LATEST NEWS NEW KENT PETANQUE WEB SITE LAUNCHED www.kentpetanque.org PLOUGH & CHEQUERS ARE BACK IN EUROPE (See page 5 for more details) 1

LOCAL NEWS The new Kent Pétanque Association web site has now been officially launched. www.kentpetanque.org The site is a joint venture between the Kent Pétanque Association and the Kent Pétanque League. All club and individuals membership of the Association were up for renewal on 1st March 2005. At the time of writing (10th March) nearly half (27) of our clubs have not yet affiliated and around 600 members have still to renew their membership. Members are reminded that they must have a valid licence/membership card to play in any British, English or County event, as well as those wishing to play abroad. Also members wishing to play in the Kent and Crowborough Pétanque Leagues will require membership. MORE ANNIVERSARIES Hot on the heels of GRFC s 25th anniversary (as publicised in last month s Gazette) Jack Milner has advised me that it s the Old Sheaf s tenth anniversary this year. Of the original 6 founder club members, from February 1995, only Morton Almond and Jack remain with 10 years each of unbroken membership. The 10 year celebrations were outlined at their AGM and will be made known in due course. However, it is intended that they will have a reunion of past members of the original Chatham Wheatsheaf club who are now members of other local clubs and those now scattered around the country. Also celebrating an anniversary are Seal Pétanque Club who are 30 years old this year. As well as being the sole surviving founder member of the Kent League and the (now defunct) South East Region they are also one of the oldest surviving clubs in the Country. THE LAST POST (WOT - NO MORE SNAIL MAIL) This issue of the Kent Pétanque Gazette will be the last issue circulated via Royal Mail. The majority of our clubs already receive the newsletter via e-mail. Now that it will be posted on the County web site as well it is not unreasonable to assume that, in this day and age, every club has at least one member with access to e-mail or the internet. The following clubs are asked to supply an e-mail contact to the address on the back page (if they have not done so already on their club affiliation forms) so that they can be notified when a new newsletter is posted on the web site: Battle, Bellringers, Bridges, Cocks, Duke of Edinburgh, Horseshoe & Castle, Junction Inn, Luddesdown Cocks, New Optimists, Pétanque D Uckfield, Singleton Barn, Star, Veterans and Whitstable. Clubs will be given the option of receiving the newsletter via e-mail, as soon as it is released, or being notified when the latest issue has been uploaded onto the web site so that they can read, print or download it at their leisure. FIXTURE CARDS OUT NOW Kent Pétanque Association fixture lists are being distributed now with membership cards. Ask your club secretary for yours!

DESPERATELY SEEKING BOULE Ex South East and Northern Region member Matt Blyton is experiencing "boule withdrawal" symptoms since immigrating to Cyprus. He hasn t picked up a boule for over two months and is anxious to play. If anyone can put Matt in touch with fellow South East ex-pats Angie and Malcolm Curtis, who emigrated to Cyprus a while ago please contact the editor at the address on the back page and I'll pass on their details. So you think you know the rules do you? Our final look at disputes over the rules that actually occurred during league matches last season. To prove how the rules get misinterpreted I have been told that my team mate and I must be least 2m apart from one another- Article 17. I found this very frustrating as she is an attractive lady. CLUB MOVE After playing their winter league matches at the Cock Inn, Luddesdown players from the Golden Lion P.C have officially moved to the venue and are now know as the Henley Street Cocks Pétanque Club. They will be piste sharing with the original tenants, the Luddesdown Cocks P.C. The move has obviously paid dividends as they have already signed up four new members for the 2005 season. FLYING HIGH FOR CHARITY Report from Mick Nash On Sunday 6th March Joyce Nash of Hartley Country Club P.C. gave up mothers day to take part in Cancer Research UK's world record abseil. She abseiled from the top of Twickenham Rugby Stadium. When all her sponsorship is collected she will have raised around 700 for Cancer Research. Lucky you to have an attractive team mate, the last time I played in a triples match two of us tried in vain to put as much distance as possible between us and our third player who had been eating garlic the night before. Mike Pegg (International Umpire) RULE CHANGE A minor amendment was made to the Kent County Qualifier Rules for 2005. As the first County Qualifier unfortunately clashes with the ICQS Top 16 weekend then teams who qualify for the top 16 will be awarded points for the missing qualifier equal to the average points they have scored in all the qualifiers they have been eligible to take part in. It was also clarified that membership cards, and not licences, would be required for the qualifiers. NEW COMMITTEE MEMBER John Skingley of Lordswood P.C. was appointed to fill one of the vacancies on the County Management Committee. His proposal received unanimous acceptance by the current Management Committee. Joyce Nash in action at the start of her abseil. NATIONAL APPOINTMENT Dave Lavelle, of the Plough & Chequers, has been confirmed as GB Junior Team Manager for 2005. Dave has been the corner stone of Youth Development in this country for many years. As well as having held the posts of National Youth Development Officer and Junior Team Manager he also devised and instigated the excellent Junior Award Scheme. His appointment as team manager this year is long overdue.

NATIONAL MATTERS INSURANCE CHANGE Members should note that there is NO personal accident cover included with this year s membership. Previously this was included as part of the membership package to the under 70 s. Spiralling insurance premiums and the lack of any claims have forced the BPF/EPA to drop this particular aspect of the cover. WEB PAGE NOW LIVE The long awaited launch of the English Pétanque Association web site has taken place. The site is a mine of information including details of the National Officers, Regions, Clubs, Fixtures, Results, Competition Rules, Competition Entry Form, EPA Constitution etc. You can also play spot the Kent player as several of our members are pictured on the Home page. The picture changes randomly every time you visit the page. Check it out for yourself at: www.englishpetanque.org.uk 16 FOR BREAN? It has been confirmed that the Scottish Pétanque Association have not taken up the invitation by the EPA to enter a squad in this year s Inter-Regional Championships. Consequently the EPA Director of Playing has been asked to look at forming an EPA combined squad again. Assuming this takes the form of previous years then the Kent Association will be asked to take management of the squad (as last year s champions) and also to put in four senior and one junior team. ROUND THE REGIONS Eastern Many of our senior members will remember Merlay Thomas, who sadly passed away on 7th March. He was a member of Nene Pétanque Club, a founder member of the Eastern Region and he was a former President of the BPA. Our condolences to his family. (Source www.britishpetanque.org) West Midlands After a vote at a special meeting on 20th February the new name of the West Midlands Region will be. the West Midlands Region. Members rejected suggestions such as Mercia, Central, Midshires etc in favour of their original name. (Source http://groups.msn.com/westmidlandspetanque) Chiltern With the demise of Braintree this year the first big event of the year fell at Whittlesey with the final of the indoor grand prix series for the top 18 qualifiers. Chiltern were well represented in the finals with one of their teams taking away the honours and the top cash prize. (See page 5 for the match result). Southern Are holding an EGM on 21st March to consider the dissolution of the Southern Region. This will be followed by the inaugural meeting of its successor body. APETITO SHIELD Match Report by William Bunting On a day when the Arctic conditions really separated the men (and ladies) from the boys, 11 hardy teams met at Seal Pétanque Club to contest the annual Apetito Shield Doubles competition the first open event of the year in the Kent calendar. Teams from Hartley, Maidstone and as far afield as Worthing made it an exciting and competitive event, though it was a day when home advantage seemed to be prevalent. A closely fought final between two Seal teams, Steve Tait and Robert Ogden and Howard Sandom and Mike Hide, resulted in Howard and Mike taking the Trophy. Total prize money was 60. The plate winners were Hartley. Match Summary: Competition: : Apetito Shield Venue : Crown Inn, Seal Date : 6th March Winners : Seal (H.Sandom/M.Hide) Runners Up : Seal (S.Tait/R.Ogden) No. of Teams : 11 INDOOR GP FINAL (Source http://p.etanque.tripod.com/chiltern) The finals of the Whittlesey Indoor Grand Prix series were held at Whittlesey (where else?) on Sunday 6th March. With a total prize fund of 600 up for grabs play was intense. Last year s winners L Equipe (Simon Bird, Soffiane Lachani and new team mate Phil Claydon) cruised through to the final winning all 6 of their games. The second final spot was a bit closer but the Chiltern Region side, the Engine, went through on points difference. The Engine eventually ran out winners 13-12. Match Summary: Competition : Indoor Grand Prix Final Venue : Whittlesey Date : 6th March Winners : Engine (Miles/Phil/Matt) Runners Up : L Equipe (S.Bird/S.Lachani/P.Claydon) No. of Teams : 18 Info from David Baxter The GB qualifier for the European Cup for Clubs was held at Whittlesey on March 13th. Half of the contenders came from Kent as GRFC, Hartley, Plough & Chequers 1 and 2 all qualified by virtue of their finishing positions in the National League. Unfortunately three of them were all seeded in the same half of the draw. Plough & Chequers 2 overcame Hartley 4-1 in the first round. GRFC had a marathon match against Coventry. Despite going into a 3-2 lead at one stage the match came down to a single point in the final triples match. Sadly the 13-12 score-line went the way of Coventry. Another tight game followed for Coventry but this time the deciding game went the way of the Kent side as Plough & Chequers 2 made it through to the final. Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the draw Plough & Chequers 1 had a good 4-1 win over last year s British Qualifiers, Victorians before coming unstuck against Ventnor 1. Despite the 4-1 score-line in the final all but one of the games were very close and hard fought to a very high standard. After winning the opening triples 13-0 and 13-12 the three doubles games in round 2 were extremely hard fought as can be seen from the scores: Full Results: P & C 2 4 Open Double 1 - P&C 13 Ventnor 12 Open Double 2 P&C 11 Ventnor 13 Mixed Double - P&C 13 Ventnor 10 V P & C 2 4 Hartley 1 Coventry 4 V Coventry 3 GRFC 3 Ventnor 1 4 V Ventnor 1 4 Ventnor 2 3 Victorians 1 V P & C 1 1 P & C 1 4 V P & C 2 4 V V Victorians 1 For a picture of the winning squad check out the revamped BPF web site at: www.englishpetanque.org.uk

PÉTANQUE WORLD OTELLO DIES!"#$%& One of France s greatest known pétanque champions, Robert Trovatelli (pictured right in typical pose) died on 9th February. He was better known under the name of Otello after the Shakespeare character. FRENCH PRESIDENT RE-ELECTED French Federation President Claude Azéma was re-elected for a new four year term. In a poll without surprises thirteen of the fourteen outgoing candidates were re-elected with ease. Info and picture courtesy of www.petanque.com Pétanque New Zealand won the Oceania Tournament for the first time this year. The bi-annual Championships took place in Rotorua in early February. Squads from five Nations (Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Wallis & Futuna Islands) competed over five disciplines Singles, Double, Triples, Pointing and Shooting for both men and women in each category. Info from Jack Milner It has been confirmed that the 200 donation from the Kent Pétanque League towards the Junior Fund was a belated donation of 100 for last season together with another 100 for this season, contrary to last months article. On the same subject Crowborough Pétanque Club are thanked for their kind donation of 25 that was included with their club registration.
