The Tournament The Cardwell Barra Bonanza is a two day sports fishing competition held annually at the end of October to coincide with the close of the Barra season. Fishing the waters off Hinchinbrook Island captured Barra are measured and released whilst Mangrove Jack, Javelin & Threadfin Salmon are weighed. The opportunity to visit picturesque Cardwell as well as great prizes and affordable nomination fees make this a competition that appeals to anglers from Cairns to the coal mines!! Launched seven years ago to assist in attracting visitors to Cardwell at a traditionally quiet time of the year, the competition was planned to coincide with the opening of the Barra season, the first weekend in February. Torrential rain, flooded roads and the threat of cyclones played havoc with the first 3 events. In 2011, just 24 hours before the comp was due to get underway Cyclone Yasi blew in taking with it the contents of the clubhouse venue, and the $20,000 prize pool. Down, but not out and against all the odds, the Club rebuilt and in the process rescheduled the event to its current time slot and never looked back. Numbers soared and for the first time nominations nudged the magic 100 mark. The event in 2012 exceeded the Club's wildest dreams when competitor numbers reached 164. In 2015 the Cardwell Sportfishing Club will be staging the 8 th much-anticipated Cardwell Barra Bonanza. Expected to attract more than 300 visitors to Cardwell, the town's economy will receive a much needed shot in the arm. Locals are encouraged to come along and enjoy the finale of the weekend - live entertainment following the Presentation of trophies. 2 P a g e

Background to the Cardwell Sportfishing Club Cardwell Sportfishing Club Inc, (CSC) formed in 1967, was a founding member of the Australian National Sportfishing Association (ANSA) an Australia wide organisation dedicated to the sustainability and conservation of fisheries management, while providing a family oriented base for leisure and lifestyle. Also established in 1967, ANSA was based in Cardwell and Cairns. Three years later, in 1970, the Queensland Branch was formed and the Cardwell Sportfishing Club featured prominently in formulating the guidelines and creed that all clubs in Qld and throughout Australia still follow - and as our local population has never exceeded 1500, we pride ourselves in being the oldest sporting club in Cardwell while continuing to be an active and important component of ANSA. For the last 45 years, our motto has been Sport, Conservation, Integrity whereby the sport of fishing fostered integrity and honour, while encompassing the important aspect of conservation of the sport we hope to pass onto future generations. We have done this through working with fisheries management with self-imposed bag limits, legal lengths and a tagging program that is held in the highest esteem by fisheries managers and biologists, researchers, development programmers and junior development officers. The driving force behind the Cardwell Sportfishing Club and ANSA in the formative years (and many many years hence) is Cardwell resident, Mr Vic McCristal. As a revered figure among the fishing fraternity, Vic is also a writer of books that have attracted anglers from all over the world to visit Cardwell to take advantage of the natural fishing environment and our local beauty. In 1986 he was awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution to Sportfishing. The late Eric Moller, another of the founding members of Cardwell Sportfishing Club, was the first life member of ANSA. The Eric Moller Award is the most prestigious award bestowed on an individual by ANSA Queensland for dedication to fishing within the ANSA ethics and fostering the ANSA ideals. Four of our members have received the ANSA Qld Eric Moller award. Three members have been granted Life Membership of Qld branch of ANSA a rare honour indeed. Cardwell Sportfishing Club Inc also has three past Presidents of ANSA Qld. They are: Vic McCristal (dec.) who also became the National President Marina Hoare Jeff Snell 7 P a g e
CSC is a member club of the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA), enabling its members to fish competitively in all arenas but more importantly allows us to invite members of these associations to our area for competitions and social functions and claim records in IGFA classes. CSC is one of very few fishing Clubs in Australia which has its own clubhouse, leased from the Cassowary Coast Regional Council. This building also houses the History of ANSA memorabilia and we are proud that the organisation has entrusted us with their historical artifacts. CURRENT ACTIVITIES & contribution to Cardwell Community The club currently comprises 40 financial members (2014/15 membership), young & old, singles & families, sharing a common interest FISHING. Through participation, camaraderie, by promoting responsible angling, family values and, in particular, nurturing juniors, members adhere to the principles of our club motto, namely Sport, Conservation and Integrity, Intra-club fishing competitions, weigh-ins & BBQ s are held monthly, providing members with an avenue for family and social recreation. We are also committed to tag and release, participating in the tagging program that provides vital information of nursery habitat, fish movement, breeding pattern etc to researchers and fisheries management. This further assists researchers to make informed decisions of sustainable practices. Member benefits: Camaraderie, shared knowledge, fun nights and social events, great BBQ's and camping trips, informative talks at meetings, civil war with great State of Origin nights on the Big Screen & much more! Several of our members are trained Junior Development Officers through Sunfish Events and activities organised by CSC benefit the economy of the community by bringing visitors to Cardwell. To highlight our club s contribution to the Cardwell Community, Since 1970 the club has been hosting the annual North Queensland Championships, which is arguably the longest continually running fishing competition in Australia. 45 continuous years of attracting approximately 150 anglers each year to our small town is quite an achievement. For 34 consecutive years CSC held the annual Cardwell Challenge. In 2008, this event became the Cardwell Barra Bonanza, with a changed format. In future the event will be held on the last weekend in October just before the end of the Barramundi season. These events attract anglers and families from Mackay to Mossman and westward. 8 P a g e
