2017-18 MAVERICKS NOTES Statistical research assistance provided by the Elias Sports Bureau, STATS LLC, Basketball-Reference.com, NBA.com/Stats, ESPN DIRK ON THE NBA S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST: Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki ranks sixth all-time in career scoring with 30,951 points. He needs 49 points to become the sixth player in NBA history to reach 31,000 points. Wilt Chamberlain ranks fifth ahead of Nowitzki with 31,419 points. Nowitzki became the sixth player in league history and the first international player to reach the 30,000-point plateau with a 15-foot baseline jumper over Larry Nance Jr. at the 10:58 mark of the second quarter against the L.A. Lakers on 3/7/17 (the basket gave him 20 points for the game and exactly 30,000 for his career). Nowitzki, who was assisted by Devin Harris on the play, fittingly achieved the milestone on a fadeaway. He joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928), Kobe Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292) and Chamberlain (31,419) in the NBA s exclusive 30,000-point club. Through 3/7/17, there had been 4,142 players who appeared in an NBA game and Nowitzki was one of only six with 30,000 points. LeBron James recently became the seventh member of the 30,000-point club at San Antonio on 1/23/18, joining Nowitzki as one of two active players in the group. When he reached the milestone, Nowitzki also became just the third player in league history to score 30,000 points with one franchise, joining Malone (Jazz) and NBA S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST (TOP 10) RANK PLAYER CAREER PTS 1 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 38,387 2 Karl Malone 36,928 3 Kobe Bryant 33,643 4 Michael Jordan 32,292 5 Wilt Chamberlain 31,419 6 Dirk Nowitzki 30,951 7 LeBron James 30,236 8 Shaquille O Neal 28,596 9 Moses Malone 27,409 10 Elvin Hayes 27,313 Bryant (Lakers). A sellout crowd of 20,484 was on hand at American Airlines Center to witness Nowitzki hit the 30,000-point mark. The 13-time All-Star entered the Mavericks game against the Lakers on 3/7/17 needing 20 points for 30,000. He poured in 20 points in the game s first 13 minutes and 2 seconds the secondfastest he has ever reached the 20-point mark in his career (Nowitzki tallied 20 points 10:49 into a game vs. Chicago on 12/27/01, back when he was only 23 years old). Prior to Nowitzki, Jordan was the only player to reach the 30-point plateau at home. Coincidently, Nowitzki also eclipsed 20,000 career points against the Lakers back in 2009-10 (also at home on 1/13/10). Nowitzki posted 18 points in the opening quarter against Los Angeles on 3/7/17, matching the highest-scoring first quarter of his career (18 vs. Memphis 2/7/07). The big German finished with a game-high 25 points (9-13 FGs, 3-4 3FGs, 4-4 FTs), all in the first half, to go along with 11 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action on 3/7/17. In 2015-16, Nowitzki passed Shaquille O Neal (28,596) for sixth place on the NBA s all-time scoring list with a 17-foot baseline jumper over Andrea Bargnani at the 9:51 mark of the second quarter at Brooklyn on 12/23/15 (the basket gave him 10 points for the game and 28,597 for his career). DIRK S 20TH SEASON IN DALLAS: The 2017-18 campaign marks Dirk Nowitzki s 20 th season with the Mavericks. He joins Kobe Bryant (Lakers) as the sole members of the NBA s 20-year, only one-team club. Sacramento s Vince Carter, who is also in his 20 th season, joins Nowitzki as one of seven players in NBA history to play 20 seasons overall (Carter is the only other active player with 20-or-more years of NBA experience). The five non-active players that have played 20-plus NBA seasons are: Kevin Garnett (21), Robert Parish (21), Kevin Willis (21), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (20) and Bryant (20). When Nowitzki and Carter squared off in Dallas on 10/20/17, they became just the second set of players with 20-or-more years of NBA experience to go head-to-head. The listed capacity for American Airlines Center is 19,200 but that can be surpassed because of attendance in the suites. Since moving into American Airlines Center (2001-02 season), the Mavericks have posted a home mark of 476-201 (.703) during the regular season. Dallas has sold out all 41 home games in each of the last 15 seasons (2002-17). REGULAR SEASON GAMES ONLY (Mavs Home Sellout Streak) REGULAR SEASON GAMES + PLAYOFF GAMES ( Mavs Home Sellout Streak) 666 733 AMES ALUMS REUNITED: When the Mavericks acquired fourth-year forward Doug McDermott from New York in a trade-deadline deal on 2/8/18, he was reunited with his high school teammate, Harrison Barnes. The duo led the Ames Little Cyclones to back-to-back Iowa 4A state championships and a combined 53-0 record during their junior and senior years (2008-09 and 2009-10). When Barnes and McDermott were seniors in 2010, the odds were roughly one in every 16,000 that a non-collegiate resident of Ames would go on to be an NBA lottery pick. They both achieved that feat, as Barnes was taken with the seventh overall pick in 2012 and McDermott was selected 11 th overall in 2014. Coincidently, when he was on the Bulls, McDermott played for another Ames High School alum in Fred Hoiberg. The only other Ames alum to play in the NBA (other than Barnes, McDermott and Hoiberg) is Dick Gibbs, who played six seasons with Houston, Kansas City-Omaha, Seattle, Washington and Buffalo from 1971-76. J.J. BAREA RECEIVES OCTOBER NBA CARES COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD: Mavericks guard J.J. Barea received the October NBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by Kaiser Permanente in recognition of his continuous relief efforts in Puerto Rico following devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. The award recognizes an NBA player each month who best reflects the passion that the league and its players share for giving back to their communities. Kaiser Permanente and the NBA honored Barea for his work to immediately initiate aid for Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Coordinating five trips to the territory where he was born and raised, Barea used the Mavericks team plane, with help from owner Mark Cuban, to personally deliver much-needed supplies in the days after the hurricane. Working with partners in North Texas, Barea has provided more than 100,000 pounds of supplies to the island, including 32 generators, 14,000 pounds of water, 10,000 pounds of food and 3,000 pounds of medical supplies, diapers, clothing, cleaning products and toiletries on the first trip alone. Barea also launched a fundraiser on YouCaring.com for families affected by the hurricane that has raised more than $250,000, and personally raised nearly $500,000. Additionally, he worked with the Mavericks to donate 100 percent of all single-game ticket sales from their Oct. 25 game against the Memphis Grizzlies to Puerto Rico, generating an additional $114,000 for the island s recovery. Before the Mavericks home game against the Boston Celtics on 11/20/17, NBA Cares Ambassador Bob Lanier presented the award to Barea during an on-court ceremony. In addition, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA donated $10,000 to the J.J. Barea Foundation.
