CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM (9,314) DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA SEMINOLE IMG RADIO NETWORK (GENE DECKERHOFF, KEITH JONES) CBS (CARTER BLACKBURN, CLARK KELLOGG) Florida State may not have a first team All-ACC performer on their team, though Terance Mann is certainly capable. It s about the strength in numbers not about the individuals (for the Seminoles) this year. Florida State could have a lot of first and second team ACC all-defensive team players and if you see that you know the Seminoles have had a great year. Sean Farnham ESPN NO. 24/25 FLORIDA STATE OPENS ACC SEASON AT NO. 3/4 DUKE ON SATURDAY No. 24/25 Florida State, which has won 11 of its first 12 games of the year for the second consecutive season, opens its 27 th season of ACC Basketball as it travels to play No. 3/4 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017. The game will be televised nationally by CBS. The Seminoles game against the Blue Devils marks the fourth time in their ACC history that they have opened their conference schedule against a nationally ranked Duke team (also 1996-97, 2000-01 and 2008-09). Florida State enters Saturday s game ranked 24 th nationally in the Associated Press poll and 25 th nationally in the USA Today Coaches poll. It marks the third consecutive week and 18 th week in the last two seasons the Seminoles have been nationally ranked. Florida State has won each of its last two games (over Charleston Southern and Southern Miss) after opening the season with nine consecutive wins its second longest winning streak in the last two seasons after winning a school-record 12 consecutive games and vaulting to the nation s No. 6 ranking during the months of December of January last season. Following Saturday s game against Duke, the Seminoles play host to No. 13/14 North Carolina (Jan. 3 in Tallahassee) and travel to play at No. 15/16 Miami (Jan. 7 in Coral Gables). SEMINOLES OPEN ACC PLAY WITH A STRING OF THREE CONSECUTIVE RANKED TEAMS No. 24/25 Florida State opens ACC play with games at No. 3/4 Duke (Dec. 30), a home game against No. 13/14 North Carolina (Jan. 3), at No. 15/16 Miami (Jan. 7) and with consecutive home games against Louisville (Jan. 10) and Syracuse (Jan. 13). The Seminoles opening stretch of games brings to mind the gauntlet the Seminoles ran through to open the 2016-17 season with games at No. 11 Virginia (Won, 60-58) against No. 21 Virginia Tech (Won, 93-78), No. 7 Duke (Won, 88-72), at No. 11 North Carolina (Lost, 96-83), against No. 15 Notre Dame (Won, 83-80) and No. 12 Louisville (Won, 73-68) in what is the most successful streak of success against six consecutive ranked teams in ACC history. Florida State s 5-1 record in those six consecutive games helped them to a 26-9 overall record, a 12-6 record in ACC play, a second place finish in the ACC standings and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. SEMINOLES OFF TO BEST START SINCE LAST YEAR At 11-1, Florida State is off to its best 12-game start since the beginning of the 2016-17 season (last year) when the Seminoles also won 11 of their first 12 games. The Seminoles improved to 15-1 in 2016-17 before suffering their second loss of the season. Florida State begins play in its 13 th game of a season with an 11-1 record for the fifth time in school history. The Seminoles have been 11-1 five times in school history most recently during the 2016-17 season. The Seminoles defeated No. 5 ranked Florida (in Gainesville), by an 83-66 margin their largest margin of victory (+17) over a top-five ranked AP team since joining the ACC for the 1991-92 season; Defeat No. 3/4 Duke and gain a true road win on the home court of a top-10 ranked for the second consecutive season. The Seminoles won at Florida in Gainesville (Dec. 4, 2017) earlier this season; Defeat No. 3/4 Duke and win its ACC opener for the second consecutive season. Combined with its victory over Wake Forest to begin ACC play a season ago, it would mark the first time (and second time in school history) that the Seminoles had won their ACC opener in consecutive seasons (1998-99 at Virginia and 1999-00 at Wake Forest); Defeat No. 3/4 Duke and gain their eighth win over Duke in the 16-year tenure of Seminole Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles defeated Duke three times before Hamilton became Florida State s head coach to begin the 2002-03 season. FLORIDA STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS Florida State enters Thursday s game against Southern Miss as one of only seven teams nationally with a winning percentage of 90 percent or better. FLORIDA STATE AS A RANKED TEAM THIS SEASON Florida State, which enters Saturday s game against Duke ranked 24 th nationally by the Associated Press and 25 th in the USA Today Coaches Poll, will play as a ranked team for the fifth time during the 2016-17 season against the Blue Devils. The Seminoles are 3-1 and have won two consecutive games as a ranked team this season. Florida State s game against the Blue Devils marks their second road game of the 2016-17 season as a ranked team. Quoting Florida State Men s Basketball A word to the wise: Do not sleep on the Seminoles in the ACC. Jon Rothstein CBSSports Florida State, that s an NCAA Tournament team. They re good. They have some veteran guys. They have guys that have been around. They, obviously, are well coached and have a lot of weapons. Steve Pikiell Rutgers University Head Coach Florida State freshman Ike Obiagu is already one of the best shot blockers in the sport. The 7-footer has blocked a combined 24 shots in his first nine college games and has had six games already with three or more rejections. When 7-4 junior Christ Koumadje returns, the Seminoles will have as good a shotblocking duo as there is in college basketball. Jon Rothstein CBS Sports Network They (Florida State) have depth in every position. It allows him (Coach Leonard Hamilton) to keep a certain amount of energy on the floor, particularly defensively. They ve got quality players that play with a lot of confidence. Defensively they could be as good as any teams that he s had previously. And he obviously stresses that. That s always been a strength of Leonard s teams. Al Skinner Kennesaw State Head Coach Florida State s upset of Florida on Monday night shouldn t come as a massive surprise. The Seminoles may have lost Xavier Rathan- Mayes, Dwayne Bacon, and Jonathan Isaac from last year s team that was a three seed in the NCAA Tournament, but this team s perimeter nucleus Trent Forrest, Terance Mann, CJ Walker, and M.J. Walker were all high-level recruits coming out of high school. Jon Rothstein CBS Sports Network On an extremely deep team last year Terance Mann put up rock solid numbers while getting plenty of playing time. Mann scored double digits 15 times with his best performance coming in a 93-78 win vs Virginia Tech. A very good sign from Mann last year was the fact he played well against some of the better teams in the country (Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Duke, and Florida). Tony Patellis All Things ACC Trent Forrest showed in relatively limited minutes the ability to scorer off the bounce and outstanding perimeter defensive ability. The Seminoles will rely heavily on him. Michael Bradley Lindy s College Basketball Annual "There is no question he (Mfiondu Kabengele) has worked as hard as anyone on our team. Quoting Florida State Men s Basketball The Seminoles dominated Tulane from the opening tip Sunday to complete quite a week with wins over Florida on the road and over Loyola (Md.). The victory over the Gators should send a strong signal that the Seminoles should be taken seriously in the ACC this season. Leonard Hamilton teams is at its best when it defends and it was stingy against Florida and Tulane. Taking on Oklahoma State later in the week, a team that Hamilton used to coach, could give the Seminoles another reason to think this season will turn out quite well. Andy Katz NCAA.com Florida State freshman Ike Obiagu is already one of CBB's top shot blockers. Has blocked three or more shots in six of his first nine college games. Elite rim protector. Jon Rothstein CBS Sports Network It may be the case that FSU's 17-point win in Gainesville really is a big deal, in which case it will be time to call Leonard Hamilton's bunch the surprise team (in a good direction) of 2017-18 so far. More specifically, this could turn out to be the best shooting team that Hamilton's yet had in Tallahassee. No one, to my knowledge, saw that coming the season after onetime mainstays Jonathan Isaac, Dwayne Bacon and Xavier Rathan- Mayes had all made their departures. Well done, Terrance Mann & Co. (I see you, M.J. Walker). John Gasaway ESPN.com The week's highest-ranked newcomer, Florida State won at Florida to start the week, and then picked up a couple more wins to move to 9-0. Terance Mann has taken on a much bigger scoring load -- and is shooting 65 percent from the field. He had 25 against Florida. Jeff Borzello ESPN.com Already with one of the country s most notable wins of the season on their resume -- a dominating 83-66 road victory at then-no. 5 Florida on Dec. 5 -- the Seminoles are one win away from matching the best start in school history. Tyler Waddell Springfield News Sun We felt all along that we were a lot better than what people had predicted. I understand why everyone is somewhat surprised. We lost four starters that were pretty good players off a team that won 26 games. We lost five players, including Jarquez (Smith). Even though he wasn t a starter, he was very instrumental in every game that we played. So I m not sure people really understood the value that our returning players had on the success of our team last year. Leonard Hamilton Florida State Basketball Unlike each of the past two seasons, when five-star freshmen were asked to carry much of the load offensively, this squad has been propelled mostly by second-, third- and fourth-year players. Ira Schoffel Warchant FORREST CALLED THE MOST COMPLETE DEFENDER BY SEMINOLE COACHING STAFF Sophomore Trent Forrest, who led the Seminoles in steals with 43 in 2016-17, has been called Florida State s most complete defender by the coaching staff. The staff has called Brian Angola the Seminoles best on-ball defender, Phil Cofer the best off-ball defender, Christ Koumadje the best rim protector and Forrest to the most complete defender on the Seminoles roster. LEADS SEMINOLES IN GIVING AND TAKING AWAY Sophomore Trent Forrest, who totaled 12 assists and three seals, enters Saturday s game against Duke as Florida State s leader in both assists (48 / 4.4 apg) and steals (20 / 1.8 spg). He is looking to become the first player since Derwin Kitchen during the 2010-11 season to lead the Seminoles in both statistical categories. NOTING FORREST S 12 ASSISTS AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS Trent Forrest s 12 assists against Southern Miss are tied for the 16 th highest single game total in school history.
