COUGAR RUGBY CLUB A History In 1982 after a rugby tour, our own Joe Cavallaro and Gary Kee formed and coached the area s first rugby team at Del Campo High School. A game was played against the Piedmont International Touring Side (PITS), a team of veteran high school players coached by John Cullom. Amazingly, Del Campo (known today as the Cougar Rugby Club) narrowly prevailed. The seed was planted and it did grow! Over the past 25 years, competition throughout the Sacramento Valley has sprung up, as our area has developed into a primary rugby incubator, producing several teams, and numerous players, of National status.¹ Today the Cougar Rugby Club (CRC) continues to promote the sport of rugby under the leadership of Coach Cavallaro and Coach Kee. It has evolved to include three Under-17 teams and a newly formed Under-15 Team. Every year CRC invites new players from the Carmichael and Fair Oaks area to participate in the club, regardless of experience level. Members of CRC come from all walks of life. Each member has equal opportunity to compete and is essential to the success of the club. The brotherhood of rugby encompasses the globe and possesses the greatest camaraderie in organized sport today. Like all sports organizations, in order to provide our players with the most opportunities possible, we require continuous funding. Because CRC is a club and is not affiliated with a school we are responsible for our own funding. Therefore, we consider our players, parents and families to be our booster club. The club dues, your volunteer efforts, fundraising support and donations are a vital part of this organizations success. An executive board that makes decisions about the clubs affairs and its future governs CRC. The eight members who make up this board include a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, two senior coaches, an administrator and parent representative. All of our board members have a player on the team and have a personal interest to make this and every season a success for each player and family involved. The mission of the Cougar Rugby Club is to create memorable experiences, foster the personal growth of our players by providing opportunities to improve physical fitness and self confidence and to strengthen skills of discipline, teamwork, cooperation, decision making, leadership and character through participation, competition and promotion of the game of Rugby in the greater Sacramento area. On behalf of everyone at CRC, we d like to say welcome and congratulations on being a part of the 2008 Cougar Rugby Club! ¹ Sacramento Valley High School Rugby Conference, Ray Thompson, http://kickofftournament.com/, Internet, accessed 23 September 2007.

COUGAR RUGBY CLUB Athletic Policies and Regulations Because an athletic program is an integral part of the total educational program, we would like to be certain that you are aware of the policies and regulations used as guidelines for participation in The Cougar Rugby Club. Please read the following guidelines carefully, knowing that the coaches will refer to them in discussing questions pertaining to acceptable conduct of a Cougar Rugby Club participant. We feel these guidelines will be helpful in reassuring that our program will result in a rewarding experience for all participants. A. Pre-Participation Requirements 1. A parent must sign the release form granting permission for you to take part in all Cougar Rugby Club activities. 2. Insurance coverage is required to cover possible accidents. You must have medical coverage. Coverage may be by parents private insurance company. If the coverage is by a private company, the parents must state the name of the company on the release form. 3. You must present to your coach the appropriately signed release form. A student becomes a member of the club and subject to all athletic policies and regulations once he/she has signed the release form. B. School Responsibilities 1. Students must have grades that their parents are comfortable with in order to participate in the Cougar Rugby Club. 2. If not they will NOT be allowed to participate until the parents say they can. C. General Conduct 1. There will be absolutely no drinking of alcoholic beverages, use of tobacco or involvement in narcotics or drugs by the members of the Cougar Rugby Club. Violation of this rule may result in the athlete being dropped or suspended from the club. 2. The appearance of athletes in The Cougar Rugby Club shall be presentable. 3. Forgery or falsification of information on any form required to participate will result in the athlete being dropped from the club. 4. Player must show the club a cooperative attitude at all times or may be dropped from the club.

D. Club Member Responsibilities 1. Be on time to games and practices. Coaches will take necessary action to see that this rule is enforced. Repeated violations may result in the player being dropped from the club. 2. There will be absolutely no cutting of practices. If you are at school during the day and then must be absent from practice, for an excusable reason, you must report personally to the coach and check out. You owe this to your coach. Practices are organized for your benefit and the benefit of other team members who are depending on you. If this personal reason is not made in advance, the absence will be considered a cut of practice. The first cut will receive a warning and the second may result in the player being dropped from the club. Be a loyal club member. 3. Remember that a player is never more than a team and will be removed from said team/club if the player does not live up to their obligations to the team/club, coaches and school. Following are general points to remember. i. Remember that you represent The Cougar Rugby Club. Do not make a demonstration of yourself on the field. Swearing will not be tolerated. ii. Respect other people s property 4. If a player is becoming an attitude problem that the coach feels is being detrimental to the team/clubs well being, the coach will have a conference with the player as a warning. If such attitude continues, the coach will then take appropriate action. If the problem persists, this action may include dropping the player from the club. We recognize a lot is required of an athlete in The Cougar Rugby Club, but we feel the rewards will be equally as numerous, beneficial and long lasting. Responsible participation in Athletics will be an integral part of the education process. The Cougar Rugby Club program takes pride in providing a fair and sportsmanlike program for athletes. In the event you have a concern or question, contact Coach Joe Cavallaro Home: 962-0131 or Work: 971-5660. READ SIGN & RETURN TO COACH The signature below will verify that the parent/guardian and student athlete have read and do understand The Cougar Rugby Club athletic policies and regulations.
