GEORGE MITTERWALD 234 LAST GAME: Dusty Coleman sent the Ports home with a game winning RBI double in the tenth and the Nuts came out on the losing end of a pitchers duel again on Friday night in Stockton. Coleman drove in Michael Gilmartin from first with his double off Kaimi Mead in the final inning to give the Ports the 2-1 victory. Mead (0-1) pitched a scoreless ninth and had retired one batter in the tenth before allowing a single to Gilmartin. Modesto s offense struggled to get anything going against Ports starter Gary Daley Jr. Daley kept the Nuts (4-5) to just one run and four hits over his five inning Cal. League debut. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Daley left after the fifth and Ryan Doolittle took over out of the bullpen. Doolittle (2-0) was nearly perfect again in his second appearance versus Modesto. He kept the Nuts to just three hits and struck out seven over the final five innings. OPP. HRs: Modesto allowed its first home run of the 2011 season on 4/13. It was a two run shot to left from Bakersfield's Eric Campbell at John Thurman Field. The Nuts currently lead the league with just one home run allowed this season. The 2010 Nuts lasted all of April and into May without allowing a home run at home. They gave up just five home runs in April 2010, but each one of the five was hit away from JTF. Kenny Durst was the first Modesto pitcher to allow a home run at home last season. He gave up a solo shot to Rancho Cucamonga s Alberto Castillo on May 4. WALK THIS WAY: Delta Cleary Jr. leads Modesto batters with five walks this season. The Nuts have walked a league low 13 times over the first seven games of the season. The Stockton Ports lead the league in base on balls with 55, Lake Elsinore and Lancaster is second with 45. THE D: The Nuts currently lead the Cal. League in Fielding Percentage and Caught Stealing/Stolen Base Against Efficiency. Modesto has been charged with a league low four errors and have a league high.988 fielding percentage through this season. Modesto catchers have allowed four stolen bases this season and have caught six. Modesto s.600 Caught Stealing/Stolen Base Efficiency percentage is the best in the Cal. League. HRs IN BUNCHES: Mike Zuanich launched his league best fourth home run in the seventh inning of Wednesday s loss to Bakersfield. Hit his third home run on Sunday, his second on Saturday night and his first on opening night. The last Modesto player with four home runs in a home stand was Thomas Field in 2010 (5/31-6/6). Tim Wheeler launched his first home run on opening night last season, and like Zuanich, also had a home run in game three of last season. Wheeler finished April 2010 with two home runs. Brian Rike led the team with three home runs in April 2010. Thomas Field and David Christensen added one apiece and the Nuts finished last April with seven home runs. ROSTER UPDATE: INF Maikol Gonzalez was added to the Modesto roster on 4/15. Gonzalez takes the place left open when SS Josh Rutledge was placed on the disabled list with a right groin strain The Rockies assigned RHP Dan Perkins to Sacramento from Modesto on 4/13. 2011 NUTS AT-A-GLANCE: Chad Bettis, Nick Scnaitmann, Tyler Matzek, Parker Frazier and Dan Houston make up Modesto s starting rotation in 2011. Matzek is listed by Baseball America as Colorado s top overall prospect; while Bettis is ranked 9 th. Frazier (24 th ) is also on the Top-30 Rockies Prospect list. Schnaitmann was 8-10 with a 5.32 ERA over 25 games and 24 starts last season with Asheville. Houston spent all of 2010 in Modesto, but finished the season on the disabled list with a back injury. Sheng-An Kuo will be Modesto closer in 2011. The rest of the Nuts bullpen features Alan DeRatt, Leuris Gomez, Mike Marbry, Kaimi Mead, Chad Rose and Coty Woods. DeRatt and Marbry both played in Modesto last year. DeRatt came to Modesto midway through 2010. Marbry suffered an arm injury during the final week of the first half and did not pitch again last season. Gomez, Rose and Woods all spent 2010 in Asheville. Mead pitched for Maui in the Golden Baseball League last season. 2010 Tourists Dallas Tarleton and Jose Gonzalez will handle the catching responsibilities in 2011 for Modesto. The Nuts outfield will be deep with talent this season. It features newcomers Delta Cleary Jr., Kent Matthes, Eliezer Mesa and Orlando Sandoval as well as returnee Scott Robinson. Cleary and Robinson combined for almost 80 steals when they played together in Asheville in 2009. Cleary was ranked as the 18 th -best prospect in the Colorado system after 2009. Mesa is coming off an All-Star 2010 season in Asheville where he batted.302 with 146 hits over 117 games. The Modesto infield features top prospect Nolan Arenado at third, middle infielders Josh Rutledge, Carlos Martinez and Angelys Nina as well as Mike Zuanich at first. Arenado, Martinez, and Nina all come to Modesto from Asheville. Rutledge made his pro debut in Tri-City last year and skips over Asheville to join the Nuts this season. Zuanich split time in both Asheville and Modesto last season. BA TOP 30: The 2011 Nuts feature several of not only Colorado s top prospects, but also some of the best talent Minor League Baseball has to offer. Left-handed starter Tyler Matzek is listed as Colorado s top overall prospect by Baseball America, and is listed on several of the overall MLB Top-50 Prospect lists. Third baseman Nolan Arenado is ranked 3 rd on the Top-30 Rockies list by BA. Right-hander Chad Bettis is 9 th and right-handed starter Parker Frazier is 24 th. Matzek was selected by Colorado in the first round of the 2009 draft and made his professional debut in Asheville last season. Arenado is ranked 3 rd between 2009 Modesto catcher Wilin Rosario (2) and ahead of former Nuts starter Christian Friedrich (4). Bettis is a newcomer to the list. He was drafted by the Rockies in the second round of the 2010 June draft out of Texas Tech. Frazier comes in at #24 in 2011. He was ranked as the 21 st -best prospect in the Colorado system before the 2010 season. Matzek was also listed as the top overall prospect before the 2010 season; Arenado was number 10. Overall Colorado s farm system is ranked as the 10 th -best in MLB. The Rockies system was also ranked 10 th by Baseball America in 2010, 20 th in 2009, 7 th in 2008, 2 nd in 2007 and 11 th in 2006. Dan Houston makes his second 2011 start tonight for Modesto. Houston was sharp in his 2011 debut. He gave up just two runs and four hits over seven full innings and won for the second time during his season opening outing. He also won his Cal. League debut in Rancho Cucamonga while with Modesto last season. The right-hander spent all of 2010 with the Nuts, but missed the final month of the season due to injury. He suffered a back injury during a home start versus High Desert on 8/3/10 and did not pitch again last season. The Nuts placed him on the disabled list on 8/10/10. Houston matched a season high with 11 hits allowed and gave up seven runs over five innings in his last start for Modesto. He began the 2010 season by going 2-1 with a 4.12 ERA in April and was 4-4 with a 5.43 ERA before the All-Star break last season. Houston was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA and a.269 opponent s average over the three starts before the injury. 2010: Houston earned a victory in his California League debut after allowing two runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings in Rancho Cucamonga on 4/12. He struck out four and did not allow a walk in the win... Houston started the 2010 season 2-0, and earned his second straight win after holding Inland Empire to a run and six hits through six innings. He TODAY S PITCHING MATCH UP MODESTO NUTS TOTALS cruised through the 66ers lineup and did not give up a run until the fourth... Houston allowed six runs, and five earned, to Stockton during his first home start on 4/29. He walked five and struck out one during the 3 2/3 innings start... Houston followed a rehab start by Taylor Buchholz, and pitched out of the bullpen for the first time in his pro career on May 5 vs. Rancho Cucamonga. He allowed two runs in the second of that game, and six runs in the third. Houston allowed 10 hits, nine earned runs, walked four and struck out three in the relief appearance Houston lost for the third straight game on 5/11 versus Stockton at Banner Island Ballpark. He gave up seven hits and three earned runs over the 5 1/3 innings start. He also walked one, hit a batter with a pitch, and struck out three 5/17: Houston retired the first nine batters he faced, but gave up a single to Dan Kaczrowski at the start of the fourth inning.
