SHIPPENSBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINE Title: NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION Date: 11/30/10 SAG # 1.05 Page 1 of 1 Purpose: To ensure that all personnel receive the proper training before riding fire apparatus and becoming interior firefighters. Applicability: For all Shippensburg Fire Department personnel who intend to ride fire apparatus and become interior firefighters. Policy: 1.0 New Members 1.1 All new members who intend to ride fire apparatus and participate in fire/rescue activities must go through this orientation. 1.2 All Chief Officers will ensure that their personnel are working at their current training level. 1.3 Each new member will receive the attached packet. A senior firefighter or officer will be assigned as a mentor through this process. 1.4 As the new member is ready to ride fire apparatus or to become an interior firefighter, a memo will be posted at their respective station of their new status. 1.5 The appropriate helmet color designation will be worn until the training level is completed.

Shippensburg Fire Department New Member Orientation Station # Requirements to Ride Fire Apparatus as an Exterior Firefighter: Complete New Member Checklist Hazardous Material Operations Level Responder (an online Awareness Level Course is acceptable until the responder is able to attend an Operation Level Course) CPR Approved by Station Chief Job objectives of an Exterior Firefighter: Includes All Junior Members Operational Duties shall be limited to exterior operations, working under the direct supervision of the Incident Commander, Unit Officer or Driver/Operator. The member shall not be counted toward apparatus staffing. The member shall not operate in an IDLH atmosphere or within the collapse zone of an incident. The member shall not don SCBA for operational use, except for training. The member shall concede their seat to any interior member should there be no other seats available on the apparatus. The member shall have identification on their helmet that identifies the individual as an exterior firefighter. Requirements to Ride Fire Apparatus as an Interior Firefighter: Complete Entry Level Firefighter Curriculum Hazardous Material Operational Level CPR/AED Job objectives of an Interior Firefighter: The member can act as a part of team performing search/rescue, fire attack, and ventilation. The member can operate SCBA in IDLH atmosphere. The member needs to work directly with the unit officer.
