4-H NEWS Do you consider yourself as a Leader? Do you like the Spotlight? Do you want to become a SLO County 4-H ALL STAR? We are REACHING OUT FOR 2016-2017 4-H ALL STARS! The All Star Rank is the highest rank which a 4-H member may attain at the County level. Being a San Luis Obispo County 4-H All Star provides an opportunity for high school members to receive recognition for outstanding service. The All Stars serve as Ambassadors for the San Luis Obispo County 4-H Youth Development Program; they represent 4-H at County, Sectional, and State activities; they coordinate certain county-wide activities; and they serve as positive role models for our 4-H youth! To be eligible for the County All Star rank, a 4-H member must: - be 14 years of age or older by January 1, 2016 - been a participant in 4-H for 3 years or more - have attained a Gold Star rank by 4/15/16 - demonstrate leadership abilities, citizenship concern and maturity of judgment Each candidate for the All Star rank will be required to submit an All Star application and participate in an individual and group interview. Hello, San Luis Obispo County 4-H members! I have been a member of the Huasna Valley 4-H club in San Luis Obispo County for ten years. Through 4-H, I have served as a junior and teen leader, raised swine and poultry for the county fair, and recently achieved my Platinum and Emerald Stars. In past years, I have served as my club's reporter, secretary, treasurer, and president. In the 2015-16 year, I also had the opportunity to contribute to my county 4-H program as a San Luis Obispo County All Star. My experiences in the 4-H program have truly helped me grow in confidence, public speaking ability, and leadership skills. I appreciate the support and encouragement from the adult leaders at the 4-H office, as well as, 4-H members across the county. I m looking forward to the opportunity to represent 4-H as CA State Ambassador in the year ahead! 4-H COMMUNITY SERVICE at 4-H FIELD DAY NEWS 2016 4-H Field Day Saturday, June 4th, 2016 Paso Robles Event Center Countywide Community Service Project BAGS, BOOKS & BEARS You can receive Community Service credit by helping out with our Bags, Books and Bears Activity. ACTIVITY: Bring a small children s book and/or a small stuffed bear/animal to 4-H Field Day to the Community Service Donation Station outside of the east side of Estrella Hall at the Paso Robles Event Center. After you complete your Large or Small Animal Showmanship or during the Still Exhibits Judging Period, you can come to this area and decorate a canvas bag with artwork of your choice, then; Stuff the decorated canvas bag (sized at 8 x 9 )with a donated book and small stuffed bear/animal. Your decorated Bags, Books and Bears will be donated to the Maxine Lewis Shelter in San Luis Obispo and to the HEAD START & EARLY HEAD START Program. 4-H SLO SCIENTIST NEWS 4-H SLO Scientist Activities at Children s Day in the Plaza! Although the forecast called for much-needed spring rains on Saturday, April 9 th, lovely weather prevailed and the 38 th Annual Children s Day in the Plaza was held in San Luis Obispo s Mission Plaza without a hitch! Themed Passport to the Arts, this popular outdoor event featured science activities, dancing, singing, painting, musical instruments, community resources, food and more all geared toward children and families. Our 4-H All Stars and 4-H volunteers were quite busy at our 4-H booth throughout this exciting day assisting children with a selection of fun and educational hands-on SLO Scientist activities related to soil science, chemistry and local watershed explorations, which are all provided as part of our 4-H SLO Scientist program. Many, many thanks go to 4-H All Stars Gudrun Derickson, Amanda Weddle and Mark Luna as well as 4-H volunteers David Aguirre and Dave Dauer for their wonderful efforts in assisting with our hands-on science activities throughout the event. Dagmar Derickson, 4-H Program Lead, provided pertinent information about our San Luis Obispo County to many interested parents and families throughout the day. 6 News Views

Shooting Sports Project Leader Course What: When: Rifle Discipline Saturday, May 14, 2016 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday, May 15, 2016 8:00 am - 4:00 pm WHERE: San Luis Obispo Sportsmen Association's Houge Range. 3272 Gilardi Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 >Only 14 spots are available for the training.< - Participants must attend both days of training to receive Certification. Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be certified as a Rifle Trainer and can lead a Rifle Project at the Club level or serve as County Trainer to certify other leaders. Teen leaders are invited but must attend with an adult. To qualify for this training, you must have completed the following items: Enroll in https:/ca.4honline.com in your resident county as an Adult Volunteer Complete the DOJ LiveScan process in your resident county, and Complete the Volunteer Orientation post-test If you are already enrolled as a 4-H Adult Volunteer, you do not need to complete the above steps. Lunch will also be provided both days. Participants are encouraged to bring their own eye and ear protection if desired, but it is not necessary. Please bring your completed medical release form with you on the first morning of class. The event started at 8 am with 4-H'ers from other groups showing up in their white uniforms and signing in for the Show. Overall, about 30 members showed up and had a fun time showing their dogs. It was a wonderful day and everyone had a fun time. In the first picture on right, Peyton and her dog Astro are doing the figure 8 in Obedience. In the first picture on bottom, Katie and her dog Ace placed 3rd in the Obedience class. In the second picture on bottom, Weston and his dog Riley just finished Showmanship. In the last picture on bottom, Celtin and his dog Addie, Addie and her dog Marley, and Elsie and her dog Chloe are waiting to hear their scores for Obedience. Submitted by: Sara Seay 8 News Views

4-H NEWS 4-H SLO Scientists Tour the SciTechatorium! As an enhancement to their 4-H SLO Scientist programs, the San Luis Obispo Robotics group, led by cofacilitators Aaron York and Julie Fallon, and the Santa Margarita Imagineering SLO Scientist families, led by SLO Scientist facilitator, John McCabe, had two unique opportunities this spring to tour the interactive children s science museum, the SciTechatorium, located at the Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School near Avila Beach. The museum s director and science teacher, Christian Strauli, gave fascinating presentations to the SLO Scientist groups. Student docents from the school were on hand to offer educational demonstrations and answer questions about the various exhibits. At the SciTechatorium, 4-H SLO Scientist members and families enthusiastically participated in a wide array of hands-on science exhibits and activities including the fields of electricity, space science, physics and chemistry and geological wonders with an emphasis to encourage and strengthen science exploration and investigation. Many thanks to Kate York for arranging this terrific opportunity to tour the museum and Christian Strauli and the student docents at Bellevue-Santa Fe School who made the visit an amazing learning experience for our 4-H SLO Scientists in the fields of science and technology! 9

4-H YOUTH EXPERIENCE SESSION (Y.E.S.) NEWS Several 4-Hers enjoyed a 4-H Y.E.S. (Youth Experience Session) Event "Birding with Audubon at Learning Among the Oaks" on Saturday, April 16. Audubon Birding Educators, Land Conservancy Docents and youth Oak Ambassadors led this exciting, interactive springtime nature hike in Santa Margarita. A shuttle and binoculars were provided by Audubon. Cornell Lab of Ornithology provided additional funding. Birds sightings included Tree Swallows, Acorn Woodpeckers, Yellow-billed Magpie, Oak Titmouse and a Lark Sparrow. Butterflies fluttering about included Western Tiger Swallowtail, California Ringlet and Variable Checkerspot. Enjoy venturing into oak woodlands to watch and listen to birds and other wildlife? With amazing partners like Learning Among the Oaks and Audubon, we hope to offer this as a special 4-H Y.E.S. Event in years to come! Keep an eye on the calendar for next spring. 4-H CLUB NEWS Cal Poly Hosts the Cerro Alto Rabbit Show The Cerro Alto Rabbit Project was held at the Cal Poly Farm Shop on Saturday, April 2, 2016. The show was ARBA sanctioned and a double youth rabbit show. It was sponsored by the Central Valley Rabbit Breeders Association. 4-H rabbit project groups throughout the Central Coast, participated in the showmanship category. The beauty category was open to all youth with registered rabbits. Congratulations to Morro Bay 4-H member, Julianna J. Julianna placed 4 th in the Showmanship category. Submitted by Julianna J., Morro Bay 4-H Reporter Morro Bay 4-H to hold Farm Olympics Members of Morro Bay 4-H have been planning what promises to be a Fun filled day for family and friends, at the Morro Bay 4-H Farm. There will be a variety of games, a community service project, and a judging event. Participants will also enjoy a pulled-pork lunch. Please come join the fun! The event will run from 12:00-4:00pm on May 15, 2016. The farm is located on Chorro Creek Road, off of Highway I, in Morro Bay. It was held at the Mustang Bowling Alley on the Cal Poly campus. Members and their families enjoyed pizza after a fun time competing in bowling. 11

4-H CLUB NEWS Estrella 4-H Easter Party Every year Estrella 4-H gives three parties for the residents of Vineyard Health Center: Halloween, Christmas and Easter. On March 19, Estrella 4-H threw an Easter Party for them. We passed out treats and drinks. We wanted to let them know we all love them. Many were unable to attend the party so we went around to all the rooms to wish them a happy Easter. The rest of us stayed at the party and made new friends. 4-H CLUB NEWS Breakfast Burritos for The Prado Day Center! On March 22nd under the project leader Jen M., members of the Canyon Country 4-H had a blast assembling 132 breakfast burritos to help those that are homeless in San Luis Obispo County. Hundreds of people are homeless and many of the homeless participants at the Prado Day Center are women and children. The center is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm everyday of the year and provides a safe haven for those in need along with other services that they may be in need of. Submitted by: Tatiann G. Canyon Country Food and Nutrition Group made over 125 delicious breakfast burritos at their March monthly meeting for the Prado Day Center in SLO. The breakfast burritos were made from donations from the members and delivered by our leader, Jen and her daughters Alex and Sydney. 13

4-H CLUB NEWS EL CAMINO 4-H: The Pig Group went to level testing and shared with the group the difference between each ear tag, each breed, and vaccination. Submitted by: Gina M. Member Aaliyah A. from El Camino 4-H Rabbit group went on April 2, 2016 to the Cerro Alto Rabbit Show. She showed her Jersey Wooley doe and Jersey Wooley buck. Sectional Presentation Day - 4-H CLUB NEWS On February 26th, we had five members from Nipomo 4-H give presentations at the Sectional Presentation Day, held in Los Alamos. Ashley R, Leila M., Emma C., Maycee M., and Fiona S. all received Gold and will be going on to the State Presentation Day at U.C. Davis on May 28, 2016.
