Myrtle Beach Pelicans (31) at Buies Creek Astros (40) Monday, April 10, 2017 7:00 p.m. Game No. 5 Road Game No. 5 Jim Perry Stadium Lillington, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch App TuneIn RHP Casey Bloomquist (00, 0.00 ERA) vs. LHP Framber Valdez (00, 0.00 ERA) PELICANS HOLD OFF HILLCATS TO WIN SERIES Matt Rose finished a triple shy of the cycle while driving in three, and the Pelicans held off a pair of late charges from Lynchburg Sunday to knock off the Hillcats 43 and win the fourgame series. Rose launched a solo home run to begin the second against Hillcats starter Jared Robinson. Carlos Sepulveda chipped in with an RBI single later in the inning to make it 20. Rose knocked in a couple more runs with a single in the fifth inning. However, Lynchburg scored a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth, bringing the goahead runs to the plate in both those frames, only for Scott Effross to earn his second save of the season. SEINFELD, FOUR (AND ONE)? Myrtle Beach s 43 victory over Lynchburg on Sunday pushed the Pelicans record to 31 the first time since 2011 that the Birds have won three of their first four games of the season. The Pelicans lost 61 to Lynchburg on Saturday to avoid their first 30 start since 2010. Interestingly, Myrtle Beach has started a year 30 just twice in their recorded history (through 2005). However, in both of those instances, 2010 and 2005, the club finished the year in last place. The Pelicans have not started a season 41 since at least the 2004 campaign. KEEPING IT ROLLING With their 43 victory Sunday over Lynchburg, the Pelicans took three out of four games from the Hillcats to win the first series of the 2017 season. Thus, Myrtle Beach has now won five sets in a row and 10 of their last 11 series dating back to August 1, 2016. The 2014 Pelicans went 10 sets in a row without a series loss, with last year s squad going as many as nine straight before faltering. NOT ONE, ALREADY TWO, MAYBE THREE? Myrtle Beach is coming off their second straight Carolina League championship, marking the first time the circuit has had a team win backtoback titles since the WinstonSalem Spirits, who were also a Cubs affiliate at the time, did so in the 1985 and 1986 seasons. What the Pelicans will try to do this year is build on that history: Should they win a third consecutive Mills Cup Championship, they would be the first team in Carolina League history, which dates back to the 1945 season, to win three straight titles. FLYING THE W OFTEN Thanks to their 2016 second half Southern Division Championship, Myrtle Beach has now won at least one division title in four straight seasons, and five out of their last six campaigns. The Pelicans also earned winning records in both the first and second halves of the 2016 season, as well as a winning overall campaign, to continue a pair of different impressive runs. The last time the Birds had a losing half was the second part of the 2011 campaign, when they went 3238. Every other CL club has suffered through at least one losing half since 2015. Meanwhile, the Pelicans have now posted six consecutive overall winning seasons dating back to 2010, when they finished a woeful 5882 (.414). No other team in the circuit can trace their last losing season back past 2014. SIX TOP 30 CUBS PROSPECTS COME TO MYRTLE Twenty percent of the Cubs Top 30 prospects will begin the season with the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach. RHP Oscar De La Cruz (No. 5 by Baseball America), RHP Thomas Hatch (No. 12 by MLB.com) and LHP Justin Steele (No. 24 by BA) make up threefifths of the Birds starting rotation. Defensively, the Pelicans have a Top 30 prospect at every level of the diamond. P.J. Higgins (No. 22 by BA) should handle the majority of the catching with Carlos Sepulveda (No. 18 by MLB.com) manning second base. Eddy Martinez (No. 11 by both) is a dynamic outfielder who was the Cubs Minor League Player of the Month in July 2016. Both Higgins and Martinez received additional honors from Baseball America, with the former earning Best Defensive Catcher and the latter taking Best Outfield Arm. FLOCKING BACK TO THE NEST Twelve of the 27 members of the Pelicans 2017 Opening Day roster spent time with the club during their 2016 title campaign. The majority of those players actually reside in the bullpen, with Pedro Araujo, Craig Brooks, Scott Effross, Dillon Maples, Jordan Minch, James Norwood, Jeremy Null and Tommy Thorpe all angling to earn innings in relief. The other four Birds to come back to Myrtle Beach in 2017 are catcher Tyler Pearson, infielders Bryant Flete and Jesse Hodges and outfielder Daniel Spingola. None of that quartet played in more than 49 games with Myrtle Beach in their title season a year ago. UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP.
