Audi Dome, Munich Progress is built on ideas.
The FC Bayern Munich basketball team s move into the Audi Dome gave them a beautiful new home after their promotion. 2
Back to the roots: The striking circular building with its characteristic aluminium facade is now used as a basketball arena. No other sports venue in Munich combines times past and things to come in such a wonderful manner. There are still unique buildings in Munich that were built for the 1972 Olympics. The Olympiapark and the stadium, the hall and the Olympia-Turm (tower), for example. And in the Bavarian capital s Sendling district a representative multifunctional hall was built that hosted the Olympic basketball competition. The Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle s circular building permeated by rectangular annexe had been planned by Georg Flinkenbusch and is of an impressive shape. What s striking about it is that the circular aluminium facade tapers off to the top to become a free-standing roof structure declining towards the centre. Prior to its closure in 2003, the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle was a frequent venue of very popular sports events, both national and international, and of rock and pop concerts. Six years later, an integrated concept of restaurants and pubs etc., sports and events failed for financial reasons. Only in 2011 did the FC Bayern Munich basketball team see its promotion and the hall Max Bögl s complex modernisation. 3
This renovation posed a huge challenge to the Max Bögl Group, and that challenge was how to balance the traditional and the modern aspects of the project, which, after all, had to provide utmost comfort and safety, a modern design and a multifunctional use. At the same time, it also had to be in line with the very specific character of this time-honoured sports venue and to convey into the future the Olympic spirit of times past. The Max Bögl Group realised this project in a short time frame, from May to September 2011, to be precise, thereby making the FC Bayern Munich basketball team and the new eponymic sponsor Audi s vision become real. It took Max Bögl only five months to realise the FC Bayern Munich and Audi s vision. 4
The Audi Dome is of a convincing architecture wearing historical clothes. These five months saw all the planning, asking for permits and the renovation work run concurrently. The entire HVAC etc. had to be modernised, without breaking with the past. This was also the premise for the gutting of the spectators colonnade and equipping it with a number of stalls, fan shops and presentation areas. Otl Aicher s master control system was kept or upgraded. The old claustrophobia-inducing wooden roof structure was also removed for fire protection reasons. The newly created, lavish VIP area with its exclusive F&B provided by Michael Käfer has a retro look and is very inviting indeed. Up to 6,700 spectators can watch their teams from new seats on two telescope stands that were left in place, or from an entirely new seated front stand and from a standing stand. And there is the high-quality PA and lighting system plus four huge projectors and projection screens. The new, continuous LED perimeter advertising is very impressive and also removable. 5
Relax in an exclusive atmosphere in the newly designed VIP lounge in its 1970s retro look. In order to allow the press to report on the home matches of the first division FC Bayern Munich basketball team, a new press area was built into the former restaurant. Equipped with all the press might need with regard to the latest technical stuff, from here they can broadcast to the world what s going on in the hall. But not only journalists are supposed to feel good in here, the players should do so, too. So the entire players area was upgraded. New rooms for the player, a gym, doctors consulting rooms, physiotherapy rooms, a warm- ing-up hall and offices for the coach and aides round off this wholly successful modernisation package. Incidentally, they also accommodate other FC Bayern Munich basketball teams when free. 6
When turning the Rudi- Sedlmayer-Halle into the Audi Dome, the Max Bögl Group benefited from its many years of experience in the planning, construction and renovation of sports venues all over the world. When completed in September 2011, the new basketball hall did not only become one of the best renovated buildings of that sort others would include the BayArena in Leverkusen or the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne it also ushered in the FC Bayern Munich s basketball team s success. In the former restaurant, the press will find everything they need in this information age. 7
