RESEARCH ACTIVITIES BY Dr. Regina Folorunsho
Research Areas The Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) was established in November 1975 by the Research Institutes Establishment Order of 1975. The Institute conducts research in the following areas: Abundance, distribution and other biological characteristics of species s of fish and other marine forms of life and practical methods of their rational exploitation and utilization; Physical, geological and geophysical characteristics of the Nigerian territorial waters and the high seas beyond; Effects of pollution in the Nigerian coastal waters and its prevention; Improvement of brackish water fishing and fish culture; Design and fabrication of simple fisheries implements and equipment; The nature of the marine environment, including weather forecasting, seabed topography and characteristics and deposits; Fish utilization and The socio economic problems of exploitation of the resources of the t seas and brackish water.
SIX MAIN RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS MARINE RESOURCE MARINE GEOLOGY/GEOPHYSICS PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL OCEANOGRAPHY AQUACULTURE BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY FISH TECHNOLOGY/BIO TECHNOLOGY
MARINE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT Survey of tuna and tuna like fishes in the Nigeria EEZ Exploratory deep sea fishing NIOMR Survey deeper waters 100 600 meters to relieve pressure on the coastal resources Achievement: Drift fishes Arioma bandi and Arioma malanum found in Commercial quantities at about 100 300m
Identification of New Fisheries Resources NIOMR research survey carried out in the near shore waters, coastal lagoons and estuaries established these areas as nursery grounds for explioted fisheries resources. Stock assessment also carried out from time to time.
DEPARTMENT OF AQUACULTURE Selection of cultivable fish species Integrated fish farming with vegetable production Fish pond construction and control of water/soil quality parameters Fish culture in home stead concrete tanks Water recirculation system with a production capacity of 20 tonnes of table fish
Construct FISH TECHNOLOGY SECTION shark driftnet with large mesh (200 300mm) Fish shelters with cheap locally available and environmentally friendly materials including worn out tyres and polypropylene rope streamers The turtle excluder devise (TED) installed in shrimp trawlnet to exclude the endangered sea turtle from being captured
MARINE GEOLOGY/GEOPHYSICS DEPARTMENT GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY AND BATHYMETRY OF THE CONTINENTAL SHELF BEACH EROSION SEA LEVEL RISE MONITORING AND EFFECTS ON THE NIGERIAN COASTAL ZONE GEOLOGICAL STUDY OF ESTUARIES IN THE NIGERIAN COASTAL ZONE REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP COOPERATION Regional Office for OceanData in Africa (ODINAFRICA). Project funded by IOC UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission for Eastern Atlantic (IOCEA) Regional node for the Land and Ocean Interaction of the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programm (IGBP) African Monsoon Multidisplinary Analyses (AMMA) project
FISH TECHNOLOGY AND BIO TECHNOLOGY Design, fabrication and patented fish smoking kiln capable of drying 250kg of fish within 6 hours. Fabrication and Installation of over 10 smoke drying equipment for corporate organizations Canning of Tuna, Bonga, sardinella, drift fish, Ariomma spp. Production of fishmeal from by products Post Harvest loss Assessment
CONSTRAINTS IN RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN NIOMR Inadequate provision of human capacity development Inadequate funding for research and extension projects Poor laboratory structure and equipment at the various departments
