Dear ASCE Student Chapter Members, The University of New Mexico ASCE Student Chapter is pleased to invite you to the 2015 Rocky Mountain Regional Student Conference. We are excited to be hosting this conference and hope that everyone will be able to compete in this event. This is the first of three mailers that will be sent to each school. Please read this mailer carefully as it contains important and timely details regarding preparations for attending the conference and competition April 9-11, 2015. Be sure to keep this document for your records. All mailers will be sent via email and can also be downloaded from the UNM conference website: www.unm.edu/~asce/. Deadlines for chapter s wanting to participate in this year s ASCE Conference are listed in this mailer under Deadlines. Receipt confirmation of this e-mail should be completed no later than Sunday, November 30, 2014. Information about how to send it to us is on subsequent pages. Registration is $250 per school and $60 per student. School registration form is due to ASCE UNM postmarked no later than December 15, 2014. Part I EACH student that plans on attending the 44th Annual Rocky Mountain Region Conference in Albuquerque, NM on April 9-11, 2015 must submit this form completed to UNM by January 19, 2015. Please follow the delivery methods described on the Deadlines page. The student registration fee of $60 must be post marked no later than February 21, 2015. Late registration: Any registrations postmarked later than February 21, 2015 must pay an additional fee of $10 (for a total of $70 registration fee). Any students, faculty, or friends that arrive at the conference without pre-registering, and wanting to either participate in events or banquet, must pay the late registration fee at check-in. Reservations WILL NOT be made for visiting schools by UNM. However, we have compiled a list of hotels that are close to the University of New Mexico campus. A map is included as to their location in relation to the campus and the awards banquet. If you have questions about hotel accommodations please contact the specific hotel. Also, there will be a zero tolerance to any alcohol use during these events. CANstruction This event, held on Thursday evening is the only non-point event and will be used as a chance for participants, judges, and event attendees to meet before the competition begins. There will be more information in subsequent mailers about this event that will precede dinner on the night of April 9, 2015. Start collecting cans to donate now. Chapter Presentations A student member, or members, of each chapter will present for about 5 minutes of their chapter s activity throughout the last year. PowerPoint presentations may include but are not limited to how many active members they have, fundraising their chapter did, field trips, guest speakers, and community service. Steel Bridge Competition The aesthetics and poster presentation, timed build, and loading test will be on Friday morning, April 10th. This event will take place in UNM s Johnson Gym, see campus map on subsequent page. Pay special attention to rules clarification. Technical Paper The topic for the 44th Annual ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference is: Limiting the number of credits needed to graduate with a bachelors in civil engineering from an accredited university with the desired outcome of more master s degrees in civil engineering. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? Each student chapter will present their paper on the afternoon of April 10th. This will be after lunch so each student has the opportunity to attend. The presentations will be held in the Centennial Engineering Building where the UNM Civil Engineering Department is located, see campus map on subsequent page. Non-Technical Paper It is recommended that this paper be the Daniel W. Mead Paper. This event will be in the Science Math and Learning Center (SMLC), location will be provided in subsequent mailers. This event will be in the Centennial Engineering building, see campus map below. Mystery design This portion of the event will exercise the ability of engineers to think on their feet, work under pressure, and produce a useable product in a short period of time. This event will be in the Centennial Engineering building, see campus map below. The rules and topic for the Mystery Design will be revealed to participants at the event start time. Business Meeting This meeting is for all presidents of student chapters. The purpose is to review this year s conference as well as address the next year s competition. Canoe Presentations Each chapter discusses the design, construction, and process of their canoe entry to the panel of judges and spectators on Johnson Field, April 10, 2015. Concrete Canoe Competition Aesthetics for all canoe entries will be judged the morning of Friday, April 10th, on the UNM Johnson Field. The Concrete Canoe races and swamp tests will be held on Saturday, April 11th at Cochiti Lake, approximately 50 miles north of the UNM campus. It is recommended that each chapter budget gas for this distance to haul canoes and participants into their fundraising campaigns.
