This form will provide us with the number of answer sheets, names of students, and the students who are purchasing additional vouchers (as well as the number being purchased). Predictions 1. The average length of a baseball game is about 3 hours. What is the average length of an inning in a regular 9-inning game? Using that value, what is your prediction for the length of a game that lasts 15 innings? 2. There are 162 games during the regular season. Josh Reddick hits 15 homeruns after playing the first 81 games of the season. If he keeps up this pace, how many homeruns do you predict he will hit during the entire season? 3. Coco Crisp s goal was to have a.300 batting average at the end of the season. At the All-Star Break (halfway through the season), he has 90 hits in 284 at bats. If he continues at this pace, will he reach his goal? (Hint: batting average is found by dividing hits by at bats.) 4. On average, a starting pitcher pitches once every 5 games. If the team plays 162 games and Brett Anderson wins half of his starts, how many wins will be have at the end of the season? 5. Seth Smith s goal is to have 180 hits by the end of the season. After the first quarter of the season, he has 40 hits. Is he on pace to reach his goal? If not, how many hits does he need to hit in each of the 3 remaining quarters of the season? 2013 Mathletics_Workbook_6-8.indd 3 1/10/13 2:54 PM
Calculating a Pitcher s ERA In baseball, a statistic called an Earned Run Average or ERA is used to track the average number of earned runs a pitcher allowed for every nine innings. The lower a pitcher s ERA, the less number of runs a pitcher has given up in the innings he has pitched. To calculate a pitcher s ERA, you multiply the total number of earned runs (ER) by 9 and divide the result by total innings pitched (IP). The equation is: (ER) x 9 IP 1. In 2012, Tommy Milone pitched 190 innings and gave up 79 earned runs. What was his ERA? = ERA 2. Which starting pitcher had the best ERA? Tommy Milone (see answer from #1) Travis Blackley: 49 earned runs in 107 innings A.J. Griffin: 28 earned runs in 82 innings 3. Bob Melvin has decided to buy dinner for the relief pitcher with the best ERA. Who will he choose? Ryan Cook: 17 earned runs in 73 innings Sean Doolittle: 16 earned runs in 47 innings Jerry Blevins: 18 earned runs in 65 innings Use greater than (>), less than (<), or equal to (=) signs. 4. Pedro Figueroa gave up 8 earned runs in 21 innings Grant Balfour gave up 21 earned runs in 74 innings 2013 Mathletics_Workbook_6-8.indd 4 1/10/13 2:54 PM
Calculating a Batter s OBP On-Base percentage (OBP) is a statistic that expresses how often a batter reaches base on hits, walks, or being hit by a pitch. OBP differs from batting average (AVG) because AVG only includes a batter s hits. To calculate OBP, adds hits, walks (BB), and amount of times hit by a pitch (HBP). Then, divide that value by the sum of at bats, walks, amounts of times hit by pitch, and sacrifice flies. The equation is: H + BB + HBP AB + BB + HBP + SF = OBP 1. In 2012, Coco Crisp had 118 hits, 45 walks, and 6 sacrifice flies in 455 at bats. He was hit by 0 pitches. What was his OBP? 2. In 2012, Seth Smith had 92 hits, 50 walks, and 3 sacrifice flies in 383 at bats. He was hit by 5 pitches. How many points higher was his OBP than his batting average? (Hint: batting average is found by dividing hits by at bats). 3. Derek Norris had 42 hits, 21 walks, and 1 sacrifice fly in 209 at bats. He was hit by 1 pitch. Josh Reddick had 148 hits, 55 walks, and 4 sacrifice flies in 611 at bats. He was hit by 2 pitches. Brandon Moss OBP was.358. Who had the highest OBP? 4. If Yoenis Céspedes OBP was.356 in 2012 and he had 43 walks, 3 sacrifice flies, and was hit by a pitch 7 times in 487 at bats, how many hits did he have? 2013 Mathletics_Workbook_6-8.indd 5 1/10/13 2:54 PM
