Added to the roster from Carolina yesterday, Morimando scattered six hits and two runs, and did not walk a batter. In two Akron starts this season, he is 1-0, 1.50. Last night s crowd of 7,896 was the seventh sellout of the 2014 season. The RubberDucks rank third in the EL in attendance with an average of 5,269 fans per game. The RubberDucks are in sole possession of second place in the EL West, one game behind Richmond. The Flying Squirrels fell at home to Harrisburg, 4-3, in 11 innings last night. The franchise began as the Canton-Akron Indians in 1989, and then moved to Canal Park in Akron as the Aeros in 1997. On October 29, 2013, the team officially changed its name from the Aeros to the RubberDucks. The name is derived from the city s long history as the Rubber Capital of the World. Akron has made the Eastern League playoffs 14 times overall, and eight of the last 12 years. The team has captured four Eastern League titles 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2012. RubberDucks Rewind Last Time Out SeaWolves Sneak By RubberDucks, 3-2 by Melissa Powell (Akron, Ohio) July 18, 2014 The Erie SeaWolves snapped a 2-2 tie in the top of the 10th inning by launching back-to-back doubles, bringing home the go-ahead run and giving them just enough to defeat the Akron RubberDucks, 3-2, on Friday night at Canal Park. The teams traded momentum as Erie posted a single run in the second and third inning and the 'Ducks followed by posting a single run in each of the fourth and fifth frames. The SeaWolves were first to drive in a run when right fielder Steven Moya crossed on a Francisco Martinez sacrifice fly in the top of the second frame. Erie second baseman Devon Travis sent a solo bomb to left-center field to help the SeaWolves to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third inning. The RubberDucks got on the board when Adam Abraham doubled, advanced on a wild pitch from Thompson and scored on a groundout. Another ground-out in the bottom of the fifth created a scoring opportunity for Ronny Rodriguez and knotted the score at 2-2. In his second AA appearance, Akron starter Shawn Morimando hurled six innings in which he allowed six hits and two runs while striking out one. The lefty's six-inning outing matched his AA debut on May 30 at Canal Park when he worked through six shutout innings and racked up six strikeouts. SeaWolves starter Jake Thompson posted a similar line, helping to lock the game at a 2-2 tie after spending the first six innings on the mound, allowing five hits and two runs and striking out two. Erie closer Angel Nesbitt (1-0) picked up the win after pitching two innings and allowing one hit and fanning one. Shawn Armstrong (4-2) pitched the final inning, gave up two hits and one run and struck out two. RubberDuckS 2014 Field Staff #17 David Wallace, Manager A former catcher in the Indians minor league system, Wallace was named Akron s 15 th manager on December 20, 2013. The 2014 season is Wallace s fourth as a minor league manager. A former star football and baseball player at Vanderbilt University, Wallace enjoyed a seven-year minor league career, mostly with the Indians organization. He spent parts of three seasons as a player in Akron, appearing in 122 games with 17 homers and 54 RBI. After concluding his playing career, he spent two seasons as a staff assistant with the major league club before embarking on his managerial career with Mahoning Valley in 2011. #45 Jeff Harris, Pitching Coach Now in his sixth season in the Indians organization, Harris assumes the role of pitching coach for the RubberDucks in 2014. In addition to being symbolic of the fun, family-friendly brand of entertainment offered by minor league baseball, the name also honors Akron s long history as the Rubber Capital of the World. Brandiose Marketing of San Diego, California designed the team logo, colors, and various marks and insignias. Please note that for print coverage, RubberDucks is spelled as one word with a capital D. In broadcast coverage, referring to the team as the Ducks is an acceptable variation of the team s nickname.
