omen s s Soccer Season Outlook Samford Soccer enters its fifth year of existence with a daunting task before them. Building off a 2000 season which saw the Bulldogs post an 8-8-1 record and saw a number of records fall in their wake they will face their toughest schedule ever in 2001. The Bulldogs will face this task behind the leadership of All-TAAC Freshman team member Hayley Kolb (Gunter, Texas) and the record holder in every goalkeeper statistic in the Samford record book Carrie Ollom (Medina, Ohio). Last season Kolb rewrote the scoring record books for the Bulldogs with nine goals, three game winning goals and a streak of netting a goal in four consecutive games in just her freshman campaign. Kolb finished the 2000 season seventh in the TAAC in goals scored and tenth in the TAAC for total points. Ollom also had a banner year in net for the Bulldogs. She claimed the third best goals against average in the TAAC at 1.54 and posted three shutouts. Ollom was also the only Bulldog in 2000 to play every single minute of every game. The 2001 season is geared to challenge the Bulldogs to assume a contender's role for the TAAC Tournament. With the addition of the strongest recruiting class in the history of the program to the dedicated returning corps the Bulldogs appear to be ready not only to accept the challenge, but also to conquer it! DEFENSE An old coaching adage says, "Defense is the key to winning championships". If there is truth to that saying then the combined goals against average of the Bulldog defense last season was a great indicator of the fact that the Samford defense is poised to help the team achieve their goals. The anchor of the Samford defense in 2001 will be junior Sara Litteken (Wichita Falls, Texas). Last season Litteken excelled in a new defensive scheme that gave her more responsibility and more freedom. After a productive spring season her understanding of the position has her primed to spearhead the Bulldog back line. Junior Kellie Carmichael (Dallas, Georgia) and Sophomore Wendy Woods (Birmingham, Alabama) are two returning players who are shifting to defense from other positions will join Litteken in the back this year. Both players showed very well in the back this spring and will be vying for a starting spot this fall. Joining these returnees on defense this season will be a pair of outstanding freshman. Lisa Stucki (Evansville, Indiana) and Kathy Nichols (Grapevine, Texas) are both expected to compete right away for a spot in the Bulldog defense. Stucki, an Indiana ODP participant, brings the Bulldogs a great deal of athleticism and savvy. Nichols, a North Texas ODP participant, brings the Bulldogs a physical presence and strength in the air. Coaches believe the combination of the returnees and the freshman should make the Bulldog defense a formidable corps in 2001. MIDFIELD Sophomore Kelly Christoffer (Grapevine, Texas) will lead the midfield for the Bulldogs in 2001. Christoffer was second only to Ollom in minutes played last season. She is a powerful player who quickly established her presence in the middle last year with a goal against Southwest Texas in just the second game of the season. She will be joined in the midfield by sophomore Jessica D'Amico (Birmingham, Alabama), junior Graham Holt (Nashville, Tennessee) and senior Christa Jones (Knoxville, Tennessee). D'Amico started as a freshman last season in the first game of the year against Mississippi State. However, injury ended her season as quickly as it began. She is a crafty player who coaches believe brings a great deal to the team. Holt, who split time last season between midfield and defense, adds the ability to take players on from the flank. Jones also adds to the attacking dimension of the team with great speed on the flank. That speed and attacking presence will be counted on this year if the Bulldogs are to conquer their demanding schedule. The midfield this season will have a nice mixture of young players with the returning veterans. Coaches have great expectations that Keala Ryan (Brier, Washington) and Heidi Kearns (Lakeland, Florida) will quickly establish themselves in the center of the midfield for the Bulldogs. Due to her speed and strength in the tackle, Ryan, will be looking to fill a more defensive or holding position. Kearns has the ability to bring the Bulldog attack to lifewith her distribution and is a workhorse who is expected to play in behind the strikers. Adding fuel to the competitive fire in the midfield will be freshmen Jessie Dassel (Evansville, Indiana), Adri Zertuche (Houston, Texas), and Lindsey Bosshardy (Leesburg, Florida). Each is expected to battle for time in the midfield this year and coaches feel confident that their addition will give the Bulldogs depth that they have not had in past years. FORWARDS The onus for ultimate success will fall on the players expected to put the ball in the net for the Bulldogs. All-Freshman TAAC performer Hayley Kolb (Gunter, Texas) will lead the attack. Kolb stormed on the scene scoring nine goals and adding two assists in her first season. Returning along with Kolb are three sophomores; Lisa Robishaw (Ft. Walton Beach, Florida), Susan Polhemus (Helena, Alabama), and Anna Braun (Leesburg, Florida). Robishaw came on strong at the end of the 2000 season to finish with a pair of goals and one assist. Combining her speed with a productive spring, Robishaw will be fighting for a spot up front in 2001. Polhemus and Braun each bring a year of collegiate soccer experience to the Bulldog attack and have the potential to contribute throughout the season. The Bulldog offense in 2001 will be bolstered with the addition of a prolific attacking trio. Christina Dortch (Birmingham, Alabama), Heather Pomper (Brier, Washington) and Lindsay Shanks (Evansville, Indiana) have all excelled in attacking roles for their high school, club, and ODP programs. Dortch and Shanks bring the Bulldog attack tremendous speed and each has a knack for scoring goals. Pomper uses versatility, power, and strenght to her advantage and could prove to be a presence this year as a forward or as an attacking midfielder. GOALKEEPING The Samford net will once again be the capable hands of Ollom. She has anchored the back line for the past three seasons and owns every one of Samford s goalkeeping records. Ollom is a vocal leader and a topnotch keeper. She will carry a great deal of pressure to keep a young Bulldog squad on task. She has started every game in goal the past two seasons. This year she will be challenged by a pair of outstanding freshmen. Cassie Coggins (Fayetteville, Georgia) and Crystal Royall (Richmond, Virginia) come into the 2001 season hungry to take over in net for the Bulldogs. Coggons is a tremendous shot stopper and is technically sound. Royall has the greatest range of the Bulldog keepers. For the first time since the program began in 1997, Samford will have three goalkeepers on its roster and coaches are looking for the competition to raise each players game. SCHEDULE The 2001 schedule will be the most challenging in the five years of the Samford program. The challenge will begin even before they begin keeping score as Samford will travel to Brazil for five matches in eight days against local club and university teams in Sau Paulo. One week after returning from Brazil, the Bulldogs will open the season on the road on Aug. 31, against No. 12 ranked Texas A&M. Texas A&M is one of four teams on the Bulldog schedule who participated in the 2000 NCAA Championships. Wright State, Jacksonville, and Tennessee Tech all one their respective conferneces last season. Samford will host SEC-foe Mississippi State on Sept. 18. The home schedule will begin on Sept. 4, against the University of Montevallo. The rest of the home schedule includes Lipscomb University, Mercer, Troy State, Florida Atlantic, UCF, and new TAAC-foe Belmont University.
