Inventory of the Prairie State Canoeists Records In the Regional History Center RC 244

1 INTRODUCTION Margaret Strobel, president of the Prairie State Canoeists, donated the organization s records to the Northern Illinois Regional History Center on May 8, 2000. An addition was made to the collection on November 30, 2000 by Evelyn and Larry Tennyson. Several addenda to the collection were added at later dates. Property rights in the collection belong to the Regional History Center; literary rights are dedicated to the public. There are no restrictions on access to the collection. Linear feet of shelf space: 4.25 Number of containers: 10 Northern Illinois Regional History Center Collection 244 SCOPE AND CONTENT The records for the Prairie State Canoeists are divided into two series: Organization Records and Trip Reports. Series I, Organization Records, consists the original Articles of Incorporation, by-laws and resolutions, and meeting minutes from 1988 to present. The meeting minutes before 1988 have been lost. Series II, Trip Reports, date from 1975 to 1998 and contain the reports written by the leader of each trips and a lists of participants. The Addendum to the collection contains newsletters dating from 1971 to the present. HISTORICAL SKETCH Incorporated on January 20, 1971, the Prairie State Canoeists is a paddling club of people mainly from northeast Illinois. The purpose of the organization, as stated in its Certificate of Incorporation is to operate exclusively for scientific, educational, pleasure, social, welfare and recreational purposes primarily for its members and incidentally for the benefit of the public generally, in the promotion and pursuit of canoeing, kayaking, and directly related activities including the establishment, maintenance and preservation of canoe trails and natural water courses, and including the conservation of natural resources; and also to engender and maintain an ecological awareness in its members and the public generally in support of these activities. The canoeists run about 120 canoe trips per year all over the United States but mainly in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana. Ecology Prairie State Canoeists Recreation SUBJECT TRACINGS
