No player will be allowed to play in an age division tournament without proof of age. January 1st, at 12:00 a.m. of the current year, shall be the determining date for the age of the competitor and shall hold true for the District, Regional and National Championships. Grade division participants do not need birth certificates or driver s license, but do need a signature on the entry blank from a school official verifying grade and school.
3 Iowa AAU Girls Basketball November, 2006 GENERAL INFORMATION (For both Boys and Girls) SPONSORS: Amateur Athletic Union of the United s Iowa Amateur Athletic Union Several Iowa High School Booster and Service Clubs AAU MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS All participants and coaches must be members of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The annual membership fee applies to all AAU sports throughout the year. ENTRY FEE: Varies per age division and is a double elimination tournament in all age and grade divisions. Tournament format is pool play and single elimination or double elimination depending upon number of teams entered and gym availability. Send fee with entry blank to the Tournament Director. Number of games averaged per team in 2005 was four (4) games. ROSTER OF PLAYERS: The roster established at the time of the first regional game must be used throughout the state tournament. No additions or changes are permitted. National AAU rules limit the roster to fifteen (15) players in age tournaments. BALLS: Balls will be furnished for games only. Teams must bring their own warm up balls. COACHES OF TEAMS: It is assumed that school personnel (compensated or not) who coach teams in these tournaments are familiar with and are in compliance with Iowa High School Athletic Association rules. Iowa AAU cannot rule on the eligibility of coaches. AWARDS: Individual medals will be provided for the final four teams in each of the tournaments. Team trophies will be awarded to the championship team in each division. The most valuable player of each state tournament will be given an award by Iowa AAU. SPECTATORS: Spectators are welcome. An admission charge will be made. Participating players and all AAU registered coaches will be admitted free with AAU membership card, for their games. HOLD HARMLESS: The sponsoring organizations and the host schools will not be responsible for any injuries, loss of property, or any accidents that might occur during the tournaments. UNIFORMS: Each team must have jerseys of like color with number preferably on front and back. Teams competing in National Championships must have WHITE and dark jerseys as well as number on front and back. At National Championships, girls must have same color sports bra as their uniform, if it is a man cut top.
4 Iowa AAU Girls Basketball November, 2006 AAU MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP PERIOD: The 2007 membership period is from September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007. AAU MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS: The AAU will continue its regular membership program, which provides athlete accident insurance and general liability insurance for all AAU sanctioned practices and competitions - as a benefit of membership. All aspects of our current program will be maintained for regular membership of $12.00 per youth athlete and $14.00 for non-athletes (coaches). The Added Benefit or AB membership provides athlete accident and general liability insurance for athletes, non-athletes (coaches), clubs and Districts in specified non-aausanctioned competitions. The AB card must be purchased when the athlete or coach first registers with the AAU. Athletes/Non-Athletes (Coaches) may not pay the difference in the cards to up-grade to an AB card at a later date. The AB card is available to all youth athletes and non-athletes. INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS: For a single annual fee, membership provides: Participation in high quality programs that offer, enhance and strengthen competition for amateur athletes such as: Baseball (May-July) Basketball (November - May) Cross Country (September-November) Golf (May-August) Gymnastics (November-May) Track and Field (May-July) Trampoline/Tumbling (November-May) Volleyball (February-April) Wrestling (November-March) MEMBERSHIP FINANCES: Three quarters of the individual membership fee is passed on to the national AAU with 25% remaining in Iowa. As a volunteer organization, Iowa AAU has no paid employees. The Iowa portion of the fee is used entirely to cover the cost of administering Iowa AAU sports programs including postage, phone, copying, printing and promotion of AAU activities. Iowa AAU office resides rent fee in a private home. For team sports, all athletes and coaches on the team must have the AB membership for it to be in effect. Some of the members cannot have regular membership and some have AB memberships. In team sports, both general liability and athlete accident insurance will be extended to AAU teams participating in supervised and scheduled non-aau-sanctioned competitions and practices. Coverage will not extend to any non-aau-sanctioned competitions hosted or conducted by AAU clubs. The cost of the AB card is $14.00 for youth and $16.00 for non-athletes (coaches). Membership Fee: $12 athlete /$14 nonathlete or AB membership $14 athlete/$16 non-athlete. You can get one membership for all of your school teams.
5 Iowa AAU Girls Basketball November, 2006 PLAYER PARTICIPATION: Any player competing in a specific age division must remain in that age division and only that age division throughout ANY Qualifying Tournaments (District or Super Regionals) and the National Championships, both Division I and Division II. Players will be allowed to play in Division I AND II National Championships, only if their team does NOT qualify for Division I. Individual players (NOT A TEAM) will be allowed to play in both the D-I National Championship by being picked up by a Qualifying team) & the D-II National Championship either by being picked up by another NON-Qualifying team or with their original NON-Qualifying team). Participating In A Bordering District An athlete may participate in her District of residence, where she attends school full time OR in a bordering District qualifying tournament. At no time will a player be eligible to play in a District5 that is not her own or does not border her own. She shall register in her resident District. may participate in any or all the grade tournaments for which she qualifies. A lower grade player may play in a high grade tournament. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY: In grade level tournaments, all players must have a school official s sign the roster that indicates the school they attend and the grade that they are presently attending. College students, if cleared by their own school (and meet all other requirements) will be allowed to play in the 19:U division, if otherwise eligible. LENGTH OF QUARTERS: The 10:U, 11:U, 12:U, 13:U, 7th Grade and 8th Grade Divisions will play 7 minute quarters. All other divisions will play 8 minute quarters. RULES: Iowa High School Athletic Association rules will be used. The 3-point shot will be used in all divisions involving 8th grade and 14:U and above. Teams competing in National Championship tournaments must have light and dark jerseys as well as numbers on front and back. A maximum of three (3) athletes from bordering Districts will be allowed on any team at District, Regional or National level. In addition to the age tournaments, a player

Districts which do not field and play a minimum of three (3) teams from a minimum of two (2) separate AAU clubs in their District age-division Qualifying Tournament shall not participate in the National Championships, but may participate in the Division II Championships. Procedures for advancing to National Championships Division I. 11:U, 12:U, 13:U, 14:U, 15:U, 16:U & 17:U 3-13 Teams one team advances 14-23 Teams two teams advance 24-47 Teams three teams advance 48 or more Teams four teams advance 18:U 3-5 Teams one team advances 6-8 Teams two teams advance 9-12 Teams three teams advance 13 or more Teams four teams advance In the 10:U age division, if an District conducts an District qualifier, a maximum of four (4) teams may advance to the National Championship regardless of their placement.. Participation is defined as a registered team that has actually played in its District agegroup qualifier. A registered team that forfeits all of its games shall not be counted as a participating team. In the event a qualified first, second, third or fourth place team relinquishes its right to play in the
7 Iowa AAU Girls Basketball November, 2006 National Championships: The team must notify the District Chair of its inability to fulfill its obligation to participate. Upon receipt of this notification the District Chair shall notify the National Chair and select the second, third or fourth place team or beyond, respectively, to fill the vacancies. No District may be represented at the National championships by more teams than it qualified, except the Host District. Players will be allowed to play in Division I & II National Championships. Only if their team does NOT qualify for Division I, then Individual players (NOT A TEAM) will be allowed to play in both the D-I (by being picked up by a Qualifying team) & the D-II National Championship. ADDING PLAYERS FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Three (3) players may be added to a team s roster advancing to the National Championships as long as they qualify by age, residence and is a member of the AAU.
