DAVID SHORT GOLF Lisbon GOLF WEEK Based at the Pestana Cascais Hotel, Lisbon, Portugal 7th - 14th May 2016 We embark on our annual trip to the Lisbon region in May, but instead of traveling north of the City as we have in the last two years, we are returning to the ever fashionable district of Cascais. Not only is Cascais close to a number of the best courses in Lisbon, but it is the former residence of the Royal Family and is a charming village, dominated by the bay and the imposing Cidadela fort. The historic centre is brimming with architectural treasures of a religious, military and civil nature, not to forget a host of quite superb sea-food restaurants in particular. Our accommodation for the week is the 4 star Pestana Cascais Hotel and we will play the top five courses in the area, including the quite superb Oitavos course. If you wish to book a place on the Lisbon Golf Week please let us know and we will send you the confirmation details accordingly. David Short

Each room also has a fully equipped kitchenette.
THE GOLF COURSES Quinta da Marinha Golf Club The Quinta da Marinha golf course is one of the finest courses in the Lisbon area. The par 71 course, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, offers fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains. When playing the course, we can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones; with the elevated Greens and Tees, many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, we will have to use all the clubs in our bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Some of the holes for us to really look forward to are the 5th, where we play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with four bunkers. The 10th, which is a beautiful Par 5, with two lakes and requiring all shots to be well thought out to avoid the water. The 13th Par 4, is one of the most famous holes in Portuguese Golf, with its view of the Atlantic Ocean, being used for many years to promote Golf in Portugal abroad. The 14th is also a super hole and is played over a natural ravine to a quite a demanding Green. The new modern style Clubhouse was designed by the Architect João Paciência and opened in April 2011. With a modern style, and overlooking the 3rd hole and the putting green, it is the perfect place to enjoy a well deserved beer or G&T after our round. Estoril Palacio Golf Club The Estoril Championship Course opened in 1929 and was then redesigned in 1936 by Mackenzie Ross. It is known as one of the oldest and most emblematic Clubs in Portugal and where two of the Portuguese most important tournaments have been held frequently, the Portuguese Open for 20 years and the Portuguese International Amateur Championship for 63 years. A long list of famous golfers have played Estoril including Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie, Sam Torrance, Gene Sarazen, Peter Allis and Bernard Gallacher. Overlooking Estoril and the sea, the course is set amongst eucalyptus, mimosas and pine trees giving a uniquely colourful touch that demands excellent tactics and challenges in accuracy rather than distance. The visually stunning par 3 holes, although all varying in length, pose particular challenges; the 4th hole, the Peppers Hole surrounded by pepper trees and the 8th hole, the Tea Cup, is well known due to the always challenging flag position. Belas Club de Campo Golf Club Designed by the renowned golf architect, William "Rocky" Roquemore, author of several projects in Portugal, the Belas Golf Course is set in the mountains between Belas and Queluz. It has been perfectly integrated in Charles Franzman's master-plan for the Country Club's residential development of houses spread over the hills, with views over the Belas golf course and the valleys, and fairways sheltered from the wind. At Belas Golf Course, there are two holes notable for their beauty and their challenging qualities; the 2nd hole, a Par 5 called Augusta, was built in homage to the 13th hole of the famous golf course where the Masters tournament takes place. And the 18th, a memorable Par 4 finisher, was christened "The Big Hole", because of the second stroke players must make some 180 metres to the green, which is well protected by a lake.
Oitavos Dunes Golf Club Oitavos Dunes is ranked as the 65th best course in the world and the second best in mainland Europe. The recognition is a result of several improvements and changes to the course, including a new landing area on 11th hole and new tees on 7th and 9th holes. The history of the course is quite fascinating. The grandfather of today's owner Miguel Champalimaud, Carlos Montez Champalimaud, discovered this magnificent piece of land in 1908. With rare foresight, until his death in 1937, he worked to stabilize the sand dunes and plant pine forests to prepare for the development of a residential estate and tourist destination of exceptional quality. Permits were secured by his son, Carlos Sommer Champalimaud and in the 50's and 60's and the vision for Quinta da Marinha was expanded. He constructed roads and developed the first home sites. Importantly, he drilled water wells in the adjacent hills and introduced sports facilities for horse racing and tennis. When his son, Miguel Champalimaud (today's owner) joined the family business he worked together with his father Carlos to secure final approvals over a 17 year period and since the death of his father, the family vision has come to fruition. Over recent years, state of the art Health & Racket Club facilities, an Equestrian Centre, and magnificent residential estates have been developed which add to the lure of Quinta da Marinha. In 2001, the focal point of Quinta da Marinha was the Championship golf course Oitavos Golfe, designed by Arthur Hills to surround a 5-Star Hotel set to open some years later, as indeed it now has. As the course became recognised internationally as a Links experience, the decision was made to change the name to Oitavos Dunes to reflect the natural sand dunes, impacts of the Ocean and Scottish like playing conditions, which all contribute to the way many view Oitavos Dunes as Natural Links Golf. Today, Miguel and his four children remain committed to the family legacy and vow to continue to enhance the reputation and prestige of Quinta da Marinha and the Oitavos Dunes course in the years ahead. Penha Longa Golf Club Atlantic Course Ranked in the top 30 Courses in Continental Europe, the 27 holes at the Penha Longa Resort, designed by the famed Robert Trent Jones Junior, are escapist golf at its best. With its bold drives, courageous approaches and artful greens, the course is both an adrenalin rush and a soothing journey through one of Portugal's most inspiring landscapes. Exciting at every turn, this championship challenge and host to the Portuguese Open, is a master of variety and thrills.
