SILING PEPOD a design by William C ates Construction Notes and Suggested uilding Sequence GENERL: To the uilder: It is assumed that you already know how to work with epoxy and fiberglass cloth, and that you have built at least one wooden boat start to finish. I would not attempt to build the Sailing Peapod as a first boat. I can supply detailed procedure sheets for any part of the construction. Email me at: wmbatesdesign@gmail.com for assistance. SCRFING PLYWOOD The hull planks can be laid out in two sections to make scarfing easier. Sheets -1 and-2 give the offsets for the two pairs of planks and the hull bottom. Remember that you will need two of each plank, one each for the port and starboard sides of the boat. lways cut your planks out of 2 layers of plywood at a time, ensuring they will be identical. For the Hull ottom, cut two x sheets of 6mm okoume in half lengthwise, then plane scarfs into one end of each 2 wide piece.glue two sections together with thickened epoxy to make one long sheet 16 feet long. Make up a second 2 x 16 foot sheet and lay one on top of the other. Screw together temporarily at the corners to keep the layers from shifting. Layout the hull bottom shape on the plywood, using the plan offsets. To make layout a bit easier, match up the factory edges of the plywood sheets on one side and use that straight edge as a baseline during layout. For the Hull Planking, follow the above procedure, but make the plywood sheets as follows; 2 inches wide for the planks on Sheet -1, and 2 wide for the planks on Sheet -2. TRCING ND CUTTING OUT PLYWOOD SHPES Cut out the paper pattern, leaving about ¼ extra all around
Lay pattern on plywood and tape securely Using a punch or nail, make small holes along the pattern line, every inch or so Connect the holes with a fair pencil line Cut out the shape; smooth the edges before coating with epoxy Note: Recommend you lightly sand all parts after cutting out and coat with epoxy on both sides and all edges before assembly.
