The competition s judge, Master Spinner, Harriet Boon commented that all the fleece were well presented and in good condition and certainly appealing to the handspinners. The coloured fleeces were of particular visual appeal in excellent crimp and staple length. The Fleece Auction to be held on Sunday, November 14 th will definitely be the place to be to buy some of Canada s most excellent fleece. The Royal Agriculture Winter Fair and sponsor, the Canadian Co-Operative Wool Growers Ltd and our Judge congratulate the 2010 Grand Champion, Gillian Mullins of Sterling, Ontario whose Coloured Lamb Fleece shorn by Rod Short from a Blue Faced Leicester x Corrriedale x Romney Lamb took top prize. The competition was close as last year s Grand Champion, Wind Dancer Farm of Holland Centre, ON presented a Fine White Fleece whose brightness earned top marks but this year only enough for Reserve Grand Champion. Honours also went to Anne Bishop and Jan Morrell of Falmouth, Nova Scotia for a first place in the Specialty class for their entry of an Icelandic Yearling Ram Fleece, shorn by Lucas Lange, New Germany, NS. Our Champion, Gillian Mullins also earned red ribbons in several other categories proving that she is indeed a most

Fleece worthy Royal Competitor. The coloured fleeces, so cherished by spinners and knitters everywhere, took most of this year s honours amongst them was a Youth Entry competing in the open show. The Royal Agriculture Winter Fair is delighted to present Victoria Clare of Campbellford, Ontario with a red ribbon and a score of 89% on a Bluefaced Leicester cross lamb in the coloured wool. In the Strong Longwool sections, Ann Moffat, a long time Lincoln breeder and exhibitor in both wool and sheep, from Schomberg Ontario, had several entries and claimed the top two placings as has come to be expected of her fleece. 2009 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Fleece Competition A special thanks sto Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Ltd. For their contribution to the prize money. Judge: Carol Coleman Trotter Judge's Comment: It was my honour and pleasure to judge the Fleece Competition at the 2009 RAWF. All of the entries were all carefully presented and worthy of merit. Some placements were difficult to make and may have been decided on only minor variations such as fleece weight or staple length. Congratulations to the owners of the Grand and Reserve Champion fleeces - these entries stood out as exceptional fibre, uniform in character from shoulder to britch, promising high yield and full value to any handspinner or processor.
