2000-01 WOMEN'S OUTLOOK The Hawks made quite an impression in their first season and this year's squad will have a hearty task trying to equal the debut performance. Monmouth finished third at the Northeast Conference championships in the fall of 1999 and finished ahead of veteran programs like Wagner, Maryland-Baltimore County and Mount St. Mary's. The Hawks started off their inaugural season with a suprising 10th-place finish in the Dartmouth Invitational and a 14th-place showing at the Yale Invitational. Following their brilliant performance at the NEC Championships, the Hawks placed eighth at the Rutgers Invitational. In the spring, Monmouth had strong performances at the Boston College Invitational where they placed 11th and the Wellesley Inn Hartford Invitational where they finished eighth. Monmouth finished 1-1 in their only dual action as they defeated Fairfield but fell to Wagner. First-year head coach BRYAN CAREY will have plenty to work with this season as the Hawks return their top three players from a year ago. Monmouth's top players in its initial season were STEPHANIE COUGHLIN and JACLYN LUCAS. Coughlin earned All-Northeast Conference honors and finished in fifth place at the league championships as a freshman. Coughlin showed more signs of promise in the spring as she placed 25th at the Boston College Invitational and 21st at the Hartford Invitational, but the Hawks will need her to improve on her consistency if they hope to keep climing the conference ladder. Lucas also earned All-Northeast Conference recognition and placed eighth at the conference championships. Lucas was Monmouth's most consistent player on the Jaclyn Lucas was Monmouth's most consistent performer last season as she posted four top 10 finishes. year and she posted four top 10 results, including a pair of sixth place finishes at the Rutgers Invitational and Boston College Invitaitonal. Lucas was Monmouth's low scorer in seven of the Hawks' 10 events. SHENOA VILD highlighted her freshman campaign with a 12th place finish at the conference championships and she just missed all-league recognition by two strokes. Vild came on strong late in the season and posted a 24th-place finish at the seasonending Hartford Invitational. Monmouth adds a trio of freshman to the mix this season. The group includes three New Jersey products, including SARI MILLER from Paramus, MEGHAN HENNING from Long Valley and VALERIE CENTANNI from Long Branch. All three golfers were four-year letterwinners in high school. Miller posted an 86.8 stroke average as a prep star. Henning posted an 88.6 stroke average. 11

DEAL GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB The 6,277-yard, par-71 Deal Golf and Country Club will serve as the home course of the Monmouth Hawks men's golf team for the sixth consecutive year. The first-ever golf course built along the Jersey Shore, a railroad financier and shipping magnate named George Washington Young purchased 135 acres in West Deal where he built a magnificent estate along with a nine-hole course designed by Lawrence Van Etten. Three years later, Young and his associates formed the Deal Golf Club in 1898 and built a clubhouse that remains the oldest in continuous use in New Jersey. In 1899, the golf facilities at Deal were expanded as a short nine-hole course exclusively for ladies and a second nine were added a year later. By 1903, the Deal Golf Club comprised 600 members, including summer visitors and was regarded as the busiest in the country. Designed by Donald Ross, Deal is known for its bunkers and highly-countoured greens which come in a variety of configurations. Most of the greens are tightly bunkered, including a number in the front. Most noteworthy is the hidden "Valley of Sin" green on the par-three eighth hole, which is angles right-to-left away from the shot with a deep swale through the middle. The very picturesque dog-leg fourth hole calls for a 200-yard tee shot to the right side of the fairway, eliminating the copse of tress on the left-hand side. The hole then drops sharply down to a green set in a hollow behind a deep bunker. In 1903, Deal, considered the second-longest course in the country at the time, played host to the Met Amateur. Long-hitting Scot, Findlay Douglas overpowered the field to win the title. Two men figure most prominently in Deal's history. Francis Arend, the Club president form 1916 to 1942 also served as golf chairman (running tournaments and assigning handicaps) and Vic Ghezzi, an inductee in the PGA Hall of Fame and a member of three Ryder Cup teams. Ghezzi represented Deal when he beat Byron Nelson on the 38th hole of the 1941 PGA championship. Amon the more notable names to the grounds at Deal were Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln, who was also a member of the club. Also legendary college football coach Knute Rockne and his Notre Dame squad featuring the fabled "Four Horsemen" appeared prior to their game with Princeton in 1924. SUNEAGLES GOLF CLUB AT FORT MONMOUTH Monmouth University's women's golf program is proud to call the A.W. Tillinghast-designed Suneagles Golf Club its home course. The 6,125- yard, par-72 layout provides a true test of one's ability. Some of the other designs by Tillinghast include Baltusrol, Bethpage, Winged Foot and Ridgewood, to name a few. The friendly atmosphere and warm reception by the staff and members at Suneagles truly makes the women's program feel "at home." Suneagles, formerly known as Monmouth County Country Club, was purchased by the United States 15 Army in 1942. The club hosted the 1935 New Jersey Open which was won by legendary golfer Byron Nelson for his first professional victory. Other famous Suneagles golfers have included: Babe Ruth, Sam Snead, Vic Ghezzi, Orville Moody and Althea Gibson. The club has undergone major renovation, with over four million dollars spent on making improvements to the facility. Included in the upgrade were a new pro shop, renovated locker rooms, 10 new greens, eight new tee boxes, a new practice facility and a new automated irrigation system.
