Thank you for choosing the C Lazy U Ranch for your hunting destination! This packet will go over what to expect during the week, as well as anything you might need to bring. If you have any additional questions feel free to reach out to our ranch concierge staff (970) 887-3344. Before you arrive Drink plenty of water. The C Lazy U is at 8,200ft with dry mountain air, and properly hydrating before you arrive as well as when you are on ranch is key to preventing altitude sickness. The ranch provides reusable water bottles to help you stay hydrated! At our elevation, it is important to remember the effects of exercise are more intense. For example, if you normally run 10 miles a day at home, 6 miles will be the equivalent while you re here. There is also approximately 25 percent less protection from the sun at this altitude so sunscreen and sunglasses are a must, whether you use ours or bring your own. Colorado law requires that anyone born on or after January 1, 1949, complete an approved hunter education course before applying for or buying a Colorado hunting license. It is important to have this completed in advance to your arrival to purchase your license and the card must be present with the hunter at all times unless you have it certified at a Colorado Parks & Wildlife office. HUNTING INFORMATION ELK Colorado is home to some of the largest elk herds in North America. Elk hunting is one of our most popular hunts but typically is not classified as a trophy hunt. On average we harvest elk around 275 (5x5 and 6x6). Every year we do come across some larger elk in the 330 350 size range. We are fortunate enough to be situated near Rocky Mountain National Park which contributes to the larger sized bulls. Elk hunting is one of Colorado s signature hunts! MULE DEER The C Lazy U Ranch is located in some of the best mule deer country in Colorado. Year after year, we see trophy bucks cross through the property during the rut as they are moving down from their high timber summer habitat. On average we harvest deer in the 175-180 range. With that said, almost every year we are harvesting a monster muley that falls in the 200-220 range. Expect to see a lot of deer during the hunt, and be ready for Buck Fever when the big guy walks out! MOOSE We are home to a large population of moose. If you are lucky enough to draw a tag in Colorado, get ready for a fun hunt. On average we see moose in the 30-35 range. On the big size we harvest moose around 45-50.
frequently asked questions SUCCESS RATES Overall we have just over a 70% success rate: archery/muzzle Loader: 50% opportunity rate and rifle: 100% opportunity rate. Opportunity rate is measured by the hunter seeing game and having a chance to harvest. If a hunter does not harvest, it is a result of them passing on a smaller animal or missing a shot. Guest to Guide Ratio We provide a one on one hunting experience for our guests, however we are also able to accommodate if you would like to hunt with a family member or friend. All our guides are very experienced and work together during the hunting season. Expect to hunt with a variety of our guides over the course of the five-day hunt. WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE HUNT Our guides will pick up each guest from the main ranch compound by vehicle or ATV and travel a short distance to the different hunting areas. The farthest drive is roughly 25 minutes. Once you get to the hunting area, we use several different tactics including setting up in ground blinds as well as spot and stalk techniques. SHOT EXPECTATION & CALIBER RIFLE CHOICE We recommend that our hunters feel comfortable shooting out to 50 yards with a bow and 300-350 yards with a rifle. When it comes to caliber of rifle, we recommend 270, 300, 7MM with a 130-180 grain bullet. LOCATION The C Lazy U Ranch is located just outside of Granby, Colorado. We sit at 8,200 ft of elevation and hunt +/- 1000 ft in Grand County. We are about 90 miles North West of Denver International Airport. TAXIDERMY We recommend two local taxidermists who offer a wide range of services. More information is available upon request.
frequently asked questions MEAT PROCESSING We offer two options for meat processing. We use a local vender for fast turnaround so you can take your meat back with you. The ranch also offers on site meat processing as our executive chef has made a great menu inclusive of sausages, jerky, meat loaf, etc. This option will require shipping or later pick up due to the added time of curing and processing the meat. MEAT SHIPPING Shipping cost for meat can add up fast given the speedy delivery needed for perishable products. Here are some options to think about before you arrive: DRIVE YOURSELF - Usually the most economical option as you can pack the meat in coolers and monitor temperature during travel. PACK COOLERS AS CHECKED LUGGAGE - Depending on your carrier, filling up two to three 50lb wheeled coolers is a great option and only costs normal baggage fees. WILD GAME TRANSPORT - A local trucking service that will deliver to most of the US. FEDEX OR UPS - you can package coolers and send them FedEx or UPS one or two day. OTHER RANCH ACTIVTIES The ranch offers a variety of other activities, including horseback riding, fly fishing, trap shooting, guided hiking and mountain biking, as well as spa services at the Lazy You Spa. BACK AT THE RANCH The C Lazy U Ranch is a year round guest ranch that accommodates family travel, business retreats, weddings, along with the hunting program. Although we may only have three to six hunters at the ranch each season, expect to see other guests on property participating in meetings or activities. The ranch promotes a family environment accommodating to all ages and interests. Look to meet some new people during your stay in which we all can share our great hunting stories from the day!
