Myrtle Beach Pelicans (43) vs. Lynchburg Hillcats (25) Thursday, April 13, 2017 7:05 p.m. Game No. 8 Home Game No. 1 TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. MiLB.tv MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch App TuneIn LHP Justin Steele (01, 2.25 ERA) vs. RHP Triston McKenzie (10, 1.59 ERA) MYRTLE BEACH LOSES SERIES FINALE 51 The Pelicans offense struggled in a 51 rubber game defeat Wednesday to the Buies Creek Astros. Myrtle Beach s lone run came in the seventh inning. Daniel Spingola tripled with two outs and came in to score on Matt Rose s RBI single. A Tyler Alamo double put runners on second and third, but Buies Creek s Ralph Garza was able to escape the jam without any further damage. The Astros scored the game s first run on Christian Correa s RBI ground out in the second before tallying three scores in the fifth. Akeem Bostick yielded just two hits in six shutout frames for Buies Creek. THE CREEK DON T RISE A 51 loss in Wednesday s rubber match at Buies Creek snapped quite an impressive streak for Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans had won five sets in a row and 10 of their last 11 series dating back to August 1, 2016. Perhaps the Birds most impressive recent run came in 2014, when they went 10 sets in a row without a series loss. Last year s squad going as many as nine straight before faltering. NOT ONE, ALREADY TWO, MAYBE THREE? Myrtle Beach is coming off their second straight Carolina League championship, marking the first time the circuit has had a team win backtoback titles since the WinstonSalem Spirits, who were also a Cubs affiliate at the time, did so in the 1985 and 1986 seasons. Should they win a third consecutive Mills Cup Championship, they would be the first team in Carolina League history, which dates back to the 1945 season, to win three straight titles. HELLO, IT S ME After their sevengame road trip to begin the season, Myrtle Beach returns to TicketReturn.Com Field on Thursday for their 2017 opener. The Birds will host a pair of familiar foes in their first homestand: Lynchburg and Buies Creek their first two opponents of the 2017 regular season. Repetitively, they ll host the Hillcats for four contests before the Astros jet in for three games. This early scheduling quirk is one the Pelicans should get used to: The Birds play 11 of their 24 games in April against the Hillcats. Myrtle Beach also hosts Lynchburg from May 1214 before not seeing the Hillcats for the rest of the season. All told, 28 of the Pelicans first 41 games come against either Lynchburg or Buies Creek. SEINFELD, FOUR (AND TWO) Despite a Carolina Leaguehigh six consecutive playoff appearances, fast starts have not been Myrtle Beach s forte. However, the Pelicans have achieved a strong beginning to a campaign not seen for a while in the Grand Strand. For one, the Birds started 31 for the first time since 2011. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach beat Buies Creek 73 on Tuesday, giving the Pelicans their first 42 beginning since 2005. In falling to Buies Creek 61 on Wednesday, Myrtle Beach again failed to initiate a season with a 52 mark since at least the 2004 campaign. DON T PUSH THE PANIC BUTTON YET Myrtle Beach s offense has struggled to begin the season, with the Pelicans 21 runs tying for eighth place in the 10team circuit. Despite Myrtle Beach averaging a paltry 3.0 runs per game, roughly half of Down East and Salem s leagueleading 5.9 tally per contest, there is optimism for the Pelicans offense. Right off the bat, the small sample size of seven games is much too early to make a determination of true talent level. Second, most of the Birds offense hails from a LowA South Bend club that finished among the top three clubs in the 16team Midwest League in average (.266), onbase percentage (.333), slugging percentage (.374), OPS (.708) and runs (633). The third reason the Birds offense should come around simply relates to luck: Myrtle Beach s batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just.262, well below the yearly league average of.300. That number almost certainly will regress back towards the mean as the season wears on, meaning the Pelicans offense should start scoring more runs as that happens. PELICAN POINTS Dating back to last season, Pelicans reliever Jordan Minch has gone 17 appearances without allowing a run (18.1 IP, 11 H, 15 K, 7 BB). The last time the southpaw surrendered a tally was on May 24, 2016... Tyler Alamo has two hits in each of his last three games (6for12,.500, 2 2B, HR, RBI, 3 R)... No Myrtle Beach starter has yielded more than three earned runs in an outing so far. The Pelicans rotation has a 3.27 ERA through their first seven games... The Birds bullpen has also been strong, posting an even 2.00 ERA through the first week of the campaign. Myrtle Beach s 4028 (.588) home record in 2016 was the secondbest of any squad in the Carolina League. UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP.
