2002 VILLANOVA MEN S LACROSSE GAME NOTES VILLANOVA WILDCATS AT HOFSTRA PRIDE TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002 7:00 P.M. LAST TIME OUT WILDCATS DOMINATE SAINT JOSEPH S IN SEASON OPENER Villanova opened the 2002 season with a convincing 19-7 victory over cross-town rival St. Joseph's University. Eight different Wildcats scored in the first three quarters of play as Villanova jumped out to a 13-1 lead. Wildcat seniors, Peter Franchetti and Mike Holloway led the effort with three goals apiece. Freshman goalie Dan Biser shook off the butterflies in his first collegiate game, and provided the team with a four saves, allowing only one goal in 45 minutes of play. Senior Justin Marks also contributed two goals and two assists. With the win, Coach Mark's improves his all-time record against the Hawks to 8-1. The 12-goal victory is the largest margin of victory since Villanova topped Air Force, 18-4, on April 20, 2000. UP NEXT VILLANOVA WILL HOST DREXEL IN HOME-OPENER On Saturday, Mar. 9, Villanova will host area-rival Drexel at Villanova Stadium in a Colonial Athletic Association contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be the first men s lacrosse game on the Stadium s new turf surface, AstroPlay. Last year the Dragons prevented a Wildcat comeback and held on for an 8-7 victory at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Head coach Randy Marks holds a 12-7 edge in the series against Drexel with the last victory coming during the 2000 season. WILDCATS-PRIDE SERIES INFO Villanova and Hofstra have only met two previous times with the series tied at 1-1. The first meeting between the schools took place in 1988, where a powerful Pride traveled to Villanova and handed the Wildcats a 13-8 loss. The second meeting came only a year later in 1999 at Hempstead, N.Y., where Villanova returned the favor with a 12-9 win. Villanova enters the game riding a four-game win streak that dates back to Apr. 25 of last season. During the stretch the Wildcats defeated Pennsylvania (10-9, OT), Marist (13-9), Denver (9-4) and Saint Joseph s (19-7). 2002 DIVISION I TOP 25 PRESEASON COACHES POLL ( ) - First place votes 1. NEW YORK STATE OF MIND Head Coach Randy Marks announced that the Wildcats will travel to Hempstead, N.Y., for the Wildcats match-up with 2001 NCAA Quarterfinalist, Hofstra, on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m. The game has been moved to Hofstra Stadium due to the current turf construction at Villanova Stadium. CATS OPEN CAA PLAY The Wildcat s contest against Hofstra will be Villanova s first Colonial Athletic Association action this season. The Wildcats played the inaugural game for the CAA last season with Loyola defeating Villanova 17-10. The CAA is recognized as one of the toughest men s lacrosse conferences in the nation. Along with Villanova and Hofstra, the CAA is also home to Delaware, Loyola, Sacred Heart and Towson. O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU Two Villanova seniors will have the benefit of playing along side their younger brother this season. Once again senior Justin Marks will join his brother Brian Marks on attack. The Marks brothers combined to tally 41 goals and 32 assists last season and have picked up right where they left off. In the season opener, the two combined for three goals and five assists for eight points. The older brother of Justin and Brian, David Marks, will be on the sidelines as an assistant coach in his third season. Another brother combo joins the Wildcats this year: senior Mike Holloway and freshman Pat Holloway. GAINING R-E-S-P-E-C-T Following a 2001 season in which the Wildcats posted an 8-6 record, Villanova earned national recognition at the season s end with their second straight Top- 25 finish in the STX/USILA Coaches Poll. Three consecutive victories, including a 10-9 victory over No. 19 Pennsylvania, vaulted Villanova to a season end No. 20 national ranking in 2001. The No. 20 ranking ties the highest in the history of the program. The Wildcats earned a No. 20 ranking during the 1991 season. To the left is a listing of the 2002 Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll. www.villanova.com

2002 VILLANOVA MEN S LACROSSE GAME NOTES VILLANOVA WILDCATS AT HOFSTRA PRIDE TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002 7:00 P.M. ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE Coach Marks has always challenged his teams by playing the best competition available. This becomes more apparent to the public eye as Villanova joined the CAA. The Wildcats have four teams on their 2002 schedule ranked in the Top-10 in the 2002 Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll: No. 3 Johns Hopkins, No. 4 Towson, No. 8 Loyola, and No. 10 Hofstra. Villanova will also face No. 21 Delaware in its season finale. According to LaxPower.com s preseason strength of schedule poll, the Wildcats schedule was ranked as the 30 th toughest schedule. CLOSING ON THE CENTURY MARK After a four-point performance is Villanova s season-opener, junior Brian Marks is just six points shy of recording his 100 th career point. During his career, Brian has started every game (29) and recorded 94 career-points on 43 goals and 51 assists. Marks averages 3.24 points per game in a Wildcat uniform. Brian Marks has more career-points than any other player on the active roster. ALL-AMERICAN CANDIDATES This year s Villanova roster boasts four legitimate All-American Candidates in seniors Chris Bowman and Michael Holloway and two juniors Owen Corso and Brian Marks. All four players are coming of sensational 2001 seasons and hope to build on their success. Bowman and Corso will lead the Wildcat defensive unit. Bowman has started 41 games during his first three years at Villanova and anchored a defense last year that allowed only 8.64 goals per game, ranked 14 th nationally. Corso, Villanova s top long-stick midfielder, led the Cats last year with 70 groundballs. On the offensive end Holloway and Marks will lead the surge. Marks is the leading returning scorer from last season with 53 points. Holloway, the top-scoring midfielder last year, scored 22 goals along with 17 assists (39 points). 2002 VILLANOVA MEN S LACROSSE GAME SUMMARIES GAME #1 FEBRUARY 24, 2002 VILLANOVA 19, SAINT JOSEPH S 7 PHILADELPHIA, PA. FINNESEY FIELD PHILADELPHIA, PA. ----- The Villanova men s lacrosse team cruised to a 19-7 victory over Saint Joseph s in the 2002 seasonopener on Sunday, Feb. 24. Seniors Peter Franchetti (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Mike Holloway (Malvern, Pa./ Malvern Prep) paced the Wildcats with three goals apiece. With the win, Villanova improves to 1-0 on the year, as Saint Joseph s falls to 0-2 overall. Villanova wasted little time establishing its offensive presence as the Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Six different players scored for the Wildcats in the opening quarter and sophomore Richie Kratz (Succasunna, N.J./Delbarton) chipped in with two assists. Saint Joseph s Matt Muller scored the first and only goal of the half for the Hawks in the 18 th minute of play beating Villanova goalkeeper Dan Biser (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin). In his collegiate debut, Biser allowed only one goal in 45 minutes of play while making four saves. Holloway scored his second goal of the afternoon and the Wildcats lone goal of the second quarter to give Villanova a 7-1 advantage at intermission. Sophomore Matt Lucas (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) continued Villanova s offensive rampage in the second half scoring the first of his team s six third quarter goals just 46 seconds into the quarter. The Wildcats blew the game open and grabbed a 13-1 lead after three quarters. Franchetti scored two of his three goals in the quarter. Saint Joseph s cut Villanova s lead to 15-4 with 6:41 remaining in the contest, but Villanova erased any hopes of a Hawks comeback by scoring four unanswered goals en route to a 19-7 win. The win marks the second year in a row that the Wildcats have defeated the Hawks in their season opener. Last season, Villanova clipped the Hawks 12-6. Villanova head coach Randy Marks improves to 7-1 all-time against Saint Joseph s. Four Villanova freshmen recorded their first points as a Wildcat highlighted by a two-goal performance from Marc Creegan (West Babylon, N.Y./St. Anthony s) and Dan Fanelli (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Also making an immediate impact was Joe Scanlon (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), who contributed two assists, and Nick Romeo (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony s), who added one assist. Villanova will return to action on Tuesday, March 5, when they travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to face 2001 NCAA Quarterfinalist, Hofstra, in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up.
