Smith averaged 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds in nine games. Smith recorded back-to-back double-doubles against Florida A&M and Illinois Springfield. At Florida A&M, Smith set career highs scoring 19 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. At Illinois-Springfield, she poured in 15 points and tallied 12 rebounds. Smith and Lennox are joined by five other returning players. Jennifer Nehls, Carmen Tellez, Danielle Berry, Zharia Lenoirm and Halle Stull all return for the Panthers this season. They are joined by seven new players with three from overseas. Grace McRae and Lana Marov both come to EIU from Australia, while Camino Tellez joins us from Madrid, Spain. Taylor Steele, Karle Pace, Katrina Christian, and Vuyelwa Magalela come from across the States. Lennox is nearing the 1,000th point one game into the 2017-18 regular season. She currently has 889 career points following a17 point performance in the season opener against NIU. The Panthers need to be more aggressive in the paint following their first game of the season. NIU out-scored EIU in the paint 37-25 and the Panthers gave up 17 second chance points. The Panthers need to secure the boards after the first shot and make sure to get on help defense when the opponent enters the paint. EIU relies heavily on the three-point shot having taken 36 against NIU and should look to attack more in the paint. EIU needs to look for better scoring opportunities in their second game. The Panthers had 70 field goal attempts against NIU and only connected on 24 of them finishing the game shooting 34 percent from the field. They were held to just 15.8 percent in the second quarter and went 0-9 behind the arc. Coach Bollant will look for better offensive execution from his players vs. Wright State. The Panthers were strong with the ball last game only committing 15 turnovers to NIU s 17. Despite turning the ball over less, the Huskies were able to outscore the Panther 19-11 off of turnovers. EIU will have to be quicker in transition to capitalize on their opponents mistakes. The Panthers hosted Indiana State and Rose-Hulman for exhibition games this season. EIU defeated the Sycamores 77-70 on Nov. 3. Lennox had 25 points and shot 57 percent from beyond the arc for EIU. She hit back-to-back three-pointers in the fourth quarter helping secure the seven point victory. Carmen Tellez hit five three-pointers for the Panthers and added 17 points. In their final exhibition match, EIU hosted Rose-Hulman. Rose-Hulman tested the Panthers in the first half of play, but EIU ultimately walked away with a 73-58 victory. Jennifer Nehls scored 13 third quarter points to ignite the offensive spark. Lennox finished the game with 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Nehls shot 4-7 from beyond the arc and added 16 points for EIU.
