Coaches tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) Rod Reed Head Coach 8th Season Overall Record: 43-37 OVC Record: 22-30 Rod Reed enters his eighth season at the helm of the Tennessee State football program after being named head coach on December 18, 2009. He served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator during the 2009 season. Reed experienced immediate success as a head coach, leading the Tigers to a win in his debut game, 27-14, over Alabama A&M on Sept. 4, 2010 in the John Merritt Classic. He also broke an eight-game losing streak to Florida A&M, downing the Rattlers, 29-18, in the Atlanta Classic. Reed coached six players to All-OVC Teams including safety Eugene Clifford who also was a Sports Network, Phil Steele and BOXTOROW All-American. The Tigers increased their win total in their second season under Reed and finished the 2011 season on a hot streak, winning four of their last six games. The stretch included a, 42-40, upset win at No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech on Oct. 15. Reed produced even more All-OVC players in year two, as seven made postseason squads. Two more defenders garnered All-American honors under Reed s tutelage in linebacker Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. He also helped Lamar Divens and Sidney Tarver ink NFL contracts. The Big Blue continued its success in 2012 by rattling off seven straight victories to open the season. The Tigers finished the year with an 8-3 record, its best since 2001. The performance earned TSU HBCU Program of the Year honors by HBCU Huddle. Several players earned postseason accolades including running back Trabis Ward who was named to the College Sports All-American Team after running for 1,460 yards and 15 touchdowns. Three more Tigers were Sheridan All-Americans including Sherman Carter who signed an NFL deal with fellow offensive lineman Rogers Gaines following suit. Reed turned in his finest season to date in 2013, as the Tigers finished 10-4 and won a FCS Playoff Game for the first time since 1986. It capped an impressive run in which Reed improved his club s win total by at least two in each of his first four campaigns. TSU won its first HBCU National Championship since 1982 and the team s shutout win over Butler in the first round of the playoffs was the first victory for the OVC in postseason play in nearly 30 years. A school record 12 Tigers were chosen to the league s all-conference teams at season s end and Kadeem Edwards (143rd) and Demetrius Rhaney (250th) were selected in the NFL Draft. In 2014, Reed s defense ranked inside the top-10 for the third straight season. Middle linebacker Nick Thrasher tallied 128 stops on the season, which was sixth-most in a single-season in school history and the highest total for a Tiger since 1991. Thrasher also moved up to second-place in tackles in the TSU record book over the course of the season, finishing with 358. Quarterback Mike German threw for 2,846 yards on the year, helping him break the 34 year old school-mark with 8,664 career yards. After breaking a streak of three consecutive non-losing seasons in 2015, the Tigers bounced back to finish 7-4 in 2016. TSU reemerged as one of the top teams in the OVC under Reed with nine all-conference players and six All-Americans. The offense led the OVC in points scored and finished second in total offense. Cornerback Ezra Robinson and offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker both earned First Team All-OVC selections, All-American status and were invited to play in the Reese s Senior Bowl. The duo also participated in the NFL combine and signed free agent contracts. Reed has coached a total of 28 All-Americans and 62 All-OVC Players in his seven seasons as a head coach and has staked a 43-37 record. He began coaching at TSU in 2003 and served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. At the conclusion of the season in which Reed returned to the TSU sideline, the Tigers led the OVC in total defense for the first time in school history. The defense accomplished the same feat in 2008 finishing at the top of the OVC in total defense. A keen recruiter as an assistant, Reed was responsible for bringing several notable key players into the TSU program. Reed is noted for recruiting Javarris Williams (2009 seven-round draft pick, Kansas City Chiefs), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (2008 first-round draft pick, Arizona Cardinals), Shaun Richardson, Lamar Divens (Baltimore Ravens, 2008) and Corneilus Lewis. He has also coached All-America and professional player, Jamar Landrom (Jacksonville Jaguars). Reed was a four-year letter winner for the TSU Tigers from 1984-1988. He capped off his career by being named Sheridan All-America his senior season. He set the Tiger record for career tackles from his linebacker slot and in 1987, he set the single season record for tackles with 197. He helped lead the Tigers to the second round of the 1986 Division I-AA playoffs and was selected as Defensive MVP in 1987 and 1988. Following completion of his bachelor s degree, Reed entered the coaching profession. He held positions at Prairie View A&M (Linebackers, 2001), Bethune-Cookman University (Linebackers, 92-95), and Seabreeze High School (DC, 96-00) in Daytona Beach, Fla. Within those positions he coached five first-team all-conference linebackers and a pair of All-Americans. Before coming to TSU, Reed previously coached at East Texas Baptist College (00-03) in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He served as defensive coordinator for East Texas Baptist, which launched its football program during the 2000 season. The 2002 Texas Baptist defense ranked second in their conference in scoring defense and third in rushing defense. The team did not allow points in either the first or third periods through the first eight games in 2002. Reed is the son of Robert Reed, Jr., an All-America offensive guard for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964 who later played professionally for the Washington Redskins. Reed is the university s Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative and in 2009 he participated in the NCAA Football Coaches Academy. He and his wife, Tamika, are the parents of four children, Terry, Takara, Briah, and Marcel. Sgt. York Trophy tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) In July 2007, the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference announced the creation of the Sergeant York Trophy which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee Austin Peay State University, University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technological University. The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. In a close race, Tennessee State and Austin Peay shared the inaugural award, finishing with identical 2-1 records in 2007. Tennessee State took the trophy home thanks to a one-point victory in overtime over the Governors; that game was decided by a block extra point by NFL First Round Draft Pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Tigers repeated as champions in 2008, winning all three of its Sgt. York games. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2 nd battalion, 328 th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war, York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today. York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) Game 1 Tennessee State 17, Georgia State 10 Quotes and Notes Junior Offensive Tackle Christian Morris - On beating an FBS Team First of all, this is a huge win. We re an FCS team, and we came out there and beat an FBS team. They were very talented, but we handled business. - On the offensive line The Offensive line played phenomenal tonight. We had a couple mishaps, but we played phenomenal. Senior Linebacker Chris Collins - On winning the opener It means a lot to the team. We felt like we wanted to start off the season strong. We feel like we played a great defensive game. Offensively, we played well too. I feel like we played a great game and now we just have to get ready for Jackson State. - On beating an FBS Team I don t think many people outside of us thought we would win, but it s good to prove people wrong. In our heart, we felt like we re the best, so we expect to do things like that. Coming into this game, I wanted to do it for the alumni and for our school. The alumni are what started this. Before the game, I tweeted, keep the tradition alive, and that s what we wanted to do. - On scoring a touchdown That was my first touchdown so I was really excited, but I have to give the credit to Sabree (Curtis) for getting us down there in the first place, and the line for blocking as well as they did. Treon (Harris) had a great drive, and it just played out for us. Freshman Safety Vincent Sellers - On getting the win It feels good. It s been a long camp, and we ve been working very hard. Coach (Garry) Fisher has been on us every single day and it got us better. I just want to thank God because it s a true blessing. - On winning his first college game I have my mom and dad here supporting me. They ve been waiting to see me play my first college game. 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) Game 2 Tennessee State 17, Jackson State 15 Quotes and Notes Defensive Coordinator Garry Fisher - On what he liked from the defense They just fought. That was the biggest thing. They fought hard all night. No matter what the situation was, they rose up to the occasion. We gave up some yards and they got into the red zone a couple times, but we were able to hold them to field goals, which was huge for us tonight. - On bending but not breaking I thought we tackled well. They hit us with a couple of plays. Their passing attack was on point, so they found some creases in our defense, and they drove down there, but we work on red zone defense every day. We were able to hold them to field goals and come up with a big interception. - On the defense coming up big We take pride as a team. No matter how the game goes, we have to find a way to stop the other team s offense. Both defenses played well but at the end of the night, our defense outplayed theirs. It being a rivalry game and me being from Memphis, you never want to come back home and lose a game whether it s conference or non-conference. It was very big for us to come out here and get a win. I m proud of my team. The defense really stepped up for us. The offense wasn t really clicking like how we expected, but we know it s early in the season. - On the punt return for a touchdown It was a designed left return. As soon as I caught the ball I saw a lot of white jerseys on the left, so I knew it was going to be a good return. As soon as I started to run, I just took advantage of it and took it to the endzone. Junior Safety Laquarius Cook - On being 2-0 It s big. The team came out playing hard and kept our confidence up. The win was good for us. - On winning with room for improvement It lets us know that if we get to hitting on all cylinders, that we ll be running and we ll be unstoppable. Senior Defensive Lineman Jason Morrow - On being 2-0 It s a great feeling to be 2-0, but it s still the beginning of the season. We still have a long road ahead of us. We can t look too far ahead in the season. - On the positives of the defense We just kept fighting. That s one thing Coach Fisher told us. You don t quit. If everything is going wrong, you still don t quit. You don t hold your head down. You just keep fighting, and that s what we did tonight, and that s a big reason why we won tonight. I m going to say what I said last week, it s still early in the season. We still have to go out there and keep working because we still have a long road ahead of us. We ve got a lot of teams that we need to beat on our schedule. - On blocking the kicks Being relentless and coming off the ball. Not taking no for an answer. Points are points. We have to do whatever we can to keep the offense off the board. - On how he blocked the kicks It was just in the moment. I just did what I was taught. I just wanted to get back there and make something happen. Senior Wide Receiver Patrick Smith - On the play of the offense We stepped it up, especially after the first two games. In the first half, we started off slowly, but we saw that we could do what we wanted to do. We picked it up in the second half. As we keep going on throughout the season, especially going into conference play, we need to keep getting better. Tennessee State (3-0) vs. Florida A&M (1-2) Date: Sep 17, 2017 Site: Tampa, Fla Stadium: Raymond James Attendance: 17102 - On being 3-0 It s very important to be 3-0 right now. It builds confidence in the team. It helps you think about being 4-0, 5-0 and take it one game at a time. We feel like the only people who can stop us is us. You can tell from this game. We had a lot of mistakes that took us back on offense, but once we get it together, we ll be very, very explosive and hard to stop. Senior Defensive Lineman Latrelle Lee - On the defense We missed a couple tackles here and there. We weren t as precise and fundamentally sound as we ve been, but we played a good game and got the win. - On being undefeated through three games That s big. Just mentally being 3-0 is always a good thing. To be undefeated heading into conference and keeping that streak alive, we want to keep it going. - On beating Florida A&M It s always good to beat your rivals. It s a storied rivalry, so it s great to get the win. Junior Quarterback Treon Harris - On the success of the offense Controlling the line of scrimmage was big. We controlled the line of scrimmage from the offensive line. They did a great job of moving their guys out of the way to create some lanes to run the ball and throw the ball. - On beating FAMU It means a lot. Nobody wants to leave the stadium with a loss in a classic game and a rivalry game like this. We prepared all week and we got better. 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) Game 8 Tennessee State 26, Tennessee Tech 30 Quotes and Notes Wide Receiver Steven Newbold - On the offense I thought we did some really good things. We capitalized on the mistakes, so the offense did pretty good today. - On the connection with Michael Hughes The connection got stronger as the season went on. We just need more chemistry though. - On moving on The best thing we can do is just keep our head up and just try to keep winning on and finish the season strong. Quarterback Michael Hughes - On three touchdown passes to Patrick Smith Pat is definitely one of the best receivers in the country. We worked a lot in the offseason, and today we finally got to connect. He got open and he saw what I was seeing. We connected, and we scored. It was great to see him catch a few touchdowns today. We talk a lot. We communicate on the field. I m proud Newbold got seven catches. We ve still got a lot of work to do. There was some stuff we missed, but it s only up from here. Defensive End Ebo Ogundeko - On the defense I feel like we could have played a lot better. We started off pretty slow and it s all up to us as the players to lock in and start off fast. We need to finish strong as well. We started to play better in the beginning of the second quarter, but we just need to play better as a defense and just finish out the season strong. - On the turnovers forced by the defense Those are big. Our coaches always emphasize on getting turnovers. Coach (Garry) Fisher and Coach (Rod) Reed both put an emphasis on getting turnovers. 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) Game 9 Tennessee State 60, Virginia University Lynchburg 0 Quotes and Notes Sophomore Quarterback Michael Hughes (Nashville, Tenn.) -On seeing the field I ve been getting more comfortable with the game. The receivers and I are connecting a little more, so it s been great. -On the game It was a great opportunity to get better that s what I did, that s what the whole team did. Hopefully we carry that on next week. -On the Ronnie Killings touchdown Ronnie is definitely great. He s a good guy to come off the bench and go to. When he comes in, I feel just as comfortable with him as when Steve and Pat are in. It felt good to give him one. Sophomore Wide Receiver Ronnie Killings -On first touchdown at TSU It felt great. It felt like a long time coming, but it felt great to finally get into the end zone. I knew I was going to have the opportunity to get into the end zone, it just depended on if I was going to get the ball or not. Once I saw the ball and that I had the right position on the defender, I just went up for the ball and made the play. Sophomore Linebacker Dante Ferguson, Jr. (Lithonia, Ga.) -On the game Today was a good day for us defensively and offensively as a whole. We ran up the scoreboard, got defensive plays all across the board. Game 9 Nov. 4, 2017 William J. Hale Stadium (7.487) Nashville, Tenn. 1 2 3 4 Final Virginia U. 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State at Jacksonville State (Nov. 16, 2017) Game 10 Tennessee State 23, Southeast Missouri 20 Quotes and Notes Head Coach Rod Reed -On the game We talked in pre-game about the things we needed to do to be successful, and the main thing was to protect the football, dominate on our kicking game and dominate on both sides of the lines of scrimmage win at the offense line, win at the defensive line and win at the line of scrimmage. Out guys came out and did that. We played hard. With the exception of a few big plays we gave up defensively, we did extremely well. Newbold gave us a shot when we needed it, giving us a good field position to make plays. L. Cook makes the checks in the secondary. SEMO does a lot in the secondary with motions and shifts and we did a good job defensively. Coach Fisher had a great game plan for this team, as did Coach Parker. Senior Kick Lane Clark -On the game It was intense. It came all the way down to the end. Both sides of the ball played hard and special teams was a big part of the game today. Protection has been doing really well. Each day we re going to work special teams like we always do, hopefully I ll be kicking a lot of PATs instead of field goals. Sophomore Quarterback Michael Hughes -On the offense It started off a little rough. I threw a pick six, but eventually we bounced back and put up some more points on the scoreboard. We came out the win. -On pass options Today was actually Steven Newbold. I think they were trying to double-team Pat because of what he s produced in the past, but they left Steve 1-on-1 on the backside a lot, so I went to him and made big plays.
