so she s probably beatable if her odds are too low to play. Lexie Arleen finished 2nd behind Smooth Talker in that $8,000 claimer July 23. She d won two straight in No Cal against this kind prior to that, and her new trainer has a good record first off the claim. She may have a chance to turn the tables. No Tricks For Jack was claimed by Diodoro off a poor outing with $16,000 claimers July 16. That effort has to concern, but she d probably win if she could duplicate her winning effort against $12,500 Starter Handicap foes June 25. She s bounce back from poor efforts recently before, and her good race/bad race pattern has her sitting on another good race if the pattern holds. Sallyana ships down from No Cal where she beat (via the Dq) $8,000 claimers July 4 and was 4 th with RACE APPRAISAL HORSE COMMENTS Smil'n From Above finished in the money in four straight at and around this level, but hasn t run well in two starts with $8,000 claimers here at Del Mar since. She s 1-for-32 in dirt sprints and doesn t appear to like this track. Smooth Talker easily beat $8,000 claimers, including a few of these, July 23. She was dropping from the restricted $16,000 ranks and it looks like she should fit Ok at this level. That last win charts well, too, so we ll count her a threat. Sallyana was claimed by Thomas off a 2nd with $8,000 claimers at Pleasanton July 4, and then ran decently when stepped up to face $20,000 claimers routing at Sacramento July 24. She struggled the last two times she raced in So Cal, but that was with tougher. She looks like a threat at this level, and her odds should be decent given her low profile connections. No Tricks for Jack beat tougher $12,500 Starter Handicap types June 25, but then finished up the track with $16,000 claimers when claimed by Smil'n From Above ( M.Polanco/M.Perez = ) 7M - Unbridled Energy(10%T,10%S,12%M) - With a Song by With Approval LAST 15: (0.0%) 15 0-4-1 DIRT SPR: (0.0%) 52 0-10-6 UP: (0.0%) 20 0-4-1 $20,000 routers July 24. She has speed, and the winner of that $20,000 claimer at Sacramento came back to win her next start as well. She could be sneaky dangerous, although she did run 3 rd to Lexie Arleen at this level three back. Finally, Warrensdollarsigns just missed with $16,000 non-winners of two, but was awarded the win by the stewards Aug 8. Knapp got his second win of the meet in a cheap claiming race on Sunday, so this gal isn t without a look at this level. In the end, Smooth Talker might be the obvious play, but we re going to look for some value. We ll make No Tricks For Jack the HF 15a and hope that last race was just a hiccup. Our longshot is Sallyana, although it wouldn t be too surprising to see the betting spread pretty evenly in this heat. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Smooth Talker :31.2 - Warrensdollarsigns :31.3 - Lexie Arleen :31.7 Diodoro (from Miller) July 16. That last effort concerns, but she has been a good race/bad race pattern, so she could be sitting on a good one if that pattern continues. Warrensdollarsigns finished 2nd and was moved up to 1st via the Dq when facing $16,000 non-winners of two Aug 8. She s in decent form and might fit Ok with this kind. Her low-profile barn won the last race on Sunday, also a cheap claiming race. Lexie Arleen beat this kind in two straight in No Cal before running 2nd behind Smooth Talker when claimed by Freeman (from Miranda) for $8,000 July 23. She s sharp, and her new barn has a solid record first off the claim, so she appears to merit contender status. Norastone crushed restricted $8,000 claimers June 26 before running 3rd with open $8,000 claimers in that race won by Smooth Talker July 23. SECOND RACE - DEL MAR ANALYSIS: In this Maiden-Claimer two horses have really caught our eye. Cadet Roni ran poorly in a turf route with straight Maidens July 25, but was competitive with that kind in her last two dirt sprints. She wins the paper race and should be dangerous dropping to this level and return to a dirt sprint. Bella Sierra was dismissed at long odds in her debut, but showed some speed and finished a decent 4 th with Cal-bred straight Maidens May 23. The interesting part is that race has produced four nextout winners, including the horses that finished 1 st and 3 rd. She ll add blinkers and might offer good value at the windows given her modest connections. We ll make both HF 15a s as Cadet Roni is the most-likely Distance: 6 Furlongs Race Level: Base 115 Race Cond: MCL 50 Conditions: MAIDEN CLAIMING FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE Purse: $36,000 YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. She ll add blinkers and is facing open $50,000 Maiden- Claimers today, but that last heat has produced four next-out winners, including the winner and the 3rd-place finisher. She rates attention and her odds could stay high. Appealing Lady has not raced since a distant 4th with $75,000 nonwinners routing Oct 23. She moves from Sadler to Eurton, has the blinkers worn for her last start removed and has worked 10 times since June 10. She could be a threat on her past form, but her new barn has been kind of cold at the meet (1-for-35). In this field, we still might give her a look in the exotics. Seaward Cottage ran last debuting with straight Maidens July 16. The drop in class might help, but that first effort was pretty bad. Holiday Starlet ran poorly in her debut when beating only neighbor Seaward Cottage in that straight Maiden heat July 16. Like that one, she Bella Sierra ( J.Sierra/E.Maldonado = 2 0-0-0 ) 3F - Council Member(16%T,7%S,23%M) - Bigtimeaffair by Arch winner, while Bella Sierra is probably the value play. Appealing Lady and Analysis Paralysis are both coming off layoffs, but at least rate a look on the track and on the tote board. Appealing Lady is now in a chilly barn, but her form against tougher last year for Sadler was pretty solid. Analysis Paralysis ran just Ok in a couple of races against straight Maidens last year, but her trainer has a good record with comebackers, and the softer competition can t hurt. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Carbon Beach :25.2 - Cadet Roni :26.2 - Analysis Paralysis, Bella Sierra :26.6 might improve with racing and the drop in class, but she s tough to like off that first effort. Lynn's Chancie finished a distant 3rd debuting with $40,000 Maiden- Claimers July 24. She ll add blinkers, but the slight jump in class seems unwarranted. Cadet Roni ran decently with tougher straight Maidens sprinting May 24 and June 20, but then ran poorly when tried in a turf route with that kind July 25. She ll add blinkers and might rebound in a big way with the drop in class and return to sprinting. The paper race winner deserves a long look. Carbon Beach finished a distant 3rd debuting with much softer $20,000 Maiden-Claimers June 27. She d be a surprise at this level. Analysis Paralysis hasn t raced since running last with straight Maidens in a synthetic route Nov 21. She s worked 14 times since May 13 and her barn is pretty good with comebackers. Tote and post parade checks couldn t hurt.
