Thanks to the volunteers who worked at the display: Sandy Clayton, Tamra and Tanya Rumer (1), Sharyl and Paul Tombs, Susan Tyler, and Fred Werhli (3). Pat Lamprey brought panels of photos from driving events, as well as a rein board for people to try their hands at reinsmanship. Several members brought their carriages including Joe Johnson, who set up the display and brought five carriages he built (2, 6, 7); Bob Ripple brought two carriages (4, 5, for sale), Terri Miller brought three, Margie Liliestedt brought three, and Bill Morgan brought his cart hitched to his mini (1). Altogether, we had fourteen carriages on display. (numbers refer to pictures.) Lots of folks stopped by to ask about the carriages and check out our events schedule. One even signed up to volunteer! C o l o r a d o d r i v i n g s o c i e t y. p b w o r k s. c o m P a g e 5 CDS EVENT: PICNIC DRIVE SUNDAY, APRIL 24 SALISBURY HORSE PARK, PARKER, CO CDS Picnic Drive/Fun Day Sunday, April 24 A no pressure, fun day. An informal get-together of like-minded folks. Drive at around 10:00. See how the hazards survived the winter. Gather for lunch at around noon. Talk about the fun planned for the coming season. Bring your own lunch and chairs!

P a g e 6 D r i v i n g L i n e s A p r i l 2 0 1 6 CDS EVENT: GREENLAND OPEN SPACE TRAIL DRIVE SUNDAY, MAY 15 LARKSPUR, CO CDS Greenland Open Space Trail Drive 10 am 1 pm, May 15, 2015 reenland is part of the vast expanse of Douglas G County open space you see along I-25 between Larkspur and Monument hill. It is easily accessible at exit 167 from both north bound and south bound I- 25. Lots of drive-through trailer parking, a port-a-potty and a covered picnic area with really nice tables are all provided at the trailhead. Directions: From I- 25 exit 167, go west.2 mile to where road turns south. Entrance to Greenland Open Space will be straight ahead.4 mile. The organizers will be there before 10:00 AM. Please plan to arrive early enough to complete your drive by 1:00 PM. Our picnic will follow, so bring your lunch. If you have any questions, give us a call. Bob Ripple: 303-681-2574 rcjbripp@aol.com Please call so we know who is planning to come. When you arrive, please see Bob to sign a release before the drive. Your drive can be as long as 9+ miles or as short as you want it to be. Almost everywhere along the trail you will be able to move off the trail to rest your equine and/or circle around to reverse direction. Everyone from VSE to draft drivers can enjoy an interesting drive in an awesomely huge area of open space. After the first.9 mile, you will have choices. [1] You can plan to drive the entire Kipps Loop for a 8.2 mile RT drive. [2] You can plan to drive only the lower trail. That would be a RT drive of 2.0 miles to 7.0 miles depending on when you decide to reverse direction. [3] You can plan to drive only the higher trail. That would be a RT of from 2.0 to 9.4 miles. On all the trails, none of the inclines or declines are steep. There are not any scary drop-offs. Most of the trails were originally graded and spread with gravel. Over time, some erosion and re-growth of the original vegetation has occurred. As a consequence, in some areas one wheel path may be obscured and the ride can be a little rough. The trail is some what comparable to a marathon course without hazards. However, you will have no need to go fast.

A p r i l 2 0 1 6 W w w. C o l o r a d o d r i v i n g s o c i e t y. p b w o r k s. c o m P a g e 9 Driver Proficiency Program Evaluations offered by the Carriage Association of America and hosted in Colorado by Rocky Mountain Carriage Club RMCC is planning to host a Level 1 & Road Driving evaluation program the end of August or first part of September: Jan Canino graciously has offered the use of her wonderful facility, Jerry Tripani, Master Evaluator and Chair of CAA s National Driver Proficiency Program has made the commitment to be our evaluator at a very economical price. Normally, you would have to travel across the country to an evaluation center to participate in this program. We are very fortunate to be able to have this event come to us. A sufficient number of RMCC members are interested in CAA s Driver Proficiency Program, so they are moving forward with some planning. They are opening it up to CDS members as well, so if you are interested, please contact Diane at eastgate@what-wire.com. Here's what you need to know: Level 1: The basic level (but not for complete beginners) is for those ready to drive away from home. This is a competence evaluation and will confirm that you are doing things safely. This level covers harness knowledge, harnessing and putting to, practical driving, horse care, and general knowledge. Any safe style of driving is accepted. Open to CAA members and nonmembers. You may register and purchase your syllabus through RMCC. You must register and purchase a syllabus to participate in the evaluation day. Total cost to participants will be $175-$200 depending upon how many register. The evaluation costs are as follows: Level 1 (CAA Member)...$ 75.00 Level 1 (CAA non-member)...$ 85.00 Road Driving (combined with Level 1 evaluation above)...$ 30.00 Road Driving (separately CAA membership required)...$ 60.00 Syllabus...$18.00 Sharing of host and evaluator honorarium (split between participants).$ 50.00 +/- RMCC is planning to host a few study sessions and training opportunities for those interested. These sessions are not required for you to be evaluated, but may help to get you prepared. This is basic good horsemanship and knowledge. But, we all can benefit from a brush up and input from others. There is more than one way to do things right, so you could learn another method or see where you can improve your safety habits. You will definitely want to study and prepare for the evaluation either with the group or on your own. Our first step is to get a list together of those who want to participate. Registration will follow. Please let Diane know if you are interested in the evaluation and will commit to registering. Space is limited to 6 evaluations per day on a first come-first served basis.
