Mark your calendar: Valentine s Day Party - February 14 Thoughts for Food - March 7 St. Patrick s Day Dinner - March 14 Opening Day - May 30 REEF POINT For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship (RYC Constitution, Article II) February 2015 Racine Yacht Club Commodore s Report Welcome to the dog days of winter where sailors find ways to keep their thoughts on warmer times and soft water. January brought the standard fun times such as Strictly Sail and our yearly awards banquet. It never ceases to amaze me on what fantastic members we have at RYC. Dedicating their time to promote the love of the water and celebrating the accomplishments of their friends, our members are family. The Awards Banquet, Club 1916, was a fantastic success. Bob and Cathy Sample out did themselves once again organizing a stupendous event. In the midst of a transition of caterers, our members jumped in to make an incredible meal for all to savor. When I asked all of those who helped create the wonderful meal to come out of the kitchen to offer thanks, I was amazed on how many members were packed into that small kitchen. Outstanding job!!! As February is here it brings the winter shutdown of our Club for a little needed sprucing up. Again, not only does the Club The Awards Dinner s Galley Crew RYC members thank the volunteer galley crew for a fantastic dinner. Photo courtesy of Gregg Henning Racine, Wisconsin shine, but also our members shine. If you need work or pay hours or you just want to come and help out, there will be a list of items to be accomplished during shutdown at the club. I did not intend to write this report as a dedication to our members and all the hard work they put into the making RYC great, it just happened. A simple thank you is all I have to offer, but it is truly sincere. Our new caterers, Tina and Eddie, have a special Valentine s Day dinner on Saturday, February 14th, so get your reservations in, grab your significant other as this looks to be shaping up to be an outstanding event. Of course, Kurt is lining up some great entertainment for the evening as well. Remember, even though it feels like winter, keep your shorts on, keep positive vibes, and summer will be here sooner than you think! It is always tropical in your mind! RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the January Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall presented the December Treasurer s report: We lost money this month, due to paying the last $5000 for dredging waste disposal and having to buy new ice eaters. We are still ahead for the year, so barring a major expense, we should add to our reserves this fiscal year, which only has a month to go. Kim and I estimated current income and expenses for next year, there was not much left for one-time expenses. We will need to prioritize projected projects for next year and hopefully find items in recurring expenses that can be reduced or ways of increasing income. Randall reported water levels are expected to drop one inch next month. Commodore Gregg Henning reported that he spoke with the Racine Fire Marshall regarding open fire burning. The city of Racine has an ordinance and it s not permitted without a permit and a $100 fee. Putting in a permanent fire pit was discussed as this would not be considered an Open fire. A plan will be put together to create this fire pit and present it to the Fire Marshall in the spring. Vice Commodore John Stanley reported the contract with the new caterer had been signed. The New Years Eve party went very well. The members all enjoyed the New York drop. Office Manager Kim Shortness led a discussion regarding the new menu and started with John Stanley reviewing it with the new caterer. Rear Commodore Amy Cermak led a discussion on next year s youth and adult sailing programs. She presented the youth brochure that she and Kim had created. She received authorization to go ahead and print the youth flyer for the Strictly Sail show. Pier Director Mark Lukow reported he would be over budget this year. The harbor is freezing very rapidly so any precautionary effort to prevent ice damage to the floating docks has been missed. Yard Director Jack Landwehr reported that Randy was all set to start plowing. Race Director Bob Sample gave a banquet update and reported that everything was going together as planned. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES HOOK: Registration and NOR are posted. OTHER: Charlie gave a 100th anniversary organization status update. He reiterated he has committee meetings scheduled. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Commodore Gregg Henning led a discussion regarding family sailing programs. il mostro - The Monster By John Stanley With the current Volvo Ocean Race about half way done, I thought I would share some experiences of sailing one of these offshore racing machines. In 2012, Peter Thorton of Chicago purchased il mostro, better known as Puma. il mostro placed 2nd in the 2008-09 Volvo Round the World race. Having raced Peter s previous boat, a Santa Cruz 70, I was invited to join the team in 2013. The 14 crew positions are shared between Volvo race professionals and local crew. Some boat details are truly impressive: the boat is 70 feet long with 12 foot bow sprit, 105 foot mast and an 18.5 foot beam. Displacement is 30,000 pounds with half of this in the bulb, 15 feet down on a keel that cants 40 degrees either side. Twin rudders, two dagger boards and the drive shaft and prop all retract into the hull. The main sail is just over 2,000 square feet, and the largest spinnaker is in excess of 5,500 square feet. The PHRF handicap is -181. All of this sail area is powered by up to six people. The three grinding pedestals can be shifted to any of the winches, main, primary(jib and kite) or the bitch winch which is used for hoisting, furling, or transferring loads. The runner winches are on their own and geared for high loads. The entire boat, mast, winches and standing rigging are carbon fiber. This does make the boat rather noisy down below. My first year was quite a learning experience, as this boat is set up for long distance and not really short course racing (lots of tacking/sail changes etc.). The jibs are hanked on the head stay to prevent the sail from going overboard, so changing from a #1 to a #2 is a long process. If a change is required, the #4 is brought up and hoisted, this sail is furled and has its own inner stay. The #1 is dropped, flaked and stored (typically on the weather rail), #2 is hanked on, hoisted and the #4 is furled and removed. This is an all hands change due to the size and weight of the sails and the decision to change is not taken lightly. Every thing is manually powered by line except for the keel. This is hydraulic, powered by battery for fine tuning the cant or by the engine for quick movement such as tacking. There are no sail tracks onboard, only floating fairleads. All sails are trimmed in three dimensions for optimum shape. Simply said, if you re not driving, you re grinding. Now the fun stuff. When the breeze is over seven knots, the boat speed exceeds the wind speed on most angles. Reaching is the best for this boat when the keel is canted full, both boards are up, boat is healed about 20 degrees. Sails and crew are stacked to weather and all the way aft. Top speed we ve seen is 27 knots although the boat has hit 50 in the Southern ocean. Even upwind, il mostro has done 14 knots in a 20 knot breeze and 6 foot seas - a very wet ride. Steering this boat has a very unique feel, as you hit the waves at speed, the keel, being 15 feet out to the side, drives the bow down so you have to anticipate this to keep the boat in trim. The helmsman is on a raised platform for good visibility, keel control buttons directly in front of the wheel and trimmers keeping all in balance. As big as it seams, il mostro does drive like a sport boat, and once planing, there s no ride like it. Down below is not as nice. A black cave comes to mind. Cooking on a single burner camp stove, sleeping on pipe berths (no cushions), deafening noise from the winch loads and hull vibrations. There is not one item on board that doesn t have a purpose for speed or safety. Even the navigation table, situated aft, under the cockpit, rotates so the navigator is sitting on the high side. The pros seem to have little trouble sleeping, but it does take some getting used to. Oh and when you tack, the engine is used to cant the keel. This is a very powerful boat, but we are racing on Lake Michigan after all, and the typical wind is around seven knots. The boat has gone on a weight reduction diet and a boost in sail area from the Volvo days but when the wind dies, this very wide boat drags its transom and can be rather frustrating to sail. Several Mac races have been spent sitting on the bow trying to lift the transom out, while listening to stories of the Volvo races. The goal for the owner is first to finish and to set course records. In 2013 we accomplished just that in the Port Huron Mac race, finishing first in a record 19 hours, taking 6-1/2 hours off the old record. 2014 saw lighter breezes and il mostro never got the chance to stretch her legs. This year, we are updating sails, adding smaller rudders to reduce drag in light air and again putting il mostro on a diet. We hope to see a little more breeze and some wild rides this summer as we chase the line honors and records for both Macs, Queen s Cup and the Trans-Superior. 3
