Kickball is a central activity in the book, and you can re-create the fun with your own students! Through an exciting game of kickball, teams take turns answering fun trivia questions about The Losers Club, as well as other favorites from the Losers Club book list! MATERIALS NEEDED Kickball field image (included) Hit cards (included) Trivia cards (included) Three baskets: one to hold trivia cards, one to hold hit cards, and one to hold used cards A scoresheet Art 2017 by Laura Park Sometimes the best stories happen off the page.

Before You Play 1. Cut out the hit cards and trivia cards included in this packet. You will only need the trivia cards for the book you decide to focus on in your game. There are also blank trivia cards for the teacher or students to write their own questions. 2. Place the hit cards in one basket, the trivia cards in a second basket, and leave a third basket empty to fill with used cards once the game is in motion. 3. Divide the class into two groups or teams, and have each team decide on a name. 4. Flip a coin to see which team is the home team. 5. To play this game, each team will need to have a kicking order. Basically, this is the order that you have students seated at their desks. 6. Display the kickball field image on an overhead projector or whiteboard, which the teacher will use to move players around the field. 7. You are ready to play ball! Play Ball 1. To begin, remind students that kickball has bases, innings, and three outs. Also, remind them of sportsmanship. 2. The visiting team plays first. 3. The teacher draws a trivia card and reads it to the team. The team will then attempt to provide the correct answer. 4. If the team chooses the wrong answer, then it is an out. Record the out on the board. 5. If the team chooses the correct answer, then the first kicker on that team is up. They draw a card from the hit cards. If they draw a card that says Single on it, then the batter has kicked a single. The teacher will put an X on first base. Follow this logic for cards that say Double, Triple, or Home Run. If there are other runners on base, the teacher will move them accordingly. 6. Continue steps 3 5 until the team gets three outs. Then the other team is up. 7. Play as many innings as you have time for! Coaching Notes 1. The main goal of this game is for students to have fun remembering trivia from The Losers Club and other favorites on the Losers Club book list. This game also gets kids excited about reading books they may not have read yet! 2. Please understand that this will take some time. Don t be surprised if you only get through 3 4 innings. 3. While one team is up to kick, you can encourage the other team to silently think about what the answer might be and to show good sportsmanship. If the team that is up does not answer correctly, the other team has the opportunity to steal by consulting with their teammates and answering the question correctly. If they get the answer correct, they earn a run. 4. Use the blank trivia cards to add trivia questions about some of your students other favorite books! Art 2017 by Laura Park Let students know a month before you play in case they want to read the other books on the Losers Club book list to gain a competitive edge! See the back of the poster in this kit for a reproducible copy of the list. Game prepared by Erica Rand Silverman and Sharon Kennedy (who would have loved to have been in a Losers Club), former English teachers and cofounders of Room 228 Educational Consulting, along with educator Kelly Hoover rm228.com
