WITH SO MUCH happening at the Gold Coast Turf Club over the next few months, our Chairman Brett Cook and CEO Steve Lines would like to provide these exciting updates to our valued members while also taking the opportunity to provide clarity around recent inaccurate media reporting. Planning is well underway for our most ambitious new projects in recent years and its important to us that our members learn these announcements first. MAGIC MILLIONS SECURED AS MAJOR TOURISM DRAWCARD A NEW ERA of Magic Millions under the leadership of home-grown bloodstock expert Barry Bowditch has been a great success, buoyed by the news of our extended five year deal to host Australia s first richest race day. Praise must go to outgoing CEO Vin Cox for his outstanding workload and professionalism while successfully steering the event in the right direction all these years. While Vin will be sadly missed, it opens up new opportunities and I m sure under the leadership of Barry we will see some exciting new elements emerge. This powerhouse tourism drawcard last year delivered an economic boost of more than $12 million and almost 18,000 visitor nights to the Gold Coast. Gold Coast Turf Club is home to the world renowned $10 million Magic Millions Carnival, including the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, exclusively for Magic Millions graduates. Featuring nine races, the Magic Millions Racing Women s $500,000 Bonus and Fashions on the We are proud to say it s Australia s first richest race day with yearling sales producing champions on the track, including the mighty Winx. Field, the day has really cemented its reputation on the international racing scene as a must attend event. We are proud to say it s one of Australia s richest race days with yearling sales producing champions on the track, including the mighty mare Winx. There s an enormous responsibility to continue to invest and grow and we re confident that Barry and his team will continue to deliver, while attracting new international and domestic markets and audiences to this amazing part of the world. GOLD COAST TURF CLUB MEMBER UPDATE 1 FEBRUARY 2018

REJUVENATION ON TRACK FOR BORROW PIT REJUVENATION works on the council borrow pit have moved forward that will result in significant benefits for our industry while improving equine health. It follows a motion by the City of Gold Coast in 2016 to fill in a toxic waterway on Gold Market Drive which is now coming to fruition to enable Gold Coast Turf Club to create multi-use horse-training facilities and green space. Contrary to misleading media reports, the Gold Coast Turf Club has always been compliant with Local, State and Federal Government regulations and environmental considerations and the majority of the community agree that this toxic pit needs to be cleaned up. The land was originally owned freehold by the Gold Coast Turf Club and it was given to the City of Gold Coast at no cost to council or ratepayers. rich in nutrients). Of most significance is the lake s high ph, ammonia (nitrogen) and phosphorus. Ammonia and phosphorous are common components of animal waste such as urine and faeces, while nitrogen and phosphorus become pollutants when present in excessive quantities. The approvals given by the City of Gold Coast for the site to be excavated have always had the condition that the borrow pit must be filled back in as part of the process and the site rejuvenated. Another fact that is not commonly known is the land was originally owned freehold by the Gold Coast Turf Club and it was given to the City of Gold Coast at no cost to council or ratepayers. Despite inaccurate media reports, no native Australian wildlife will be euthanised during the project, but rather carefully relocated into the adjacent main canal. Gold Coast Turf Club will fold the pit into its long-term plan for the future of stabling racehorses locally as part of the overall Traintech and Equine Precinct. The end result will provide wide-ranging benefits to the industry with grassed areas for horses to exercise, a walking track area, additional parking for Magic Millions when required, and potentially a public amenity. It is fed by stormwater run-off from the surrounding 5.7ha catchment and properties that are used exclusively for equestrian purposes. Gold Coast Turf Club committed extensive time and research on flora and fauna studies and species management. We respect the expert environmental findings and also Council s decision to green-light excavation works to transform this swamp into green space, a facility for car park overflow a few times a year and horse-training amenities with picking areas for horses. Water sampling by City officers (Catchment Management Unit) and independent consultants have confirmed water in the lake remains highly eutrophic (detrimentally GOLD COAST TURF CLUB MEMBER UPDATE 2 FEBRUARY 2018

A WINNING PARTNERSHIP UBET AUDITORIUM FOLLOWING our recently signed sponsorship with Aquis, Gold Coast Turf Club is quickly becoming one of the most state-of-the-art, innovative race clubs in the country striving to offer guests an unparalleled service. We are excited to announce a planned multimillion dollar refurbishment of the downstairs betting area, bringing a luxurious and first-class technology blend set to usher in a new of level of comfort and convenience, thanks to an exciting new partnership with premier betting operator, UBET. The design overhaul will include a fullyenclosed airconditioned area and selfoperating betting terminals as well as new seating and tables to accommodate up to 3000 patrons. It will also include a rejuvenation of the bar and public areas and offer a high speed WiFi service to our members along with modern on-course bookmaker facilities. As the holder of the tote licence in the state, UBET and its predecessor TAB, have provided Queenslanders with wagering dollar services for more than 50 years. GREEN GRASS FOR THOROUGHBREDS The deal with Gold Coast Turf Club will also provide: GOLD COAST TURF CLUB is exploring opportunities for suitable space to allow horses to feed naturally to assist with health and wellbeing. As part of the daily management of thoroughbred racehorses, trainers walk horses daily to maintain muscle tone with horses grazing on fresh natural grasses. Currently there are limited grazing areas and it s important that continuous natural grasses are made available with a re-growth of the natural grasses. Thoroughbred race horses housed in stables and trained for racing are fed with natural and manufactured products from a bucket or feed bin. To ensure horses are given the opportunity to graze naturally, trainers would walk horses to graze daily. Similar to strip grazing for milking cows, Gold Coast Turf Club would need to develop portions of land that can be rotated for grazing and then allowing areas to recover. Recovery of grasses will be season dependant, however on average would require a minimum four weeks to regrow. Trakgood Consulting Services is providing the Gold Coast Turf Club with a report to identify available vacant land suitable for the project. The report will look at the area of land required for grazing, which would require around two hectares to sufficiently provide natural grasses for grazing on an annual basis. This land will also accommodate future growth in the Traintech and Equine Precinct Plan. a new bookmaker station and Auditorium UBET defaulted WiFi, UBET Promotions online Member sign up by the Club Incentives and Commissions Set up of True Online facility Showpiece on course for UBET Renovations will commence 12th February with works forecasted to be complete before Gold Coast Cup in May 2018. There will be some minor interruptions during renovations however we will try to minimise these. GOLD COAST TURF CLUB MEMBER UPDATE 3 FEBRUARY 2018

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB MEMBER UPDATE 6 FEBRUARY 2018

TRAINTEK FUTURE-PROOFING OUR INDUSTRY RACING STABLES are vital to the industry and the Traintech facility is a key component in ensuring growth and future-proofing our sport. An integral part of the Gold Coast Turf Club s masterplan is this exciting $4 million redevelopment will significantly expand training and stable facilities, accommodating almost triple the number of horses and sustaining racing viability long-term on the Gold Coast. We have a responsibility to protect the racing industry and with private stabling facing new threats by developers buying land and stables from local trainers, this facility has become increasingly important to our growth strategy to harness opportunities and future-protect the industry. Our proposed three-year upgrade will increase stable space from 130 to 280 horses and vastly improve the walkers, sand rolls, equine pool and walking tracks. The vision is that Trainers will have access to food, vet, farrier, shavings and waste management as part of their racing fees. First year works will see the building of a birdproof stable complex, high pressure cleaning equipment for the internal area of the stable complex, the replacement of selected roof sheeting to improve lighting and a covered area allowing for drainage, water and electrical. Used on-course stable boxes will also be installed, sand rolls will be redeveloped and the existing sand track will be removed. Year 2 of the project will reinstate the existing equine pool, construct a waste area and sawdust storage zone, install an additional 100 on-course boxes as per design, and see the installation of new walkers plus instalment of four sand rolls and repairs and maintenance on existing boxes. Year 3 will commence works to construct feed storage areas and farrier and vet rooms. With the current Traintech lease set to expire in 2027, Gold Coast Turf Club is seeking a 50-year lease with option to purchase. Buoyed by recent operating improvements Gold Coast Turf Club is attracting interest from other big players on the back of the proposed development and infrastructure plans. In another coup for the club, Training icon Chris Waller recently opened stables here. Plans are currently with Council for a partnership that would deliver longterm sustainability, create employment and have a positive economic impact for the city. This facility has become increasingly important to our growth strategy to harness opportunities and futureprotect the industry GOLD COAST TURF CLUB MEMBER UPDATE 7 FEBRUARY 2018

NIGHT RACING STILL IN THE BARRIERS THERE HAS been plenty of discussion whether or not night racing will become a reality and while the concept has plenty of positives, a number of considerations must first be explored and debated. Just like the Australian Turf Club with its night racing at Canterbury, the Coast would be an ideal location for this exciting format, but first we must ensure the infrastructure is in place to support it. This would require more than just the installation of lights. As a new betting revenue opportunity that funds prize money, it must be done sensibly and as part of the overall infrastructure upgrades to the training facilities that our local trainers have been waiting so patiently for. The other obvious consideration is race programming and the impact that could potentially have on our corporate supporters and club revenue. Any potential impacts on local jockeys must also be thoroughly examined. Watch this space as we shed some more light on this in coming months. While the concept has plenty of positives, a number of considerations must first be explored and debated. GOLD COAST TURF CLUB MEMBER UPDATE 8 FEBRUARY 2018
