Mannarino is trying to become the first Frenchman to win the Tokyo title since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2009 while Goffin is attempting to become the first Belgian to win here. Goffin is appearing in the Tokyo final for the second straight year (l. to Kyrgios) and the 26-year-old Belgian comes in on an eight-match winning streak after earning his third career ATP World Tour title in Shenzhen last Sunday. Goffin has moved to No. 10 in the Emirates ATP Race to London standings and is 105 points ahead of Sam Querrey for the final spot. If he wins he will add 200 points and go past Pablo Carreno Busta into No. 8 in the Race (see chart). Goffin is playing in his fourth final this season (1-2) and the 10th ATP World Tour final in his career (3-6). Mannarino, who posted his biggest career win over No. 5 Marin Cilic in the semi-finals, is trying to capture his first ATP World Tour title. There have been seven first-time winners on the ATP World Tour this season. The last player to win his maiden ATP title in Tokyo was South African Wesley Moodie in 2005 (d. Ancic). He was also the last unseeded Tokyo champion. The last left-hander to win the Tokyo title was Rafael Nadal in 2010. This is Mannarino s second ATP final of the season after a runner-up showing in Antalya, Turkey on July 1 (l. to Sugita). Mannarino is 0-3 in ATP World Tour finals and prior to this year he was a finalist in 2015 Auckland and Bogota. Mannarino posted his third Top 10 win of the season over Cilic and equaled his career-best wins total (28) in 2015. In the lone doubles championship, the Japanese wild card duo of Ben Mclachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama take on No. 2 seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, who are 3-2 in finals this season. The Japanese squad upset top seeds and US Open champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in the quarter-finals en route to the final. This is Mclachlan s first ATP World Tour main draw while Uchiyama came in with one ATP match win, in 2014 Tokyo. The last Japanese duo to win an ATP World Tour doubles title was Satoshi Iwabuchi and Takao Suzuki in 2005 Tokyo. Raonic was a finalist in 2012-13-14 and Goffin last year. Sugita is trying to reach his first quarter-final in Tokyo. In the opening match on Colosseum, Alexandr Dolgopolov brings a 2-1 head-to-head record against Steve Johnson. The 28-year-old Ukrainian won both of last year s meetings and he s trying to reach the Tokyo quarter-finals for the first time since his 2013 debut. Johnson is coming off his career-best win over No. 7-ranked Dominic Thiem on Tuesday and he is looking to reach his first Tokyo quarter-final since his 2014 debut. In the next match on, 2007 finalist Richard Gasquet takes a 2-0 record against Yen-Hsun Lu, who has not won a set (0-4) in their two previous meetings. The Frenchman, who beat No. 6 seed Sam Querrey in the first round on Tuesday, is trying to reach his first Tokyo quarter-final since 2008 (SF). Lu is playing in the second round here for the fourth time and he s trying to advance to his first quarter-final. Last week he reached the quarter-finals in Chengdu, his best ATP World Tour result of the season. Lu is 23-5 on the ATP Challenger Tour with three titles in 2017. In the third match on, Aussie qualifier Matthew Ebden looks for his first win against Goffin, who won both previous meetings in straight sets. Ebden qualified into his sixth ATP World Tour level tournament of the season and in July he reached his first ATP World Tour singles final in Newport (l. to Isner) as a qualifier. He ranked a season-low No. 699 on Jan. 2 and has climbed to No. 139 this week. The 26-year-old Belgian is No. 13 in the Emirates ATP Race to London standings and 150 points behind Sam Querrey, who holds the final spot. He will move past Andy Murray for the No. 12 position if he reaches the quarter-finals. In the final match on, Raonic meets Sugita for the third time on the ATP World Tour. The Canadian leads 2-0 but both of his wins have come in three sets, including a first round match in Tokyo in 2011 when Raonic prevailed in a third set tie-break. Raonic is returning to the ATP World Tour after a seven-week absence after he underwent left wrist surgery in August. He comes in No. 12 in the Emirates ATP Rankings after starting the season at No. 3. Sugita won his first main draw match (1-5) in Tokyo on Tuesday over Benoit Paire who retired due to fatigue. The Japanese No. 2 is trying to earn his 20th win of the season (19-11) and advance to his fifth ATP World Tour quarterfinal in 2017.

RAKUTEN JAPAN OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW & DAY 1 MEDIA NOTES Monday, October 2, 2017 Ariake Tennis Forest Park Tokyo, Japan October 2-8, 2017 Draw: S-32, D-16 Prize Money: $1,563,795 Surface: Outdoor Hard ATP World Tour Info Tournament Info ATP PR & Marketing ATPWorldTour.com RakutenOpen.com Richard Evans: revans@atpworldtour.com Twitter: @ATPWorldTour @RakutenOpen Press Room: +81 3 3529 4960 Facebook: @ATPWorldTour @RakutenJapanOpen 10 THINGS TO WATCH IN TOKYO 1) The Race is On: With 500 points on the line at this week s Rakuten Japan Open, the Emirates ATP Race to London is heating up. Top 2 seeds Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem are on pace to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, while No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson and No. 6 seed Sam Querrey are battling near the cut. With Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic out for the season, Querrey would be the last London qualifier if the season ended today. Anderson trails Querrey by 100 points. 2) Cilic s Challenge: Cilic reached his second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon and broke into the Top 5 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on September 11. But the Croat is 7-8 on hard courts this season and 9-12 since defeating then-no. 1 Djokovic at ATP Masters 1000 Paris on November 4, 2016. 3) Early Exits: Only two men reached the second week at all four Grand Slam events in 2017: Thiem and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal. However, Thiem has suffered losses in his first or second match at 10 ATP World Tour events this season. He fell to Guido Pella in his opener at Chengdu last week. 4) Raonic s Return: No. 3 seed Milos Raonic is back on the ATP World Tour after undergoing left wrist surgery and missing seven weeks. The Canadian has not played in Tokyo since finishing as the runner-up in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Raonic lost a first-set tiebreaker 7-5 in all three finals. 5) Back in the Race: David Goffin was No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race to London when he injured his right ankle at Roland Garros on June 2. The Belgian missed six weeks and fell to No. 13, but he won his first title in three years on Sunday in Shenzhen. He trails Querrey by only 150 race points. 6) Comeback Kev: Since the start of 2016, Anderson has endured injuries to his ankle, elbow, groin, hip, knee and shoulder. He fell to No. 80 on January 16, 2017 and was No. 32 when he became the lowest-ranked US Open finalist in history. Anderson returned to the Top 15 on September 11. 7) Big Rivalry: The 6-foot-8 Anderson and 6-foot-6 Querrey have had one of the greatest rivalries of the season. Anderson avenged his five-set loss to Querrey at Wimbledon with wins at ATP Masters 1000 Montreal and the US Open. Their battle for a berth at the Nitto ATP Finals continues in Tokyo. 8) Size of the Heart: Before Anderson made history as the tallest Grand Slam finalist in the Open Era, 5-foot-7 Diego Schwartzman became the shortest Grand Slam quarter-finalist in 23 years. The No. 8 seed has posted a career-high 29 wins this season, including an upset of Cilic at the US Open. 9) Career Year: With Kei Nishikori injured, all eyes in Tokyo are on No. 2 Asian Yuichi Sugita. The 29-year-old Japanese player is enjoying a breakthrough season with his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final at Cincinnati and his maiden ATP World Tour semi-final, final and title at Antalya. 10) US Open Final Rematch: No. 1 doubles seeds Jean Julien-Rojer and Horia Tecau will play a US Open final rematch against Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez in the Tokyo first round. Rojer and Tecau earned their second Grand Slam title on September 8 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Spaniards.
