STARTING SEQUENCE Starting flag sequence for all races will follow AOCRA standard. *Failure to start behind the line or to disregard any instruction given to you by race officials during race start will result in disqualification. Raised WHITE flag Raised RED flag Raised GREEN flag Raised BLACK flag Indicates up to a maximum of TWO minutes to start. Indicates up to a maximum of 20 seconds to start. Indicates RACE START Indicates that a canoe is over the start line. A verbal warning may be given to the offending canoe. GENERAL WATER SAFETY PREVENTATIVE MEASURES It is the participating paddlers responsibility to ensure that the canoe meets AOCRA safety standards. Prior to the commencement of each race event participating canoes will be scrutineered by an authorized representative from AOCRA and/or the SSZ OC. Only canoes that pass scrutineering shall be used in any event during of the championships. The primary risk is the potential for interactions between outrigger canoes and large marine vessels including commercial and recreational fishing boats and general marine pleasure craft. All preventative measures must be taken to avoid collisions including actions such as canoes giving way to larger craft and following Victorian Marine Regulations. The start point for racing will be either on the ocean past the breaker zone or on the lakes complex (dependant on local conditions at the time of racing). This will be clear of major marina/port traffic and is relatively protected. All paddlers must be aware of other craft in the area at all times. SWIM TESTS All participating paddlers are required to have successfully completed the AOCRA Swim test, conducted in accordance with the AOCRA Member Protection Policy section 5.3 Paddler Suitability (Swim, tread and Huli). HULI/TIPPING DRILLS Canoes have the potential to tip during racing. Participating paddlers shall be confident in their own ability to flip a canoe upright and reboard the canoe. SUN PROTECTION AOCRA have a sun protection policy within the MPP. Paddling involves long periods of time exposed to the elements and appropriate sun protection should be used including, hats, sun cream, long sleeved sun shirts and sunglasses. HYDRATION Another part of being in the sun for long periods is the risk of dehydration from over exposure. Suitable hydration packs and/or systems 6

should be taken and used during racing. STRONG WIND WARNING AOCRA has a strict policy on the use of canoes during strong and gale force wind warnings. Under no circumstances are canoes to be put in to the water during a gale force warning. In times of strong wind and/or seas, SSZ OC will use alternative courses which offer protection from Strong Winds. Please see course layouts in this document. CLIMATIC CONDITIONS Victorian Climatic Conditions can be quite variable at this time of year. Average day temperature in November is 20 degrees Celsius and average water/sea temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. Paddling attire should be suitable for local conditions and for being on the water for an extended period. This can include Thermal Pants/ Shirts Booties Gloves Multi layering CANOE SAFETY SSZ OC requires the following safety requirements during each racing event during the Championships. PERSONAL AND CANOE REQUIREMENTS These requirements are mandatory All Canoes must 1. Carry a spare paddle 2. Must have a leg rope affixed to the canoe and the paddler 3. V1/3 s must have a Bailer fixed to the Va a by means of a leash long enough to effectively bail water out of the hull. Any Paddlers not meeting these requirements will be withdrawn from the event. SAFETY ON WATER If assistance is required for whatever reason Paddlers must raise and wave their paddles in the air to alert support craft or passing canoes for assistance. Competitors are required to go to the immediate assistance of a canoe in trouble and if practically reasonable to help the paddler in trouble. Any participant found not to have helped will be disqualified from the event and any championship points will be void. If at any stage of the event a safety official requests a canoe return to shore it must comply with this request immediately. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of the paddler/crew from the event and any further events during the Regatta. TIDAL CONDITIONS The lakes complex is heavily influenced by the Tidal patterns and entry and exit through the channel is very dependent on ocean and other environmental factors. The table below shows predicted tidal patterns for the event and racing will be timed to best accommodate this. 7

Canoes are very limited in the Southern States Zone and this is a first in best dressed arrangement. Loan or hire fees are to be arranged by yourself and the lender/hirer of the craft. Southern States Zone in principle supports the arrangement that if a canoe is damaged, the responsibility of repair is solely between the parties and not the Organising Committee and/or Zone Committee Facebook: 2017 Nationals Canoe Hire@sszaocra COACHING CLINIC A coaching clinic will be held on the Friday morning which will run for approximately 3-4 hours. The clinic is open to all AOCRA members but is designed to encourage greater female participation in small craft. It will concentrate on canoe handling in surf conditions, paddling techniques, safety on the water etc. All the necessary water safety will be in place and with the amazing location of the championships this year, it will be conducted in both flat protected waters and surf conditions. Jane Hall from NSW, who has run several of these types of clinics has kindly offered to facilitate the course. Having a coach and paddler of Janes experience is a great boon for our championships and we are excited to have her on board. We believe that our sport can only be improved by equal and strong participation by women. Participants in this clinic will take away new skills and experience, confidence and encouragement for all female paddlers to get on small craft and see how much fun they are and how they can improve your skills and fitness for OC6 paddling. Registration for the clinic will be done through the AOCRA website. Cost is $50. The clinic will be limited to only 30 participants. 8
