A B O U T S E A T T L E Seattle University, founded in 1891, is one of the nation s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Seattle University is the largest independent institution in the Northwest. At Seattle University, a core curriculum provides a learning experience in the liberal arts that brings focus to the scholarly and practical Jesuit values. Approximately 6,100 students are enrolled in 44 undergraduate programs, 24 graduate programs, and 20 certificate programs from eight schools and colleges. Seattle University dedicates itself to its historical mission of teaching and learning, education for values, preparation for service, and growth of persons. Located in Seattle s First Hill neighborhood on the edge of downtown, Seattle University is the place to be if you are seeking the educational advantages of attending college in a metropolitan area. You can enjoy all that Seattle has to offer in culture, sports and entertainment. The downtown community respects the university, and the opportunities for personal and professional growth are boundless. Teaching is the first priority at Seattle University. With a student-teacher ratio of 18:1, you will receive plenty of personal attention. Challenging curriculum. Stimulating campus. Beautiful city. Friendly community. That s Seattle University. 1

2 0 0 4 / 2 0 0 5 M E N S B A S K E T B A L L S E A S O N O U T L O O K I t s never easy taking over a men s basketball program. Seattle University head coach Joe Callero knew that when he took the job before the 2001-02 season. But taking over a program with high expectations despite having just a combined 21 wins over the previous four years is another steep task in itself. Seattle, once a national power that reached the NCAA Division I title game in 1958, has suffered through some tough years since the 1970s. But now in his fourth season at the helm, Callero is beginning to see a light at the end of a three-year journey that has already seen the program progress. We re looking to continue to find stability in this program, Callero said. We return five starters and we had a winning record at home in 2004 with two sophomores and a freshman point guard. We re just looking to improve our consistency, especially on the road. Callero worked a miracle in his second year, leading Seattle to a 16-11 record its first winning season in 10 years just one year after taking over as head coach. Last year, Seattle went 9-18 in a season riddled with injuries to a young team, but the Redhawks stayed competitive all year with 10 of those losses coming by scores of 10 points or less. With a full cast of starters returning along with his most talented recruiting class to date, Callero is looking toward the 2004-05 season with renewed confidence. Senior Bim Makinde GUARDS With loads of talent at guard, expect to see a three-guard lineup throughout the season to keep as much talent on the floor as possible. Returners Bim Makinde and Andy Bloom proved that they can play at a high level in 2004 and return along with sophomore point guard Ryan Webb. Makinde and Bloom averaged a combined 18.0 points per game last year and have the ability to make a huge impact. They demonstrated a knowledge of the league and the ability to compete at this level, Callero said. They re going to need to continue to improve as the scouting reports improve on them. But both have worked hard in the offseason. Webb learned the collegiate game on the fly earning starting point 2

guard honors immediately out of high school. He responded with 7.6 points and 4.6 assists per game and had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.6. In fact, he had equal or more assists than turnovers in all but five games in 2004. But with excitement about returners comes even higher hopes from the newcomers. Bernard Seals comes to Seattle from California s Cosumnes River College as a scoring threat after shooting 56 percent from 3-point range last season, and Sean Namanny was also one of the top 3-point threats in California s junior college system. Namanny, from Los Medanos College, joins Seals and two other Redhawks to make a total of four players at Seattle from the greater San Francisco Bay area. Junior college transfer Keith Nelson will add quickness to both the point and off guard positions and Andy Anderson will learn the system behind Bloom and Makinde. Freshman Shaun Burl should see immediate playing time off the bench at the point and Jordan Schultz will likely redshirt while he learns the system. FORWARDS There is little doubt that Jeffrey McDaniel will be the leader of the Redhawk frontcourt in 2004-05. Despite an injury in 2004, McDaniel still led Seattle in scoring with 11.8 points per game and showed the potential to dominate. McDaniel scored in double figures 14 times last season. The athletic junior will look to stay healthy in the upcoming season, and if he does, Callero has high expectations for him. I m looking to Jeff to have a breakout season, Callero said. Given health, he should be one of the top 10 players in the league. Two players will join McDaniel at forward with returner Kyle Vessey joined by freshman Ryan Coldren. Both will be expected to contribute. Vessey is a role player who added depth, strength and experience, while Coldren comes in as an extremely athletic player at 6-foot-8 with the ability to shoot the long-range shot as well as get to the rim. CENTERS Scott Rainey will be the key big man for the Redhawks after sharing time at center last season. Rainey, a transfer from UC Santa Barbara last year, hadn t seen much competition for two years after a redshirt year in 2002 and limited action in 2003, so last season s experience should go a long way in getting Rainey back into the swing of full-time action. Scott gained valuable experience as a sophomore, Callero said. We re looking for him to be a more consistent rebounder as well as an intelligent defender. Also listed at center is 6-9 redshirt freshman Travis Welt who will see his first collegiate action in 2004-05. See the 2004/2005 Men s Basketball Schedule on the back cover. 3

C O A C H I N G S T A F F J O E C A L L E R O HEAD COACH 4TH YEAR, 31-52, CENTRAL WASHINGTON 86 Joe Callero returns for his fourth year at the helm of the Seattle University men s basketball team in hopes of continuing the rebuilding process of the Redhawks men s basketball program. In the 2002-03 campaign, his second year as head coach, Callero brought the team its first winning season in nine years, and his Redhawks finished with the program s best winning percentage since the 1984-85 season. Seattle finished with a record of 16-11, a 10-game improvement from the previous year and the second-best turnaround in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. While Callero s success in such a short time has been very impressive, the Seattle University athletic department knew they were getting the right man to revive the basketball program when Callero was announced as the team s head coach in June 2001. From 1999-2001, Callero guided the University of Puget Sound to a combined 22-25 record, after taking over a program that had been on the down slope for a number of years. In his second of two seasons, Callero posted a record of 14-10, the Loggers first winning season in nine years. His UPS team won its first six games of the season, the best start in 20 years for the program. Callero also served as a physical education instructor and the Director of Basketball Camps at Puget Sound. The year before joining UPS, Callero served as an assistant coach under Henry Bibby at the University of Southern California. That season (1998-99), the Trojans earned a bid to the NIT postseason tournament. Before joining the USC staff, Callero was a prominent figure in the northwest basketball coaching scene. In two three-year stints at Highline Community College (1989-92, 1995-98), Callero compiled a career record of 130-49. He guided his team to back-to-back NWAACC championships in 1997 and 1998 with a combined record of 63-2, earning honors as the Northwest Division Coach of the Year in both seasons. During their time at Highline, Callero and assistant coach Fred Harrison coached Brian Scalabrine who currently plays for the NBA s New Jersey Nets. Between his stints at Highline, Callero served as the head basketball coach and guidance counselor at Sumner High School from 1992-95. He led Sumner to its first winning season in six years. Callero also directed school district camps, including the Nate McMillan Basketball Camp. A graduate of Central Washington University, Callero received his BA in psychology in 1986 where he helped guide the Wildcats to NAIA national tournament appearances in his two seasons at the university. He received his master s in education in post-secondary counseling from Seattle University in 1991 and his AA from Highline Community College in 1983. Coach Callero resides in Renton with his wife Erika and their daughter Malia, 5. 9

C O A C H I N G S T A F F F R E D H A R R I S O N ASSISTANT COACH 3RD YEAR, EASTERN MONTANA 69 Fred Harrison continued a tradition of success with Joe Callero when he joined the Redhawk coaching staff two seasons ago and was a part of the team s best finish in 18 years in 2002-03. The legendary coach returns for his third season as an assistant. Harrison was the head coach at Highline Community College between 1976-89, where Callero played under him for two seasons. Harrison went on to serve as Highline s athletic director from 1992-99. During that time he also spent three years as an assistant to Callero, when the Thunderbirds recorded back-to-back NWAACC championships and posted an 87-10 record. For his time and success in the NWAACC, Harrison was inducted into the NWAACC Hall of Fame in June, 2004. Harrison built a name for himself originally as a standout local high school coach. Harrison served three years as the head coach at Cleveland High School, guiding the Eagles to back-to-back state titles and a 48-1 record during those two seasons. The Seattle Times honored his 1975-76 Eagles as the best high school boy s basketball team of the century, featuring former Seattle University stars Carl Ervin and Jawann Oldham. Harrison earned his bachelor s degree from Eastern Montana in 1969, where he competed on the men s basketball and golf teams. He also competed in both sports at Highline Community College from 1964-66 and was awarded an honorary associate s degree in 1999 after retiring from his post as athletic director. Harrison earned his master s degree in administration with principal s credentials from Seattle University in 1978. Coach Harrison lives in Renton with his wife Linda. E D D I E L I N C O L N STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH 1ST YEAR Eddie Lincoln will transfer his on-the-court passion and leadership to the bench in 2004-05 as he moves from Redhawk player to graduate assistant coach. He will use his collegiate experience and natural leadership abilities from a coaching standpoint after a successful two-year career at Seattle. Lincoln came into Seattle as a junior and made an immediate impact despite playing out of position for the entire season. At point guard, Lincoln averaged 6.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and just less than one steal per game. A strong perimeter defender, Lincoln was one of just two players to start all 27 games in 2003, and was a key part of Seattle s 16-11 season which was a 10-game improvement from the previous year. Injuries slowed Lincoln as a senior, but he still saw playing time in 23 games and was a vocal leader on and off the court. He transferred into Seattle after playing two seasons at NCAA Division I Eastern Washington, where he saw playing time in 49 games. Lincoln was also a standout local high school player at nearby O Dea, earning honors as the class 3A state player of the year in 2000. That season, he averaged 16.8 points per game to lead the Irish to a 20-11 record and a fourth-place finish in the state tournament. He was selected to the all- Metro League first team twice, and led O Dea to a second-place finish in the state tournament his junior year. Lincoln scored 34 points in the league championship game against Rainier Beach that year, including the game-winning basket, and was also a member of O Dea s state championship team that finished 29-0 in his freshman season. 10

H A L L O F F A M E E D O B R I E N ( 1 9 5 1-5 3 ) J O H N O B R I E N ( 1 9 5 1-5 3 ) Perhaps the finest all-around athletes in Seattle University athletics history, the O Brien twins propelled the Chieftains into the national spotlight in the 1950s. John became the first collegiate player to ever score 1,000 points in a single year, tallying 1,051 in 1952. He ranks as Seattle s all-time leading scorer with 2,733 career points. While John emerged as a prolific scorer, his brother Ed guided the Chieftain offense from the point guard position. Ed set a personal record with 530 points during the 1953 season. He later served as Seattle s athletic director for 12 years. In addition to their tremendous success on the court, both O Briens excelled at baseball as well. They played in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization following their collegiate careers. Ed and John O Brien had their numbers 3 and 4 respectively retired at Seattle University. E L G I N B AY L O R ( 1 9 5 7-5 8 ) The man who literally redefined the small forward position during his college and professional career, Elgin Baylor led the Chieftains to their greatest postseason success. After ushering in a new era of athletic, above-the-rim play during his first year at Seattle, Baylor guided the Chieftains to the 1958 NCAA Division I championship game. Though unable to defeat Adolph Rupp s Kentucky Wildcats in that contest, Baylor wrote himself into basketball legend with two seasons of outstanding performance and was named to the 1958 NCAA Final Four all-tournament team. He was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1958 and followed the franchise to Los Angeles, playing until 1972. Baylor earned all-pro acclaim several times during his NBA career, teaming with Jerry West to create the Laker legacy of success. In commemoration of the NBA s 50th season, Baylor was named one of the 50 greatest players of all time. Holder of 11 Seattle University basketball records, including single-game scoring (60 points against Portland in 1958), Baylor is in both the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Seattle University Athletic Hall of Fame. Currently, Baylor is the general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers NBA franchise. He was recently honored by The Sporting News as the No. 19 player in its publication Legends of College Basketball. Baylor had his number 22 retired at Seattle University. E D D I E M I L E S ( 1 9 6 1-6 3 ) One of the purest shooters in college basketball history, Eddie Miles earned the monicker The Man with the Golden Arm during his playing career at Seattle University. Miles, who made a living with the long-range shot before the advent of the 3-point line, is second all-time on Seattle s NCAA scoring list with 1,874 points. He is one of only three Seattle players to score at least 500 points in three consecutive years. The Chieftains advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament during all three of Miles seasons. Elected to the Seattle University Athletics Hall of Fame for his exploits, Miles was a No. 1 draft choice of the Detroit Pistons in 1963. He played with Detroit for six seasons and with Baltimore for three, averaging a career-high 19.6 points for the Pistons in 1966. Miles had his number 20 retired at Seattle University. C L I N T R I C H A R D S O N ( 1 9 7 6-7 9 ) The only Chieftain player to lead the team in scoring for four consecutive years, Clint Richardson was a standout on the Seattle University teams of the late 1970s. A graduate of O Dea High School, he immediately stepped into a starring role for the Chieftains and ended his career with 1,841 points, third-best all-time among Seattle University NCAA players. Richardson played with the Philadelphia 76ers during their heyday of the early 1980s, joining Julius Erving, Moses Malone and Bobby Jones in winning an NBA Championship in 1983. Richardson had his number 44 retired at Seattle University. R O D D E R L I N E ( 1 9 7 0-7 4 ) Rod Derline emerged from small-town Elma, Wash. to become a star for the Chieftains as a three-year letterwinner. His long-range sharp shooting earned him the monicker The Rifle, and he lives up to that, joining Seattle University s elite list of career 1,000-point scorers. Derline shot over 50 percent from the field in his junior and senior seasons and finished at 49 percent for his career. Derline averaged 13.4 points per game for his career, including 16.4 per contest in his junior year. Known for his shooting, Derline s solid all-around game and hard work drew the attention of professional teams. It was the hometown Sonics who selected Derline with the fifth pick in the 10th round of the 1974 NBA draft. The team recently selected that class as its fifth-best draft class in club history. Highly regarded by the Seattle coaching staff, Derline played just two seasons before a knee injury forced him into early retirement. During his prep days, Derline averaged more than 20 points per game at Elma High school in both his junior and senior seasons and still holds the record for field goals attempted in a class 1A state tournament game (47). Derline was named to The Seattle Times All-Century Team, honoring the state s top prep players in the 1900s. 19

H A L L O F F A M E D R. H U B E R G R I M M ( 1 9 4 9-7 9 ) Dr. Huber Grimm was inducted into the Seattle University Hall of Fame for his 30 years of service as the team physician. He was not just a doctor, he was a friend to all and a true fan of the basketball program. He saw over the health of the athletes and added to the immense success of Seattle University basketball, and did so while donating his services to the university. Here are just a few of the former players who had many kind words to share: Ed O Brien (1951-53): He and his wife Georgia were two of the most staunch fans of our Chieftains. He was very dedicated to the team and players. Dr. Grimm is one of the unsung heroes of Seattle University. Jerry Tardie (1962-64): Dr. Grimm was as important to the program as any player. We were very lucky to have him. He had an open-door policy and was always there for us, no matter the circumstance. Everybody respected him and had confidence in him. He truly had Seattle University basketball at heart, and that is hard to find. Dr. Grimm was like a father away from home. Tom Workman (1964-67): Dr. Grimm was a great man who really cared for the program. He always had time for us. The only negative thing I would say is that the days we took our physicals were not always pleasant. He was very thorough. F R E D O L E Y N I C K ( 1 9 7 2-7 5 ) A three-year letterwinner for the Chieftains, Frank Oleynick s spectacular ball handling, fancy passing and sharp shooting earned him the monicker Magic. He averaged 22.6 points for his career, the third-highest scoring average in program history. The first player in team history to start a game as a freshman, Oleynick also ranked sixth all-time in career points (1,696), third in free-throw percentage (82.4), fifth in field goals made (665), sixth in assists average (4.2) and seventh in free throws made (34) and owns two of the eight highest single scoring seasons in program history. As a junior, Oleynick led the nation in free-throw percentage (88.8 percent) and was an AP Honorable Mention All-American and a first-team All-West Coast Athletic Conference selection. He was just the third sophomore in WCAC history to be named league MVP. Oleynick left Seattle University following his junior campaign and was the 12th selection in the 1975 NBA draft, taken by the Seattle Supersonics. He played two seasons as a professional. J O H N T R E S VA N T ( 1 9 6 1-6 4 ) A fierce presence in the low post, John Tresvant lettered three years for the Chieftains, averaging a double-double in points and rebounds in all but his freshman season. He averaged 12.6 points and 11.1 rebounds in his career, the programs fourth-highest career rebounding average. Tresvant also ranks fifth all-time in career rebounds with 916. He gold the school record for rebounds in a single game with an amazing 40 against Montana on Feb. 8, 1963 the fourth highest singlegame rebounding total in NCAA Division I history. In his senior year, he was an NCAA Far West Region All-Star selection and was named to the UPI All-West Coast second team. Tresvant was the 35th selection in the 1964 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks and played nine season in the NBA. T O M W O R K M A N ( 1 9 6 4-6 7 ) A three-year letterwinner for the Chieftains, Tom Workman was a tenacious inside scorer and rebounding threat. He averaged 19.2 points and 8.4 rebounds in his career, and ranks as Seattle University s 11th all-time leading scorer with 1,497 career points. Workman is fourth all-time in free throws made (435) and is tied for the school records for both free throws made (20) and attempted (24) in a single game, accomplishing those feats on Dec.13, 1965 against UC Santa Barbara. He also shot 50.5 percent from the field in his career. In the 1966-67 season, Workman joined UCLA s Lew Alcindor as the only two UPI All-West Coast First Team unanimous selections. He was also an honorable mention AP All-American and competed in the East-West All-Star Game. He also earned UPI All-West Coast first team honors in the 1965-66 campaign. Workman was the eighth selection in the 1967 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks and played seven professional seasons. 20
