PITTSBURGH PIRATES (48-48) vs. COLORADO ROCKIES (56-41) JULY 21, 2017 at Coors Field, Denver, CO --- GAME #97/ROAD #47 RHP TREVOR WILLIAMS (3-4, 4.57 ERA) vs. RHP JEFF HOFFMAN (6-1, 4.33 ERA) THE PIRATES...have won a season-high five straight games, eight of their last nine and 11 of their last 13...Are at.500 for the first time since April 16 (6-6)...Have gone 22-13 in their last 35 games and 34-26 in their last 60, dating back to 5/13...Scored a season-high 14 runs in their final game before the break (7/9 at Chicago)...Had a 49-47 record after 96 games last season (50-47 after 97). ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH: The Pirates have won eight of their last nine games played in Colorado, dating back to 7/27/14... They posted a 3-1 record last year and swept a four-game series in 2015 between September 21-24...In their last nine games at Coors Field, the Bucs have hit.329 (116-for-353) with 22 doubles, 15 home runs and 69 runs scored (7.7 per game avg.). HEATING UP IN JULY: Since Clint Hurdle began managing the Pirates in 2011, the Bucs have posted the second-best record in all of baseball during the month of July...In the seven seasons, Pittsburgh s collective 101-69 (.594) record ranks second behind the Dodgers and their 99-63 (.611) mark during the month. WE RE GOING STREAKING: The Bucs have won each of their last five games, posting a 2.15 ERA (46.0ip/11er) and winning each game by one or two runs...the five-game winning streak is the club s longest of the season; the Pirates won a seasonhigh seven consecutive games last year between June 29 and July 6. COMEBACK KIDS: All five of Pittsburgh s victories during this five-game winning streak have been come-from-behind wins... The streak began Sunday against the Cardinals and continued with a four-game sweep of the Brewers...According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Pirates are the first team this season or last to win five straight games in comeback fashion, all against divisional opponents...the Bucs have only had one other stretch like this in the divisional era (since 1969): they won five straight games, all comebacks vs. divisional opponents, from August 10-14, 1991...The first three games were against the Cardinals and second two vs. the Phillies, all at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. STRIKING NUMBERS: Pittsburgh pitchers have struck out at least 10 batters in each of the last four games, including a season-high 15 in Wednesday s 10-inning victory vs. Milwaukee...If the staff can strike out 10 or more Colorado batters tonight, it would mark the first time in team history that the Bucco pitching staff had 10 or more Ks in five consecutive games during the same season; they did have a six-game streak spanning 2015 (last three games) and 2016 (first three games). ROAD TRIP STARTS TONIGHT: The Pirates begin a nine-game, 10-day road trip tonight with the first of three games in Colorado...The trip also includes three games in San Francisco and three in San Diego next weekend (off day Thursday)...The Bucs have won five of their last six games played on the road and have gone 9-5 in their last 14 while recording a 4-1-3 record in their last eight series played away from home since being swept in Los Angeles May 8-10. TAPPING INTO THE ROCKIES: In 11 career games at Coors Field, Starling Marte has gone 22-for-43 (.512) with three doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and a 1.283 OPS...He has produced three separate four-hit games in that time and went 13-for-20 during the four-game series played here in September 2015, tying the club record for most hits in a four-game series; a feat first accomplished by Hall-of-Famer Pie Traynor against the Phillies in 1928. INSIDE THE CENTRAL: Since play began on May 13, the Pirates own the best record among National League Central teams and the seventh-best in all of baseball...among N.L. Central teams, the Bucs have gone 34-26 in that time, followed by the Brewers (33-29), Cubs (31-28), Cardinals (27-34) and Reds (21-39). SERIES-LY SPEAKING: The Buccos have won four straight series and have gone 6-1-1 in their last eight. CATCHING FIRE: Franciso Cervelli delivered a game-tying single in the ninth inning Wednesday night and now has hits in each of his last five at bats (streak also includes one walk)...he enters today ranked third among N.L. catchers in OBP (.368). RAVING ABOUT RIVERO: Felipe Rivero has made nine straight scoreless outings (10.2ip) and has been scored upon just twice in his last 28 games (31.0ip/3r/2er) while being charged with an earned run in just four of his 48 appearances overall... He recorded his nine save of the season on Thursday and his fifth multi-innings save Monday night...the last Pirates pitcher to earn at least five saves of more than 1.0ip in a season was RHP Julian Tavarez, who had seven such saves in 2003. THE ARMS RACE: The Pirates have recorded a 2.67 ERA (145.0ip/43er) after their first 16 games played in July...The only team in the Majors to post a better team ERA so far this month is the Dodgers (2.32)...Pittsburgh s bullpen ranks first in the Major Leagues in ERA (1.64) in July while the starting staff ranks fourth (3.20). SAVING SOUTHPAWS: Lefty Felipe Rivero is one save shy of matching fellow southpaw Tony Watson with a team-high 10 saves this season...it would mark the first time in club history that the Pirates have had two left-handed pitchers earn 10 or more saves in the same season (since saves became official in 1969)...According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this has happened only three times in MLB history; John Rocker (24) and Mike Remlinger (12) with the Braves in 2000, Mitch Williams (16) and Paul Assenmacher (10) with the Cubs in 1990 and Dave Righetti (25) and Lee Guetterman (13) with the Yankees in 1989. STEADY AT SHORT: Since the start of the 2014 season, Jordy Mercer leads all National League shortstops in fielding percentage (.985) and ranks second to Brandon Crawford (502) with his 476 starts at the position...mercer has posted the second-best fielding pct. (.986) at short so far this season, trailing only Crawford s.991 mark. ON THIS DATE IN PIRATES HISTORY July 21, 1960: The eventual World Champs improved to 52-35 with a 4-1 victory over the Dodgers at the LA Coliseum. Vern Law tossed a complete game and gave up just five hits while running his record to 12-5. Hal Smith hit a pair of solo home runs and Roberto Clemente picked up the other two RBI in the victory.
