Auburn in the Pros In the 2002 U.S. Open, Auburn allumni Lee Pearson and Stephen Huss represented the Tigers as a doubles duo, which fell in the first round to Johan Landsberg and Tom Vanhoudt 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5. We have had quite a number of players go out and play professionally after they played at Auburn. Derrick Tarr, Cyril Buscaglione, Michael Hegarty, Lee Pearson, Dan Cassidy, Pat Cassidy, Howard Herr, Rameez Junaid and Stephen Huss. Playing college tennis at Auburn is a great stepping stone to the next level. The results that Stephen and Lee have had is an example of this. They played in the Australian Open in doubles in 2001 and 2002. They also competed in the 2001 US Open Doubles Tournament. Clearly their experience and exposure in collegiate tennis has helped propel them to the next level which is a career in the pro tour. -- Auburn Head Lee Pearson has played in three Grand Slam doubles tournaments. Stephen Huss opend 2005 ranked No.108 in doubles and advanced to the second round of the 2005 Australian Open 26

The Southeastern Conference The Nation s Top Tennis Conference The Southeastern Conference men's tennis programs are among the nation's leader on the collegiate hardcourt. That trend continued as the conference made another strong national showing in 2004. For the second straight year all 12 teams made the 64 team field. In team competition, Vanderbilt advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2004 Division I Men's Tennis Championship before losing to a strong Illinois team. In singles, Auburn's Gabor Zoltan Pelva was defeated by Baylor's Benjamin Becker in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships. Georgia's double team of Bo Hodge and John Isner played Stanford's KC Corkery and Sam Warburg in the doubles final. The Stanford duo defeated Hodge and Isner, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 for the title. Overall the SEC has 16 NCAA singles champions in men's tennis dating back to 1930. Eight of those singles titles have come since 1984. Prior to Matias Boeker's repeat last season, Florida's Jeff Morrison won the title in 1999. Five of the nine doubles titles have come since 1993, with all five coming from different SEC schools. Florida won in 1993 with the doubles tandem of David Blair and partner, singles champion Merklein. Mississippi State followed in 1994 with Laurent Miquelard and Joc Simmons and Ole Miss duo Mahesh Bhupathi and Ali Hamadeh captured the doubles title in 1995. In 2001, Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott of Georgia took home the title. National team titles for the league have been captured by Tulane (1959) and in it's current configuration, Georgia. The Bulldogs boasts four men's NCAA championship team titles (1985, 1987, 1999 and 2001). 2004 SEC Final Standings Western Division SEC Pct. ALL Pct. Luther Young Tennis Complex Auburn has set the plans to give the Luther Young Tennis Center a facelift as well as make key additions. The Project budget of $3.5 million includes not only four new indoor courts, but also an entirely new stadium including outdoor courts. "This is great for the Auburn program to get our four new indoor courts and a new outdoor complex," said Auburn head coach Eric Shore. "The planning has been in effect for a while and it is exciting to have it come together." The indoor courts will be started first and will be a much anticipated addition, with the occurrence of inclement weather. "We look forward to construction starting," added Coach Shore. "This will be a great addition and will be helpful so that we don't lose any more practice time with bad weather." For the time being, the men's and women's teams will continue to play at the Luther Young Tennis Complex, which has been their home since 1978. Auburn tennis players have at their disposal some of the finest training and fitness equipment in collegiate athletics. The weight room, located in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum right next to the Luther Young Tennis Center, accommodates 75 players and features the latest in strength-building and cardiovascular equipment. The training room is equipped with four Ultrasound and one Ultrasonic machines, three whirlpools, bicycles and various other exercise equipment. In addition, Electric and Hydro therapy services are offered to athletes. The men s and women s tennis team have at least one trainer at every practice and match to assist the players. Luther Young, for whom the tennis center is named, coached the Tigers to 143 wins over his 26 years on the Plains. 29
