The Nike SB Tre A.D. review One of main goals of Nike is to keep progressing and using most advanced technologies in ir footwear. The Nike Skateboarding Division is no exception. Right after launch of SB line, Ecue (1.) was developed and released. Its futuristic design and debut of a molded plastic upper with a hole pattern to achieve highest durability a skate shoe ever had where milestones in skateboarding footwear that didn't get recognition y deserved. In 2006, next attempt to design a skate shoe that is durable, breathable and offers great board feel was released, original Tre (2.). It featured 3-D structured toe cap and had better board feeling than Ecue, but it was still kind of bulky and featured a, let's say, different design to most or shoes on market at that time. In 2008, when every or company was throwing anor vulcanised model on market, Nike is brave enough to keep pushing limits and has released Tre A.D. (3.). This updated version of original Tre proves that combination of durability and board feel in a slim shape is definitely possible in 2008. If you decide to get a pair of Tre A.D.s, you should pick same size as you normally would in Dunk Lows. Please don't size down like you should with Blazers and Harbors. The toe cap doesn't stretch at all because of molded plastic and heel isn't thickly stuffed, so overall length of shoe will stay same even after y are broken in. The break-in process takes longer compared to normal suede models, for example. Although sole uses Nikes "free technology", you should try to wear m as much as possible before you start skating m. I would recommend at least five hours of pure walking, this way you can be sure that sole of shoe is soft enough. If you don't have time or want to skate m

right out of box, bend sole a few times in all directions that flex grooves allow, orwise you will be disappointed during first few hours because sole is still stiff. The plastic material of toe box needs break-in time as well. The first four hours of skating, when surface of 3-D structure is still very small, flick is very bad, especially when you are used to vulcanised shoes. It will definitely take a few hours to get used to A.D. and flick gets much better. Durability The laces are always weakest spot of most skate shoes. If re's not some kind of lace protection, laces trough after normally rip a few sessions. During design process of Tre A.D., Nike tried to put some thoughts and technology into laces and came up with idea of adding a string of kevlar, a material that is normally used in bulletproof vests, to middle of laces. Unfortunately, kevlar laces don't last much longer than normal ones. During testing process, laces ripped through several times and kevlar string didn't seem to be a barrier. The fact that redone laces aren't more durable is a huge disappointment since every skater is waiting desperately for "never ripping laces". Hopefully Nike SB will keep working and progressing on this task in future. The toe cap of Tre A.D. is same as old Tre. It proved that it worked well and fulfils its four main goals: to be lightweight, durable, breathable and grippy. The main difference between old and new toe cap is shape. The new Tre A.D. design features a smaller version,

especially on inside where no extraordinary durability is needed for skateboarding, surface that has molded plastic material has been reduced. The big ventilation holes in forefoot area that get smaller towards heel seem to be a weak spot in design. Although y play an important role for ventilation and breathability of shoe, durability in this region suffers a lot because of m. The holes reduce area of material and every one is a point of attack on surface. The bigger it is, faster it is going to wear out, especially if you do a lot of tricks that stress this area, like heelflips. A simple solution would be to make holes smaller in front and bigger towards heel, this way breathability would stay around same, forefoot would gain durability because of more material and closed smooth surface wouldn't have so many points of attack. The stitched swoosh on heel doesn't affect performance and durability of Tre A.D., but it's still something that Nike should have put more thought into. The problem with it is that after only a few sessions it is completely destroyed by griptape, even if you don't do many heelflips. It just looks untidy and worn out. Nike should have a bigger interest in having long-lasting branding on ir shoe. The design of Tre A.D., with its high sidewalls, makes sure that sensitive mesh tongue is well protected and tight inner lining, which is connected to tongue on its whole length, keeps it low and close to foot. This area is constructed way better than most of or Nike SB models. The mesh tongue of Dunk Low, for example, is fringy after just a few hours of skating, whereas A.D. one looks still new after several sessions. One of best innovations that has a major effect on durability is hidden stitching on outside of shoe. Because of this technique, blown-out stitching is nothing to worry about. The single panels of shoe stay attached to each or and make sure support, stability and durability stay as new for a long time.

The durability of sole has its roots in two main features. First, deep herringbone flex pattern grooves, and dot pattern make sure that, although it is very soft rubber that makes sole grippy, it takes a long time to be worn down. Second, re is a different type of rubber used on regions of sole where more durability is needed because of heavier abrasion. The sickle-shaped rubber piece at heel, with letters DRC engraved in it, has been made from a different material than rest of sole. DRC stands for Dynamic Rubber Compound. It is a special formula of rubber that produces a higher abrasion resistance without sacrificing traction. It was put on heel of Zoom Tre A.D. for heel stops while skating, this way you won't wear down heel of outsole so quickly. The construction of midsole also supports overall durability of shoe. In back part, heavy rubber has been replaced by foam, which saves weight. In front part, an extra layer of rubber has been added where biggest abrasion can be expected. In some way this is similar to Nike SB Blazer construction, where also anor layer of rubber has been added in forefoot area. The Tre A.D. design uses this old method to add durability, but takes it to next level by having flex grooves on this extra layer as well, so flexibility of forefoot stays almost same. According to Nike, this sidewall bumper is also made out of a softer rubber than rest of midsole so it has better grip and flick. The Tre A.D. comes with two lacing options. The first five holes can be hidden under upper material, but not with nylon lace loops that or brands offer. Under upper layer is anor layer with holes, a pretty unique system in skate shoe market, so problem of nylon lace loops ripping won't

appear. It's kind of hard to lace m since tongue is sewed to inner material at sides, so it can't be pushed down too much, but it's well worth effort because your laces will be protected very well. Unfortunately last two holes at top don't have an alternative lacing option, so y will stay unprotected and will probably rip trough first since this is only weak spot lace protection of this shoe has. All in all shoe offers great durability. The only real disappointment durability-wise is that kevlar laces don't work. Apart from that, materials and construction of shoe are made to last. The big ventilation holes might have been better at back of shoe, but since my pair didn't rip trough at this spot, y obviously don't affect durability too much. I counted hours I've been skating in Tre A.D. for this review. The one in pictures has been skated for 52 hours. They don't even have a complete hole in upper, outsole or toe cap. To compare: The Nike SB Harbors I skated before had a complete hole in forefoot after a bit more than 17 hours, so you can approximately say that Tre A.D. is three times more durable than a basic vulcanised model, like Harbor. If you keep or factors aside and just focus on durability, higher price of A.D. compared with or shoes is legitimate and worth investment. Cushion The cushion of Tre A.D. is basically same as any or Nike SB shoe. It comes with a 5mm zoom air bag, which is still a good cushion. However, compared with original Tre's 10mm air bag in heel and a 5mm in front foot area, it's a step backwards. In my opinion, this decision was made to improve board feeling of shoe. The thinner sole better board feeling, but at same time cushioning gets worse - that's general rule. The concept of Tre A.D. seems to attach more importance to board feeling by reducing cushioning compared with its forerunner, but it still has enough to skate gaps. You always have to keep in mind that, se days, people jump down stairs and rails in way thinner vulcanised shoes with less cushioning, so A.D. is still ahead.

Breathability Although graphic on Nike SB fact sheet for Tre A.D shows three different materials, tongue of shoe consists of just two. Rough structured mesh layers eir side of a piece of open-cell foam allow a lot more air and moisture to leave inside of shoe than comparable stuffed tongues, like that of a Dunk Low. The injected toe box of Tre A.D. is one of main reasons of good breathability. You'll notice difference when you switch from a conventional skate shoe: faster you skate more you'll feel air flow in toe region. The toe box consists of two layers. The plastic cap, with characteristic hole pattern that is injected on a net fabric and a breathable inner lining. This combination of just two layers in front, which are both breathable, allows already-mentioned air flow. If you cut off toe box and put it in front of a lamp you can even see light coming through every single hole. The side panel with ventilation holes, combined with inner sock under it support breathability of shoe as well. Because of thin construction of this area with many holes in lear layer on outside, air is able to interchange through inner lining to a certain degree. It might not be best idea from a durability point to put huge holes in side of a skate shoe, but from a breathability point it definitely makes sense and works. The overall breathability of Tre A.D is very good compared with or models. Where ors still have tongues made out of suede, lear or just a layer of mesh on top, Nike uses possibly most advanced technology y can offer for this shoe. Almost every part of shoe is made with goal of good breathability in

mind, wher it is toe box, side panels or tongue. The only part that is not breathable is heel, all or areas feature a technique that allows air flow. And this construction doesn't only sound nice in ory, it proved itself while skating. You'll notice difference on a hot summer day after a long session, "cooking feet" feeling isn't a problem anymore, or at least it doesn't appear as fast as when you skate different models. The great solutions shoe is equipped with when it comes to breathability make it a leader in this area, hopefully or brands will follow this example.
