Tajweed Essentials The definition of Tajweed: To recite every letter correctly, from its place and with all its qualities. The purpose of Tajweed: To recite the Qur an in the,ﷺrasulullah manner it was revealed and recited to for the pleasure of Allah Ta ala. م خ ار ج Makhaarij Definition: Makhraj is the place where the sound of a letter originates. According to Imam Khalil رح, there are a total of 17 Makhaarij (places where the sound originates). Page 6

ز With the tip of the tongue, touching the EDGES of Thanaaya Sufla and a little of Thanaaya Ulya. Thus giving the sound of Z. س a whistle. ش Same as the letter ز but with a sound of Same as the letter ج but with the sound of "SH" as in Sheep. ص mouth. ض Same as the letter س but with a full This is a full mouth letter. Same place as ح but pronounce it with a stress, by going down deeper into the throat and give a squeeze to your throat. غ Pronounced SOFTLY with a full mouth from that part of the throat, nearest to the mouth. And raising the back part of the tongue towards the palate. ف With the edge of Thanaaya Ulya, touching the inner portion of the bottom lip. ق Raising the extreme back part of the tongue, touching the palate and uvula. ك ل Similar to ق but away from the Uvula. With the tip of the tongue, touching the gums of the teeth, which extends from the Dawaahik of one side to the other. Page 11

The rules of Ghunnah Whenever a Meem م has a Tashdeed, make Ghunnah by making a humming sound with the mouth closed for about 2 seconds. Whenever a Noon ن has a Tashdeed, make Ghunnah for about 2 seconds, by making a nasal sound with the front part of the tongue, spreading against the hard palate. Page 14

:ا ظ ه ار Idh-haar If after a noon Saakin or tanween, one of the letters of Idh-haar appear,( ء ه ع ح غ خ ), then Idhhaar will be made by reciting it without any nasal sound or ghunnah. ا ن ع م ت م ن ه م و م ن ا ه ل م ن خ ش ي ة م ن غ ي ر و ت ن ح ت و ن ع ر ش ع ظ ي م ق و م ه اد ا ذا ا ب دا ع ل يما ح ك ي م ا س ف ي ن ةغ ص با و ر ح م ة خ ي ر Page 17

:ا خ ف اء Ikhfaa If after a noon saakin or tanween, the following letters appear, then Ikhfaa will be made. ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق ك Ikhfaa means to make a nasal sound for about 2 seconds, with the front part of the tongue hovering close to the hard palate. و ا ن ت م م ن ث ق ل ت م ن ج ن ت ب ع ض ز خ ر ف ن ا را ذ ات د كا د ك ا فا ن ص ر ن ا غ ف و ر ش ك و ر ل ي ال س و يا ق و ما ض ا ل ي ن س م و ت ط ب اق ا ظ لظ ل ي ل م ح س ن ف ل ه ث م نا ق ل ي ل ع د او ة ك ا ن ه Page 18

:ا د غ ام Idghaam If after Noon Saakin or Tanween, the letters appear, then Idghaam with ghunnah will ي و م ن be made. Idghaam means to join the harkat letter (a letter with zabar, zer or pesh) with the idghaam letter and pronounce it with a nasal sound for about 2 seconds. Also, if after Noon Sakin or Tanween, from the Idghaam letters, a و or ي appears, then. ي or و blend the nasal sound into the sound of و م ن ي ع م ل م ن اد ياي ن اد ي ل ق و م ي ع ل م و ن ر ج الي ح ب و ن م ن و ل ي ج ن ة و ح ر ي را ي و م ئ ذ و اج ف ة ا ل ه و اح د م ن م ا ء ا ي ا ما م ع د و د ت ل و ح م ح ف و ظ خ ير م ن ه ف ل ن ن ز ي د ك م ر س و ل ن ب يا ي و م ئ ذن ا ع م ة ط ل ع ن ض ي ع و و ال د و م او ل د ك ث ي راو ي ه د ي Page 19

:ق ل ب Qalb If after Noon Sakin, a letter ب appears, then the Noon Saakin will change into a Meem Sakin م) ) and it will be read with ghunnah. The ghunnah will be done by making a humming sound with the mouth closed. The ghunnah will be done for about 2 seconds. م ن ب ع د E.g. If after tanween, a letter ب appears, then take away a harkat from the tanween. Then join it with the tiny Meem Saakin and make ghunnah. ن ف س ب م ا ن ف س ب م ا E.g. م ن ب خ ل ا ن ب ي ا ء ا لل م ن ب ق ل ه ا لن س ف ع ا ب الن اص ي ة ق و ل ب ل ي غا ا ب دا ب م ا ا ي ات ب ي ن ات ف ر ش ب ط ا ئ ن ه ا ي و م ئ ذ ب ج ه ن م ا ي ت ب ي ن ت ع ل يم ب ال م ت ق ي ن م ط م ئ ن ب ا ل ي م ان Page 21

The Rules of Meem Saakin There are three rules for Meem Saakin: ا د غ ا م 1. Idghaam Meem Saakin ا خ ف اء 2. Ikhfaa Meem Saakin ا ظ ه ارSaakin 3. Idh-haar Meem Page 22

: ا د غ ا م Idghaam Meem Saakin If after Meem Saakin م,there appears another meem م, then ghunnah will be made by making a humming sound with the mouth closed. The ghunnah will be done for about 2 seconds. و ا ر ج ل ك م م ن ا ن ه م م ع ك م له م م و س لك م م ا م ر س ل و ن ا ل ي ك م ي ا ت ي ن ك م م ن ي : ا خ ف اء Ikhfaa Meem Saakin,ب there appears a Baa,م If after Meem Saakin then ikhfaa will be made by making a humming sound with the mouth closed. The Ikhfaa will be done for 2 seconds. ف ا خ ذ ن ه م ب م ا ل ه م ب ال ب ي ن ت ر س ر ب ه م ب ه م ي ا م ر ه م ب ال م ع ر و ف م اس ب ق ك م ب ه ا ا م ن ت م ب ه Page 23

:ا ظ ه ار Idh-haar Meem Saakin If any other letter besides Baa ب or meem م appears after a Meem Saakin,م then do not make ghunnah. اب له م ث ي ا ن ف س ه م خ ل د و ن ا ن ت م ل ه ا لك م ف ي ه ا م ن س كا ه م ن اس ك و ه ب ط و ن ه م و ال ج ل و د Page 24

Qalqalah ق ل ق ل ه Part 1 Qalqalah means to make a bouncing sound by either: Tapping the tongue against the hard palate. Or tapping the upper part of the lip with the bottom part of the lip. Or tapping the uvula with the extreme back part of the tongue. If any of the following letters ق ط ب ج د have a saakin, Qalqalah will be made. Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the uvula with -ق the extreme back part of the tongue. ن ق ص ا ق س م ب ق ر Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the tongue -ط against the hard palate. ا ط ع م ن ا م ط ل ع ف و س ط ن Page 25

Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the upper part -ب of the lip with the bottom part of the lip. ا ب و ابا ح ب ل س ب قا Make a bouncing sound by tapping the tongue -ج against the hard palate. ف ج ر ت ج ر ي ر ج ع ه Make a bouncing sound by tapping the tongue -د against the hard palate. ل ق د ا د ب ر ل م ي ل د Page 26

Note: While making qalqalah, be sure to not create a harkat sound) (. For example. ف ج ر read as ف ج should not be ر *Part 2 of Qalqalah is in the Chapter of Waqf (Stopping). Page 27

The rules of Raa Part 1- Raa ر prounounced with a full mouth: 1. If a Raa ر has a zabar or pesh, then it will be read with a full mouth. ث م ر ا م ر ر ب ع ت ز ر 2. If a Raa Saakin ر has a zabar or pesh before it, then it will be read with a full mouth. ا ر س ل ا ث ر ن ف ص ر م ر ت اب Note: If there s an empty mouth letter before the Raa Saakin, then upon joining the two letters, blend the sound from empty mouth to full mouth. 3. If a Raa Mu-shaddad ر has a zabar or pesh, then it will be read with a full mouth. ب ر ح ر م ي ف ر ت ق ش ع ر Page 28

Note: If there s an empty mouth letter before the Raa Mu-shaddad, then upon joining the two letters, blend the sound from empty mouth to full mouth. 4. If before a Raa Saakin,ر there is a temporary zer (a zer which was not there from before), then it will be read with a full mouth. ا ر ج ع ي... ا ر ح م ه م ا 5. If before a Raa Saakin ر, there is a zer in the previous word, then it will be read with a full mouth. ر ب ار ج ع و ن ا م ار ت اب و ا ر ب ار ح م ه م ا 6. The Raa Saakin ر in the following four words, will always be read with a full mouth: م ر ص ادا ا ر ص ادا ق ر ط اس ف ر ق ة Page 29

Part 2- Raa ر prounounced with an empty mouth: 7. If a Raa ر has a zer, then it will be read with an empty mouth. ن ذ ر ر ز قا ق ت ر ب وا 8. If a Raa رSaakin has a zer before it, then it will be read with an empty mouth. و ش ا و ر ه م ا ن ذ ر ه م ش ر ب 9. If a Raa Mu-shaddad ر has a zer, then it will be read with an empty mouth. ب ال ب ر و ل ل ر ج ال م ن ش ر Note: If there s a full mouth letter before the Raa Mu-shaddad, then upon joining the two letters, blend the sound from full mouth to empty mouth. Part A: The Symbols of Waqf When the following symbols appear, one should stop completely: ع ط قف م When the following symbols appear, one will have the option to stop or continue without stopping: ص صلے ز When the following symbols appear, one will pause for a moment without breaking the breath: س سكته وقفه stop. This means its preferable not to ق stop. This means its preferable to ج place. This means, one should not stop at that ال Instead, he can stop at a word before or after it. Page 35

Part B: How to make waqf at the end of a word 1. If the last letter of a word has any harakah besides do zabar ) (, kara zabar ) ( or a zabar ا with an alif ) (, it will be removed and replaced with a saakin. ب ل د ب ل د ح س د ح س د ا ح د ا ح د ي خ ر ج ي خ ر ج خ و ف خ و ف 2. If the last letter already has a sakin, Kara zabar, or a zabar with an alif, then there will be no changes while making waqf. ا ع م ال ه م ا ع م ال ه م د س ه ا ل ش تى د س ه ا ل ش تى Page 36

3. If the last letter has a do zabar and an alif, then remove one zabar and use the alif to stretch the last letter. If there is NO alif, then add one. ا ب د ا ا ب دا alif: Example with an ج ز آء ج ز آء ا alif: Example without an 4. If the last letter is a taa marbootah (a round taa), then regardless of what harakah it has, it will be changed into a small haa with a sakin on ق و ه ق و ة top. 5. If the last letter has a tashdeed, then hold on to the last letter for about 1 ½ seconds. م ف ر م ف ر Page 37

The Rules of Madd The meaning of Madd is to stretch the sound of a letter. There are three letters of madd: 1. An Alif ( ا ) with a zabar before it. 2. A waw Saakin ( و ) with a pesh before it. 3. A Yaa Saakin ( ي ) with a zer before it. There are two types of Madd: م د ا ل ص ل ي Asli- Maddul م د ال ف ر ع ي Far ee- Maddul Page 41

م د ا ل ص ل ي Asli- Maddul After the letters of Madd ) و ا (, there should be: ء) ا ا ) Humza NO ي ا ا or ي, و NO other saakin letter after a NO Tashdeed- And NO madd symbols ) ( on top. Maddul Asli will be stretched for one alif only. NOTE: One Alif means the amount of time it takes to lift one finger. It is NOT permissible to stretch it more or less than one alif. Harfi ح ر ف ي م خ ف ف Mukhaffaf- 4. Harfi ل ي ن ل ز م Laazim-.5 Leen Terms to remember: Hurooful Muqatta aat ح ر و ف ال م ق ط ع ات : A word that is in the beginning of many surahs. Only Allah Ta ala knows the meaning of these words. KIlmi: A word which is NOT from the Hurooful Muqatta aat (Letters of Muqatta aat). Harfi: A word which is from the Hurooful Muqatta aat (Letters of Muqatta aat). Muthaqqal: A word that has a tashdeed. Mukhaffaf: A word that has a permanent Saakin. Page 47

It will be stretched 3 or 5 alifs. ا ل ح آق ة و ال ص ف ت ا ت ح آج و ن ي In this example, it has two kilmi muthaqqals, ا and Kilmi Mukhaffaf-. و ك ل م ي م خ ف ف After the letters of Madd ) ي و ا (, there appears a permanent saakin in the same word. It will be stretched 3 or 5 alifs. ا ا لئ ن Qur an: There is only one example in the Page 48

ح ر ف ي م ث ق ل Muthaqqal- Harfi After the letters of Madd ) ي و ا (, there appears a Tashdeed in the letters of Muqatta aat. It will be stretched 3 or 5 alifs. In this example, the Laam ا ل م ( ا ل ف ل م م ي م ) be Harfi Muthaqqal because of a tashdeed after it. will ل ط س م )ط ا س ي م م ي م ) س In this example, the Seen will be Harfi Muthaqqal because of a tashdeed after it. Miscellaneous rules 1. In the following words, the Alif will be used to stretch the letter ONLY AT THE TIME WAQF: Ahzaab) (In Surah ا ل ظ ن و ن ا ا لر س و ل ا لس ب ي ل Kahaf) (Surah ل ك ن ا But, if one does not make waqf at those places, then the Alif will NOT be used to stretch the letter. 2. In the following word, one has a choice, whether to use the Alif for stretching the second laam: Dahr) (In Surah س ل س ل or س ل س ل 3. The word ق و ار ي ر ا in Surah Dahr, is repeated twice. In the first one, the alif after raa will ONLY be used when making waqf. In the second ق و ار ي ر ا, the Alif will not be used at all, regardless whether one is making waqf or not. Page 54

4. In the following words, the Alif after Laam will NOT be used to stretch the Laam: اهلل ت ح ش ر و ن ا ل ل #158) (In Surah Aale Imraan,Ayah #47) ( In Surah Taubah, Ayah و لا و ض ع و ا #21) (In Surah Surah Namal, Ayah ا و ل ا ذ ب ح ن ه #68) (In Surah Saaffaat, Ayah ل ا ل ال ج ح ي م #13) (In Surah Hashar, Ayah ل ا ن ت م 5. In Surah Hood, the Raa in the word م ج ر ه ا will be read with Imaalah. In other words, it will be read as Ray. ء 6. In Surah Haa Meem Sajdah, the second Hamza ع ج م ي in the word ء ا will be read with Page 55

While making ghunnah on the Noon Mushaddad ن in the word ل ت ا م ن ا, make the lips round for a moment and then leave it. ط 8.
