Marquette Jr Hockey Guideline and Calendar The following is a guide and calendar of events designed to assist local association board members, staff and volunteers in their endeavor to provide a quality hockey experience for its players, parents and coaches. This guide may not encompass all reminders and events, if you feel any need to be added, please send an email to MJHBoard@MqtHockey.org. Marquette Jr Hockey Corporation recommends checking the MJHHockey.org website frequently. Scheduled events such as practices and games may change at any time due to NMU Basketball, NMU Hockey, Redmen Hockey and other outside influences. Our MqtHockey.org website is always the most up-to-date resource that we have. April Revised 2018-1-1 We start with April as the MJH Board and staff need to start preparing for the upcoming season. Mid-April MAHA District 8 Meeting/CUP League Meeting at Wawonowin. A representative from the board should attend. Schedule practice ice for split season and travel teams at NMU for August/September. Solicit Travel Team coaches via newspaper, email, website, to be approved at May Meeting. Make sure to give them the travel team tryout policy. End of year awards banquet is in April. Ask the Marquette Community Foundation to meet with the board for an Update Review MJH staff roles and responsibilities. Perform annual reviews with MJH Staff. Interview prospective travel team coaches to be approved at the May meeting. Review the parent handbook and policy manual. May
This will be the final month for board members fulfilling their 3yr term. Solicit sponsors for hockey cards June This will be the first board meeting for incoming board members serving a new 3yr term. July MJH Board to determine new board president, vice president and secretary MJH Board to discuss membership to its committees. Evaluate equipment needs for the upcoming season o (jerseys, socks, etc). o Instructional - Sticks and Jerseys Prepare to submit a budget for the following years season at the July board meeting Register the Holiday and Betty Beckman tournaments with MAHA. Establish fees for player registration. Establish tournament entry fees. July 1 is the beginning of the MJHC fiscal year. MJH Board to approve the next season s budget. Schedule split season tryout dates. Schedule travel team tryout dates. Post-Split season and travel team tryout dates on MqtHockey.org Mid July, notify split season players of tryouts and give them tryout rules. End of July, open member online registration on the MqtHockey.org website Notify members that registration is now open. Include information for 14U, 12U, 10U and girls travel team tryout dates. Include tryout policy. Post the Holiday and Betty Beckman tournament dates and registration information on the MqtHockey.org website. Enable tournament registration online. Signed affiliate agreement must be sent to the D8 Chairperson by August 1. Have Hockey Cards printed different color each year August Split season teams are the only teams with tryouts in August. 18U tryouts are to be held before 16U tryouts.
Send out team picture RFP s. Begin distribution of hockey cards. Post ad in the newspaper for member registration. Prepare flyer to distribute at local public schools for registration. Notify members that registration is now open. Include information for 14U, 12U, 10U and girls travel team tryout dates. Include tryout policy. NIHL travel team scheduling the 3 rd Saturday in August Apply for Marquette Convention and Visitors Bureau grant Schedule evaluations for house league. September House and Travel teams begin their seasons in September. Early September - Send out emails to people not registered but registered last year. Deliver flyers to public schools to encourage membership and registration. Approve vendor for team pictures. Travel Team Tryouts are the first weekend after Labor Day. Solicit division directors for 18/16U, 14U, 12U, 10U, 8U, 6U and Girls. Solicit head coaches for house league teams. Create schedule for all house/travel division team practices Notify division directors to be at House evaluations and drafts. Hockey on Third parade near the end of September. Notify all coaches and assistants to register with USA Hockey, have valid background checks and safe sport training. Prepare concessions, publish schedule to MqtHockey.org. Late September - open concession stand. Last week in September House league evaluations. Division directors need to be present. October House league and learn to skate programs officially begin. Referee clinics are held during the beginning of October. Verify scheduling for Coaching Clinics. First week in October Learn to Skate starts. Early October House league team drafts division directors need to be present. Early October schedule a coaches meeting with MAHA rep and MJH Coaching Committee Mid October MAHA District 8 Fall Meeting @ Wawonowin.
Mid October Cup League Scheduling at Lakeview Late October -Vangos Pizza fundraiser. Notify teams to provide baskets. Intent to enter the district tournament due to MAHA by November 1. End of October- 16U/18U split season ends. November After High School tryouts, preparations for 18U/16U house teams begin. Early November, solicit coaches for 18U/16U house teams. Exception request for State Playoffs are due to the District Chairperson by November 15. Coaching Clinics are generally in November. Prepare for 18U/16U drafts and schedules. Verify registrations for Holiday tournament. Notify house teams to provide baskets to auction at the Holiday Tournament. December MJH hosts the Holiday tournament for 14U, 12U and 10U B teams. Mid December Holiday Tournament. Coaching clinics need to be complete by 12/31. January The road to the state playoffs for house league teams begin in January ADD a donor page to the Yearbook. First week of January House league mid-season playoffs. Organize order and design for player T-Shirts. Distribute official rosters to all teams. Team Credentials check is usually the first weekend in January. Treasurer to send out statement to the board from the Mqt Community Foundation Before 1/20 post notice of elections for February Board meeting. Mid-January District 8 House league Play-downs. Remind coaches to turn in coaching reimbursements. House League District Playoffs. Schedule house league end of year playoffs if applicable. Notify mite teams to provide baskets for Betty Beckman tournament. Solicit nominees for major awards. Verify registration for Betty Beckman tournament
February The road to state playoffs for travel teams begin in February Reach out to Major Award donors and see if they can attend the banquet to give out their trophies. Election of new board members to serve 3yr term. First weekend in February travel team district playoffs. Reminder for soliciting nominees for major awards Last weekend in February Betty Beckman Mite Tournament March State playoffs are held in March State Playoffs for all teams. Send out member survey March 15 th, all coaching reimbursements are due for clinics, modules, etc. End of year playoffs for house league if budget allows Schedule end of year awards banquet.
